My President is a feminist II – President Obama addresses Planned Parenthood supporters.

“Let’s be clear here: Women are not an interest group…. They’re half of this country.”

“If you truly values families, you shouldn’t play politics with a woman’s health.”

Word.

(Do you think the President saw my tweet?)

My Uterus is Mine — NOT YOURS.

This is circulating on the Facespace and I love it so hard, I want to take it out back and get it pregnant — and then let it decide whether or not to keep the baby.

Okay, that got away from me a little, but STILL:

You’re welcome.

Helping anti-choice terrorists, one name at a time.

Last week, I got all caught up in my anti-War on Women fury and tweeted an article that, it transpired, was three years old. Oopsie!

In my defense, though, it was about a law in Oklahoma that was really, really heinous and had actually passed, so my brain was a bit addled. This law (later struck down by the courts) would have required that the details of every abortion conducted in the state be posted on a public website:

The questionnaire doesn’t include the woman’s name or “any information specifically identifying the patient,” but it does ask for age, race, level of education, marital status, number of previous pregnancies, and the county in which the abortion was performed, information which opponents of the bill argue would be enough to identify a woman in a small town. The questionnaire also asks about the mother’s reason for the abortion, her method of payment, and even what type of insurance she has, as well as whether the fetus received anaesthetic and whether there was “an infant born alive as a result of the abortion.”

So, you know – phew! At least we dodged that one!

Except we didn’t.

Dear GOP: You do know how pregnancy works, right?

I have been pregnant four times.

These pregnancies led to the following four results, in this order: abortion, baby, miscarriage, baby.

These pregnancies occurred over a span of many years, across two continents, and in three different homes. There were at least seven different health care professionals involved, my hair styles varied widely, as did my levels of nausea. The only constant, in all four cases, other than me, was the presence of a penis.

It happened to be the penis I eventually married, but regardless, that is how pregnancy works. No matter who you are, no matter your sexuality, ability to reproduce, or family make-up, if there are children in your life, at some point along the way, there was a penis involved.

I mention this only because it seems the GOP may have forgotten.

The GOP War On Women Rolls On…

…Next stop, Wilmington, North Carolina.

It seems that my home state has once again decided to lead the way in stupidity against 51% of the American population, as the New Hanover County Commission has decided that women shouldn’t be having sex and expecting the county to do anything about it other than broaden the tax base, one bundle of joy at a time.

The county’s health department was awarded $8,899 in family planning funds that would “provide medical services related to family planning including physician’s consultation, examination, prescription, continuing supervision, laboratory examination and contraceptive supplies,” according to a budget amendment item included in documents for Monday’s commissioners meeting. The county was not required to match the state grant.

Chairman Ted Davis said he thought it was a sad day when “taxpayers are asked to pay money for contraceptives” for women having sex without planning responsibly.

If these young women are being responsible and didn’t have the sex to begin with, we wouldn’t have this problem to begin with,” Davis said. Continue reading

A day in the life of the GOP. And American women.

Over on TPM, Evan McMorris-Santoro sums up the day on which the GOP decided it was time to time-travel back at least sixty years, and drag us all along with them for the trip.

Today. That day was today:

There you have it: modern women being told by Republicans that they’re not qualified to talk about their own sexual health, are dressed like “whores” and probably need birth control because they’re so slutty. And this is just in one day.

For details, click here. But hold on tight, because that time machine moves fast.

And here you were worrying that I was being overly optimistic in my earlier postTch.

Women are humans – Chapter 12,807

An image from the Reddit thread in question.

There’s a tendency among some egalitarian minded folks to blame the state of women — around the globe and in their own backyard — on religion.

It’s my opinion, however, that “religion,” as a discreet entity, doesn’t exist. Religions (as opposed to faith, and/or the existence of the Divine) are human social constructs, and thus cannot help but reflect the human societies they serve. In fact, it’s my opinion that the frequency with which religions serve as a vehicle through which we reveal our worst proclivities isn’t the impressive thing — the impressive thing is how frequently religion has inspired us to reach beyond our worst proclivities for our better angels.

And just as you don’t need religion to be a good person, you don’t need religion to be an asshole.

Witness the experience of a 15 year old young lady attempting to participate in an atheist group (or “subreddit”) on Reddit. She posted a thread named “What my super religious mother gave me for Christmas,” featuring a picture of herself holding a copy of Carl Sagan’s The Demon Haunted World – I discovered her story on Skepchick last night, and my hair still hasn’t come back down from where it got stood on end.

As writer and Ms. Skepchik herself Rebecca Watson says in the post:

What a cool thing to happen! A touching tale of religious tolerance. I’m sure the comments will be appropriately celebratory and, seeing as she’s 15, nonsexual. LOL.

Because yes. That is not, to put it mildly, what happened.

A snapshot of despair: One week in Israel/Palestine

Mississippi Personhood: A Bill in Which the Supposed Personhood of a Fetus Trumps the Personhood of an ACTUAL PERSON

Mississippi’s Personhood Bill is crap for all women, including pregnant women.

Tomorrow, the state of Mississippi will be voting on whether life begins at the moment of conception or not under the guise of something called “personhood”.  The amendment reads as such:

Section 33.  Person defined.  As used in this Article III of the state constitution, the term ‘person’ or ‘persons’  shall include every human being from the moment of fertilization, cloning or the functional equivalent thereof.

The personhood movement, as it were, started in Colorado, and an amendment was placed before the voting public for the 2010 elections.  That amendment was roundly defeated by a 2 -to – 1 margin (yay, Colorado), but Mississippi is a far cry from Colorado, and if this initiative passes in Mississippi, it will change the whole abortion debate both locally and nationally.

Let me say upfront, this definition of personhood is fucked-up.  For all the fancy wording about loving the fetus, blah, blah, blah, it’s about control of a woman’s body.  I have written about abortion before, and I make no apologies for the fact that I am hardcore pro-choice.  Abortions should be readily available and safe.  It is  a legal procedure, damn it, and if we’re not going to agonize over the morality of our tax dollars going to kill brown people in the Middle East, then we damn well better not be arguing over the morality of using our taxes for abortions – which we don’t in the first damn place! (Click for more on the stupidness of the concept of personhood)
