A Growing Rift Between Religious Groups And The GOP

The Wing-nut Takeover Of the GOP Continues

I’ve never understood how people who call themselves Christians can belong to the Republican Party. I read the Bible many years ago and seem to remember lessons that taught me to care for my fellow humans, to show compassion, to turn the other cheek and to do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

That doesn’t exactly describe the modern Republican Party now does it?

With the craziness happening in the political world over contraception, the following story from ThinkProgress makes me think that the GOP is overcompensating in their reaction to the contraceptive issue.

Earlier this month, the nation was barraged with media coverage of the Catholic Bishops’ opposition to regulations promulgated under the Affordable Care Act protecting working women’s access to contraception. The loudness of the bishops’ complaints, which were echoed by conservative luminaries ranging from Speaker John Boehner to GOP presidential frontrunners Rick Santorum and Mitt Romney, easily could have conveyed the misimpression that churches and other religious groups are at odds with the Affordable Care Act.

The War on Leeches. No, Wait. It's the War on TEACHERS.

IT’S WARRRR!!!!

It’s been a rough year for teachers in this country, particularly in the Midwest. Wisconsin notwithstanding, teachers in Michigan may be taking it on the chin from Republicans more than any other group in the country. Last Thursday, we learned that GOP House Speaker Jase Bolger’s next legislative target is teachers’ pensions.

That’s right: pensions. It’s not enough that school funding has been drastically cut back, forcing school districts into difficult financial straits. It’s not enough that they have made it “more illegal” for teachers to strike. It’s not enough that the new Emergency Manager law is being used as a cudgel to force even more wage concessions. It’s not enough that their ability to collectively bargain has been severely curtailed. It’s not enough that they will now pay more for their health insurance after giving up wages to secure what they have. No, none of this is enough. Now their pensions, the money they will live on in their retirement, are in the bullseye.

Whether Michigan school districts will see more funding next year will depend on the state’s economy, but lawmakers are working on pension reforms to free up money for Michigan K-12 classrooms, state House Speaker Jase Bolger, R-Marshall, said Wednesday.

~SNIP~

“Our goal is to make schools better” by giving school officials “the tools they need” to better contain costs and improve teacher quality, Bolger said Wednesday during an hourlong discussion with the Kalamazoo Gazette in his office at the state Capitol.

“The whole point was to face reality,” he said of the Republicans’ 2011 agenda this spring on education. “I don’t think the past 10 years were helpful, where schools got marginal increases in funding, and there was not an attempt to contain costs.”

But wait! There’s more teacher-bashing goodness!

Handcuffing Ourselves to the White House Email Server: A Guide to Online Petitions

So it’s come to this.

President Obama is talking about making a deal with the Republicans and Democrats in Congress on a budget plan, and anonymously-sourced articles are appearing in the major political newspapers, and on the basis of statements from a “Democratic official familiar with the administration’s thinking“, the EmoProgs are losing their shit.

And they’re sending you emails about it.

Bold Progressives/PCCC (Adam Green):

“President Obama: If you cut Social Security, Medicare, or Medicaid benefits for me, my family, or families like mine, don’t ask for a penny of my money or an hour of my time in 2012. I’m going to focus on electing bold progressive candidates who will fight to protect our Democratic legacy.” Click to add your name.

CREDO Action (Matt Lockshin):

We can’t be silent and allow President Obama to cave to Republicans, and put some of the most important and successful programs in our country on the chopping block.

House Democrats and most Democratic Senators have already said they will not go along. It is not too late.

Tell President Obama: Protect Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. Click here to automatically sign the petition.

MoveOn.org (Daniel Mintz):

Can you sign our emergency petition to Democrats in Congress and tell them to stand up and tell the President they will not vote for Social Security and Medicare benefits cuts?

Add your name here.

President Obama is making a huge mistake that will cost our country dearly.

Follow me below the fold for a some thoughts about these emails, what they represent and what opportunities they miss.

Republican Hypocrisy (No! Really?) on the Debt Ceiling

The Koch brothers paid for this microphone!

Branding!

You’ll want to sit down for this.

Republicans are hypocrites.

Remember the Ryan Budget that all but 4 House and 5 Senate GOPers voted for? The brave, serious, grown-up, responsible budget plan supported by all True Fiscal Conservatives?

The Ryan Budget raises the national debt by $6 trillion over the next decade.

Everyone who voted for the Ryan Budget put him/herself on record as supporting a budget that will require Congress to raise the debt ceiling, not just this one time, but several more times in the future.

They’ve already demonstrated by their vote on the Ryan Budget that they are willing to “settle” for a budget that fails to prevent the US from exceeding its current debt limit. They’ve admitted that it isn’t possible.

If they had gotten their way and the Ryan Budget had become law, they would still be required to vote on raising the debt ceiling this summer. And yet, many of them would threaten to vote against raising the debt ceiling anyway, because they’re not the peoples’ representatives, they’re economic terrorists, bent on finishing the work that Osama Bin Laden began on 9/11.

I chirpified the key talking points as a series of Tweets which you are welcome to share. They are posted below the fold.

Sarah Gives Us a History Lesson on Paul Revere [Updated!]

[I'm back-posting this because Allan's post on #CokeCanClarenceGate is the big story of the day.1 This is real life, people! -ABL]

The Beastie Boys did a better job…

Sarah Palin was in Boston today, and she said Some More Unintelligible Things, Mowgli-style:

The deadpan look on the the reporter’s face is priceless!  It looks like she’s mind-yelling: “ENGLISH, MOTHERFUCKER! DO YOU SPEAK IT?!” à la Sam Jackson:

Illinois State Senator Christine Radogno (R.-Killah Bee) Heeds Financial Advice from… the Wu?!

Hilarity ensues

For some odd reason, Illinois Republican Senator Christine Radogno decided to quote Raekwon1 on the floor last week.

No, seriously:

The way she says “Ray Kwahn from the Woo Tayng Clan” will never not be funny.

Of course, I was immediately reminded of this:

The GOP Primary Debate: Checking out my C-List Competition

Hello, Bitchez.  As you probably know, the first GOP primary debate was held last night.  For some unfathomable reason, I was not invited.    It might have something to do with the silly 1% of national votes thing, but I think it’s just because they are racialist and sexualist and can’t handle having a mouthy Asian broad on stage with all those conservative men.  Oh, and they probably were afraid I’d drop a few fuck-bombs and wouldn’t be fast enough to bleep me out.   At any rate, they didn’t invite me.  I thought about doing a one-person debate like this guy did, and then post it on the YouTubes late like he did.  But, that would be actual work and shit, so I forwent that.   In fact, I didn’t even watch it; I bet many of you did not watch it either.  Let’s face it, I have better things to do with my time–like banging my head repeatedly against the wall and watching a giant lump form on my forehead.  That would be far less painful than watching the C-list of Republican candidates debate each other in very serious tones as they lie through their pearly whites.

Attention, ABL Readers! I Have Two Important Announcements to Make

Hi.  *Waves at you*

Dear Angry Black Ladies.  I stand here before you today to make two very important announcements.  Are you sitting down?  Well, you better be because this is gonna knock your socks off–if you are wearing socks, that is.  If not, then it’ll just…um, knock you over.  Which is why you should sit down.  You sitting?  OK.  Here goes.

I’m engaged.

Ouch!  Hey, tone it down.  I can hear your screeches of disbelief all the way over here in snowy Minnesota.

Engaged?  How the hell can that be, asiangrrlMN, I hear you asking yourself.  You aren’t even fucking dating anyone.  Sadly, both of those things are true.  Oh, wait, you meant fucking as an adjective to dating, not as an either/or thing.  Never mind.  Anyhoo, you read that right.  I, asiangrrlMN, am engaged to be married within the next two months.  Why so fast, I hear you ask.  By the way, you’re very talkative tonight, but I understand.  You have questions.  I have answers.

Remember when I wrote this post about switching to the Republican Party for the mad monies?  Well, I’ve been thinking about that lately.  Sure, I could be a mere pundit/shock jock like BillO or Beck or Limbaugh, but that seems so…limited.  I mean, I would enjoy the acting aspect of it and getting to cry big, sobby tears–oh wait.  I’m a female.  I can’t cry on camera because that would mean I am weak.  It’s only manly and a sign of patriotic pain when Glenn Beck does it.  Got it.

Anyhoo, I could do that and rake in the mad monies and call it a day.  But, really, where is the satisfaction in that?  It’s an easy con, if, albeit, an unpleasant one to maintain.  There is no thrill in that hunt.  So, I decided to up the ante.  What would be more fun that pretending to be a batshitcrazyrightwingnutbagger TV personality and make mad monies off of it?*   I pondered it for awhile, and then it hit me.  An idea so brilliant in its hope and audacity, I can only unroll it in parts.  So, this is post one of my grand idea, and the second big announcement.  Ready for it?

I am running as President in 2012.

Defunding Planned Parenthood: It's Official. The GOP Hates Women.

Fuck these people.

I have (or at least I think I have) avoided coming right out and stating that Republicans hate women.  It seemed to be such a gross and unfair generalization.

But with each passing day, as they attempt to redefine “rape” and “rape victim”; as they attempt to pass legislation that permits Dr. Conscientious Objector to refuse to perform emergency abortion services and to also not require hospitals to transfer women to a facility that will provide such services (thus, quite literally, leaving women to die); as they attempt to redefine justifiable homicide such that the murder of any person threatening the life of a fetus becomes justified (does this include the murder of the mother herself?  Can a scorned boyfriend or husband decide to murder his girlfriend or wife because he suspects that she intends to make a choice about her body and whether or not to carry a pregnancy to term?), it becomes more and more difficult for me to avoid stating the obvious: Continue reading
