Idaho Senate to Vote on Mandatory Ultrasound Bill

The Idaho Senate is set to vote on its mandatory ultrasound bill (SB 1387) and may do so as early as tomorrow — March 19.  And yes, there’s enough transvaginal probing for the whole family:

The Texas Sonogram Law Is Traumatic and Horrifying for Women: One Woman’s Ordeal

‘We Have No Choice’: One Woman’s Ordeal with Texas’ New Sonogram Law

This is what government intrusion on a woman’s choice has wrought.  It’s heartbreaking.

Halfway through my pregnancy, I learned that my baby was ill. Profoundly so. My doctor gave us the news kindly, but still, my husband and I weren’t prepared. Just a few minutes earlier, we’d been smiling giddily at fellow expectant parents as we waited for the doctor to see us. In a sonography room smelling faintly of lemongrass, I’d just had gel rubbed on my stomach, just seen blots on the screen become tiny hands. For a brief, exultant moment, we’d seen our son—a brother for our 2-year-old girl.

Shorter PA Governor on Ultrasound Bill: Just close your eyes, sluts.

Call or email Governor Corbett. Pennsylvanianians, search for and call your representative.

As I wrote a couple weeks ago, Pennsylvania’s ultrasound bill is a disaster for women.

Governor Corbett’s defense of that ultrasound bill  demonstrates exactly how indifferent he is to women’s health.

From Think Progress:

Gov. Tom Corbett (R) reaffirmed this week that he supports the anti-abortion measure so long as it’s not obtrusive because women could simply close their eyes during the procedure:

"Illinois War on Women: Chattel Rhymes with Cattle" by @QuadCityPat

[Here's a guest post from QuadCityPat. Illinois's "Ultrasound  Opportunity" Bill is terrible. It actually requires women to consent to financial responsibility for state-sanctioned rape. Really.  -ABLxx]

I stand corrected.  I stand dumbfounded. Due to this debacle The Ultrasound Opportunity Bill, I’m standing up for the rights of women in my state.

In my previous post, I mentioned that Illinois has a Democratic Governor and State House.  I said that there were no direct assaults on the rights of my wife and daughters.  Well I was wrong.

The Ultrasound Opportunity Bill was brought to the floor of the House by the House Agricultural Committee. Let that sink in for a moment .  Here in Illinois, we don’t just treat women like chattel, we treat them like cattle. It passed with votes from Republicans and Democrats and many of the sponsors on the floor are DEMOCRATS and by my count at least two Democratic women co-sponsored.  What the hell?

This outrage cannot stand.  The bill calls for a transvaginal ultrasound be taken 24 hours prior to an abortion, then the pregnant women is offered a chance to view the ultrasound.  If she declines she has to sign a waiver that stays on file at Public Health.  So not only is a woman treated like livestock, but if she refuses to view the grainy computer image of the Area 51 experiment growing in her gut, she goes on a list! Great idea, truly grand. Continue reading

Another (Small) Victory: Alabama Backs Off State-Sanctioned Rape

This just in:

A lawmaker in Alabama is backing off a provision that would have required women in his state to undergo a transvaginal ultrasound before getting an abortion — similar to a much-maligned measure in Virginia that was also eventually scrapped.

State Sen. Clay Scofield (R) submitted a bill last week that would have required a woman to undergo an ultrasound before she could get an abortion. The bill would have mandated that the doctor decide whether to perform a transabdominal or transvaginal ultrasound, “whichever would display the embryo or fetus more clearly.”

“We’re not requiring it unless the woman wants to get an abortion. If she doesn’t want to get an abortion, she doesn’t have to do it,” Scofield said last week. Continue reading

#WaronWomen: Pennsylvania State-Sanctioned Rape Law is Most Cruel Yet

Pennsylvania is going all-in on the War on Women.  Like Alabama, it requires your urgent attention. HB 1077 faces a full vote in mid-March.  Call or email Governor Corbett.  Sign this petition.  (Pennsylvanianians, search for and call your representative.)

Yes, I mixed my metaphors, but do you really want me to make an “all-in/poker/vagina” joke? I didn’t think so. Let’s just cut right to the chase, shall we?

From Raw Story:

Even as the transvaginal ultrasound bill in Virginia was causing national outrage, Pennsylvania conservatives were quietly pushing a even more restrictive abortion bill. The legislation is designed with so many difficult and differing restrictions that long-time abortion policy analyst Elizabeth Nash at the Guttmacher Institute told Raw Story, “I’ve never seen anything like it.” Continue reading

War on Women: Alabama State-Sanctioned Rape Bill

Last week, thousands of women protested and ultimately ran Virginia’s state-sanctioned rape train off the rails.  It’s time to do the same in Alabama.  Call or email Governor Bentley and ask him to veto it.  Sign this petition.

Alabama Governor Bentley claimed yesterday that he just learned about the state-sanctioned rape bill that is quickly moving through the Alabama legislature:

Yesterday Governor Bentley (who, unlike SB12′s “author,” has a medical degree) said he had just heard about this bill.  He declined to take a position on SB12.  Call or email him and ask him to veto it. Continue reading

"UTERUS SMASH!" by @ThundarKitteh

[Here's a guest post from the inimitable ThundarKitteh about Indiana Republicans' War on Women. It's informative and hilarious.  -ABLxx]

Just a reminder for all of us womenfolk in Indiana: Stop voting for Republicans, particularly the ones of the male persuasion. No, seriously…just stop. These are not the same type of Republicans for whom your parents and grandparents voted, not even close. I know I’m writing this to you in vain, as you’ve been voting straight-ticket Republican your whole life, but maybe a couple of you have actually been paying attention over the past few years.

Now, I have no idea what is wrong with these supposed “men”. You’d think that by now someone would have reminded them that they slithered out of a vagina all covered in goo, and that they need to remember to respect the vagina. But no. See, that would require thinking. And that’s bad.

The opposite is happening. Let’s rewind to the spring of 2011 here in Indiana. For some time, a literal and figurative group of pricks had been trying their damnedest to pass as many laws as they possibly could which put various bans on abortion. In fact, there were over 916 attempts1 to do so. Want me to write that number out? Nine hundred and sixteen attempts. Somebody hates women. Actually, a whole bunch of them do. But who, oh who I ask, will step forward to be the biggest douche weasel in all of Indiana? Why no other than “Representative” Eric Turner (I have no idea who he represents, and quite frankly, if you’re a woman and you voted for him on more than one occasion, my reproductive organs hate you with an unbridled passion and if I find you, I will slap you with used tampons). "Rick Perry's Texas: State-Sanctioned Rape of Women" by @deaniemills

[Here's a guest post from @deaniemills about Texas's state-sanctioned rape *law* and her personal experience in having a transvaginal sonogram. I emphasize "law" because it is already being enforced. -ABLxx]

According to a law passed by a Tea-Bagger Texas statehouse and signed as an “emergency measure” by Governor Rick Perry, and mis-presented to the public at the time the bill was passed, along with the 5th Circuit’s decision that this procedure CAN proceed even as the law itself is being appealed–women can now be legally raped in the state of Texas if they see a physician about getting an abortion.

By “rape,” I mean that the sonogram which is required by this law for all women seeking abortions in the first 10 weeks–which nearly all women now do–is not a “jelly on the belly” procedure, as State Rep. Carol Alvarado pointed out, in which you take off your clothes, put on a flimsy gown, climb up onto a cold table, have some colder jelly smeared on your stomach, and then wait while a technician or doctor rolls the wand around and interprets the picture that appears on the computer screen.
