My President is a feminist II – President Obama addresses Planned Parenthood supporters.

“Let’s be clear here: Women are not an interest group…. They’re half of this country.”

“If you truly values families, you shouldn’t play politics with a woman’s health.”

Word.

One More Win in the Fight Against the War on Women™, in Arizona

UPDATE:  BREAKING NEWS!!

Via @LbrlOkie77 on Twitter, an Oklahoma county judge struck down as unconstitutional the Oklahoma State-Sanctioned Rape aka Transvaginal Probe Law. It had been blocked temporarily, and now it’s permanently gone. Another win for #TeamUterati!

END OF UPDATE

We’re winning the fight against the War on Women™

Remember when I wrote about the two small victories in the fight against the War on Women™, one of them concerning the Right to Shame Employees as Sluts and Refuse to Pay for Their Contraception Bill in Arizona?  I said that even though Arizona Rep. Debbie Lesko’s (R-Traitortoallwomenville) new version of the bill was still invasive and odious, the fact that she was rewriting it at all because of the national outcry over it was a small win for us.

I wrote that post assuming that the bill would pass, because, you know, it’s Arizona where it seemed as if no law is too punishing of women, LGBTQ, and undocumented workers.  This bill should have sailed right through the legislature, only to be signed into law by Governor Jan Brewer (R-Crazybittertown).

It didn’t.

Let me say that again.  The slut-shaming, protect-our-religious-freedoms, give-all-the-power-to-the-employers bill didn’t pass in Arizona.

Helping anti-choice terrorists, one name at a time.

Last week, I got all caught up in my anti-War on Women fury and tweeted an article that, it transpired, was three years old. Oopsie!

In my defense, though, it was about a law in Oklahoma that was really, really heinous and had actually passed, so my brain was a bit addled. This law (later struck down by the courts) would have required that the details of every abortion conducted in the state be posted on a public website:

The questionnaire doesn’t include the woman’s name or “any information specifically identifying the patient,” but it does ask for age, race, level of education, marital status, number of previous pregnancies, and the county in which the abortion was performed, information which opponents of the bill argue would be enough to identify a woman in a small town. The questionnaire also asks about the mother’s reason for the abortion, her method of payment, and even what type of insurance she has, as well as whether the fetus received anaesthetic and whether there was “an infant born alive as a result of the abortion.”

So, you know – phew! At least we dodged that one!

Except we didn’t.

Dear GOP: You do know how pregnancy works, right?

I have been pregnant four times.

These pregnancies led to the following four results, in this order: abortion, baby, miscarriage, baby.

These pregnancies occurred over a span of many years, across two continents, and in three different homes. There were at least seven different health care professionals involved, my hair styles varied widely, as did my levels of nausea. The only constant, in all four cases, other than me, was the presence of a penis.

It happened to be the penis I eventually married, but regardless, that is how pregnancy works. No matter who you are, no matter your sexuality, ability to reproduce, or family make-up, if there are children in your life, at some point along the way, there was a penis involved.

I mention this only because it seems the GOP may have forgotten.

Happy International Women’s Day, Lay-dees! The GOP War on Women Continues

I am this close to setting errrything on fire

It’s International Women’s Day, and I am fucking pissed.  I’m looking at you, Arizona, and you, Georgia, and you, the House of Representatives.  I am sure there are more reasons for me to be pissed, but these are the three I am aware of right now.  I will get to the reasons for my fury in a minute, but you know what else I am?

I’m tired, Angry Black Readers.  I’m tired of getting up every morning afternoon and reading what fresh hell the GOP has served up that day in the War on Women. I’m tired of reading how women are sluts and prostitutes for wanting affordable healthcare*, that we are too stupid to know what’s happening when we get pregnant, and that we should have to pay for the consequences of all our wanton, illicit, sybaritic sex.

7 of the last 10 posts I’ve written have been about women’s issues.  Every damn time I write one, I think, “I can’t do this again.”  I get so pissed off and infuriated by the bullshit**, I want to stab everyone I see with my rusty pitchfork™.  I’m tired of reading posts like this one by my esteemed colleague, Emily, on how many abortion laws the GOP have passed/want to pass/will pass.  Remember way back when the 2010 silly season was happening?  What did the GOP run on?  Jobs.  What did they do the minute they got into office?  They started sticking their hands up women’s uteri – and there is no sign they are backing down.

Backing down?  Fuck no.  They are ramping up the craziness in a desperate attempt to stave off their inevitable defeat.  Despite my pessimistic outlook overall, I do believe that we who believe in a women’s right to decide matters relating to her own health are on the right side of history.  However, we are at a crossroads, and if we don’t kick out all these assholes in the next election, we’re going to see many more ugly abortion bills/laws such as the three I’m about to highlight.

430 abortion restrictions introduced this year alone.

I’ve had an abortion. (If you’re an old hand around these parts, you’re aware of this fact, because I’ve noted it before).

I’ve had an abortion, but I’ll be honest: For me, it wasn’t an easy decision. I don’t believe I ended a life, but I know I ended the potential for life, and while it was the best of (what felt to me like) two bad choices, that didn’t make it a happy thing.

I figure that’s ok. I’m not required meet the anti-choice stereotype of just loooooving me some good ol’ abortions in order to have the right to avail myself of a legal medical procedure. One may be conflicted, unsure, sad, even grieving, and still be pro-choice.

Which is why, despite whatever ambivalence I may have had about my own abortion, the following information (from a post by Sarah Kliff on the Washington Post‘s WonkBlog) makes my hair stand on end:

A Personhood Law Taken to the Logical and Grotesque Conclusion: A Short Story

This past week month year in ABLC land has been filled with uteri and vaginae-related news, mainly about the GOP’s War on Women™, to be precise.  On the front page alone, as I type this, we have a post by ABL, sending out a uterus-shaped symbol to all the Uterati so we can gather all the anti-women bills that are being considered/passed across the country in one place, a guest-post by @ThundarKitteh on all the anti-women dumbfuckery going on in her state of Indiana, a guest-post by @deaniemills on the outrageous state-sanctioned rape bill that has passed in her state of Texas, and another post by ABL on the postponement of the “Personhood” Bill in Virginia, due to the national outcry that has risen over it.  My own last post was on the flak the Girl Scouts have been receiving because of a perceived connection with the newest manufactured bogeyman of the right, Planned Parenthood.  Right beneath my last post is an excellent post by roadkillrefugee on the real reason Glenn Beck nailed himself to the Catholic Church cross over the whole birth control nontraversy.

By the way, I haven’t bought GS cookies in years.  Tonight, I changed that by buying 5 boxes of my personal favorite, Lesbian Cunnilingalongs (h/t @socratic on teh Twitter Machine.  Actual name, Tagalongs.  So. Damn. Delicious.  Peanut butter and chocolate go together like me and Margaret Cho*.  They make me want to listen do, err, listen to Melissa Ferrick all night long.) at a nearby supermarket just so I could support my local Lil Uterati (h/t, my angry black overlady).

Happy Valentine’s Day, Ladies of Virginia! Your GOP Hates You and Your Uteri

Hey!  Women of Virginia!  I bet you didn’t realize that on this Valentine’s Day, the GOP in your state have planned a special Valentine’s prezzie juuuuuuust for you.  It comes in the form of two very restrictive anti-abortion bills, and because they have a supermajority in the House, both bills passed in the House today!

The first bill says that a person is a person the minute a sperm and an egg collide, like two ships in the night.  In other words, a personhood bill, even though they don’t call it that.  The same kind of bill that, when put to the voters of Mississippi, it was soundly defeated.  It passed the House in VA, 66-32.

The second bill is the lovely, “Hey, we’re going to do a completely meaningless procedure before you’re allowed to have an abortion and stick something up your vagina at the same time” bill.  It passed the House in VA, 63-36.

Fox and the GOP Want to Wage War on Women? Game. On.

Fox News is neither foxy nor news

In a truth-based universe, Fox News would have to call itself Fox Dispenser of Manufactured Sexist Racist Classist Homophobic Outrage and Bullshit*, but we don’t live in that universe, so they get to call themselves Fox News with nary an FCC sanction in sight.  Sure, once in awhile, one of the bobbleheads, usually Shep Smith, will slip up and tell the truth, but for the most part, they are there solely to incite their base and spread fear and hatred of the dreaded lie-bruls.

Therefore, the news that someone on Fox had said something inflammatory, ignorant, hateful, and downright nasty did not surprise me.  The fact that it was a woman saying mean, hateful shit about other women did not surprise me, either.  Let’s face it – any woman willing to go on Fox other than to combat the lies is going to be more misogynistic than the guys on Fox, just as any POC willing to debase him/herself by showing up on Fox  will say the most hateful racist things ever.  Why?  It’s the nature of the beast, the same reason why prominent women and POC in the GOP are so damned sexist/racist respectively – in order to make your way to the top in the GOP if you’re not an old white guy, you have to give them cover for all the hateful shit they say/do.
