Michigan’s Emergency Managers in the national spotlight

In the current issue The Nation magazine, I have a piece titled “The Scandal of Michigan’s Emergency Managers” which is a general overview of Public Act 4, Michigan’s Emergency Manager law. For regular Eclectablog readers, there isn’t much new there but for those who haven’t been following, it’s likely to be a bit of a bombshell.
Excerpt after the jump.
The most distressing part of William Greider’s column (“Obama’s Bad Bargain,” The Nation, Aug.15-22) may be what it revealed about the future of the progressive movement.
William Greider, The Nation
Contrary to the growingly popular stance in American politics that common sense is akin to defeatism, “grand bargains” and “pragmatic compromises” do not, as Greider claims, destroy the “crown jewels of democratic reform.” They are the currency of the democratic empire.
In criticizing the debt deal, Greider has amplified the commonly aired grievance from the left that President Obama is insufficiently liberal and uncommitted to the progressive cause.
His claim that Obama “abandoned” core Democratic values during the debt ceiling negotiation misinterprets the president’s priorities and misdirects a grievance that progressives ought to be aiming at themselves.

As y’all well know by now, Angry Black Lady is a communist pinko social librul terrorist sympathizer. She likes hanging out with Puerto Mexicans, (wouldn’t mind if we put one on the Supreme Court), and she thinks Obama is, more or less, the bee’s messiah.
Most of my views, as I relayed in a recent installment of Angry Black Lady Chronicles, stem from my upbringing, including my mom who saw her parents struggle to put food on the table in the 1950s after Joe McCarthy and his band of fuckwits, decided that my grandpa was a Commie and was no longer fit to serve as a teacher in the Philadelphia School District. So yeah. I relish sticking it to “the man,” whomever “the man” happens to be at any given time.
