Cain Still Unable: Cain Accused of Sexual Harassment

The best part is all the references to how “lucky” Mitt Romney has been in the scandal department.

And the Cain Train just derailed all over the Monday morning headlines as claims of sexual harassment are coming forward from Cain’s days as head of the National Restaurant Association lobbyist outfit in the 90′s.

Politico reports “at least two” women working at the NRA when Cain ran it “complained to colleagues and senior association officials about inappropriate behavior” by the man who is now the national frontrunner for the Republican presidential nomination.

More:

The women complained of sexually suggestive behavior by Cain that made them angry and uncomfortable, the sources said, and they signed agreements with the restaurant group that gave them financial payouts to leave the association. The agreements also included language that bars the women from talking about their departures.

Details on the incidents described in Politico include “conversations allegedly filled with innuendo or personal questions of a sexually suggestive nature” and “descriptions of physical gestures that were not overtly sexual but that made women who experienced or witnessed them uncomfortable and that they regarded as improper in a professional relationship.”

The GOP’s War On Women Continues

lilith.org

The Protect Life Act was just another battle in the GOP war on women. Angry Black Lady and asiangrrlMN have already shared their thoughts and covered it very well. They very eloquently and thoroughly expressed the rage I and thousands of other women feel while having our options controlled by people who don’t give a damn about us.

However, don’t forget that this is just one of many battles. As 2012 comes nearer, it’s time to refresh our memories about some of the other ways women are punished just for being women. Palin and Bachmann are puppets meant to show how open-minded the GOP is. While the political Barbies flutter their eyelashes, spout doctrine and say “gosh, by golly” the Republicans openly take rights from and withhold fairness from half the country.

Let’s start with the unanimous vote to restrict women from equal pay. Protect Life at the risk of the mother’s health? Sure. Paycheck Fairness Act? Oh hell no. Now, one has to ask what they had to gain from purposely blocking fair pay for women. Women weren’t asking for more pay, nothing extra whatsoever, just fair and equal treatment. What about that is so offensive that every single Republican voted to block it? Well, if you follow the link you will see that they feared it would be a burden on small businesses. That’s the best they could do.

The Price Of Beating A Woman In Topeka Kansas… Hell, It’s FREE

ThinkProgress.org

I’m from the Midwest, so I know how domestic violence works in the Bible Belt. The reality is, while the law says women should not be beaten, culturally allowed gender bias does turn a blind eye to the problem. In what I consider the information age, a time when bright trumps might, we still find ourselves facing domestic violence with a certain trepidation in this region. The central U.S. is about a decade behind the rest of the nation, both in recognizing and correcting the problem.

But decriminalizing domestic violence? You gotta be freaking kidding me. This isn’t a brand new problem, however. The gaps in help for abused women is so poor that the district attorney advises victims not to call in.  Another danger is that domestic violence situations will escalate to regain dominance of the situation. What is often mistaken as retaliation is actually an attempt to assume control over the victim. Not that it matters to the victim. For her, it’s just another beating.  She may have to pay for her medical bills, knowing the man who hurt her won’t have to pay a dime to her or for his crime.  Could it be that jaywalking or owning dangerous dogs will be a worse crime than beating an adult woman?

Florida Voter Suppression: Newly-Married Members of the Uterati Edition

Oh good grief

Across the country, voter suppression efforts are in full force.  There are the bevy of birther bills which Republicans in various states (Montana, Pennsylvania, Georgia, Arizona, Texas, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Indiana, Connecticut, Missouri and Iowa) hope will prevent the Kenyan Usurper’s name from even appearing on the ballot.

There are also bills that make it really fucking hard to register to vote in at least two dozen states. Florida’s voter suppression bill is particularly ludicrous.

Florida Republicans, as we all know, are a tad “squirmish” when it comes to their vaginaed citizens.  Surely, you recall that the Florida GOP determined that the word “uterus” was inappropriate for young ears.

Whelp, the Florida GOP has launched another attack on the Florida Uterati; this attack, HB 1355, is on the Uterati’s newly-married members — (the bill also disproportionately affects minorities, students, and bloggers, by the way).

Essentially, if you’re a newly-married woman and you don’t want to change your name, or don’t change your name “in time,” then you might consider getting your marriage and birth certificate tattooed on your newlywed ass:

Florida GOP: The word "uterus" is "inappropriate for children and other guests."

Hell hath no fury like a vagina scorned.

The GOP is scared of your crotch, ladies.  I’m serious.

Last week, during a debate on Florida legislation that would prevent union dues from being automatically deducted from government paychecks, Scott Randolph (D-Orlando) used his time during floor debate to call the GOP out on their hypocrisy.  He pointed out that the GOP is staunchly “small government” when it comes to business, but “big government” when it comes to the little guy and their own pet interests — like lady parts.

At one point Randolph suggested that his wife “incorporate her uterus” to stop Republicans from pushing measures that would restrict abortions. Republicans, after all, wouldn’t want to further regulate a Florida business.

Apparently the GOP leadership of the House didn’t like the one-liner.

They told Democrats that Randolph is not to discuss body parts on the House floor.

“The point was that Republicans are always talking about deregulation and big government,” Randolph said Thursday. “And I always say their philosophy is small government for the big guy and big government for the little guy. And so, if my wife’s uterus was incorporated or my friend’s bedroom was incorporated, maybe they (Republicans) would be talking about deregulating.

It’s not like I used slang,” said Randolph, who actually got the line from his wife. He said Republicans voiced concern about young pages hearing the word uterus.

“I think it’s a sad commentary about what we think about sex education in the state,” he said.

He’s right.  We all know that.  According to the Teabilly Doctrine, the government should be teeny-tiny when it comes to regulating big business.  But when it comes to lady business, the government is so fucking big that I wouldn’t be surprised if the military starts forcing women to quarter soldiers in their vaginas.

IT COULD HAPPEN.

::ahem::

Here’s what Katie Betta, the Florida GOP spokeswoman — woman! – had to say: (DANGER! SCARY VAGINA AHEAD!!1)

South Dakota's Proposed Law is Truly Fucked Up

Further to John Cole’s post on South Dakota’s proposed law over at Balloon Juice (and my post about it below), consider this map (via Pleated Jeans), compiled from Census data:

41. South Dakota: highest rate of forcible rape 76.5 per 100,000

There’s that “forcible” word again.

I followed the links to try to determine what “forcible” means. I’ve spent fifteen minutes on teh Google thus far, and the answer is, “I don’t fucking know.” The map references census information; the census information provides a link, which sends you to a PDF download, which, in turn, sends you to a dead link about dinosaurs. I searched the FBI’s website and found that there seems to be some dispute about the definition of “forcible rape.” I dug a little deeper and found that dispute relates to whether or not to include men as victims. (They should be.) There seems to be no clarification about the word “forcible”: Continue reading

South Dakota Wants to Make it Totally Cool to Murder Abortion Providers

What the–?!

I have no words:

A law under consideration in South Dakota would expand the definition of “justifiable homicide” to include killings that are intended to prevent harm to a fetus—a move that could make it legal to kill doctors who perform abortions. The Republican-backed legislation, House Bill 1171, has passed out of committee on a nine-to-three party-line vote, and is expected to face a floor vote in the state’s GOP-dominated House of Representatives soon.

“The bill in South Dakota is an invitation to murder abortion providers.”

The bill, sponsored by state Rep. Phil Jensen, a committed foe of abortion rights, alters the state’s legal definition of justifiable homicide by adding language stating that a homicide is permissible if committed by a person “while resisting an attempt to harm” that person’s unborn child or the unborn child of that person’s spouse, partner, parent, or child. If the bill passes, it could in theory allow a woman’s father, mother, son, daughter, or husband to kill anyone who tried to provide that woman an abortion—even if she wanted one.

Georgia Republican Bobby Franklin: You say you’re a rape victim? Uh-uh — not so fast. Prove it!

Fuck these people. Seriously.

Fresh off the heels of the Republican effort to redefine rape, Georgia Republicans have begun their latest assault on women1: Representative Bobby Franklin (R-GA) has introduced a bill to change the state’s criminal and civil codes so that victims of rape, stalking, and domestic violence can no longer be called “victims” but must be called “accusers” until the defendant has been convicted.

Let that sink in for a minute.  If your brain hasn’t exploded already, proceed with caution.  I make no guarantees about the intacted-ness of your grey matter upon reading the rest of this post.

The downgrading of “victim” to mere “accuser” applies only to rape, as far as I can tell.  If you’ve been mugged, or robbed, or defrauded, you’re still a victim.  (And poor you, by the way.)  If some person has violated you sexually without your consent, however, you’re just an accuser: we don’t quite believe you yet; we need to know how much you had to drink; we need to determine whether you were wearing slutty boots, fuck me heels, or booty shorts; we also need to know whether or not you’re just saying you were raped because he didn’t call you the next day.

According to the language of the bill, its purpose is: Continue reading
