I knew him.

Powerful, honest rape awareness video from RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network) – anything I say (other than to hat-tip my good internet buddy sara_l_r, on whose blog I first saw it) will only detract and distract.

GOP Justification for State-Sanctioned Rape in Virginia

*blink*

(via rhrealitycheck.org)

Apparently, once vaginally-penetrated, always vaginally-penetrated:

During the floor debate on Tuesday, Del. C. Todd Gilbert announced that “in the vast majority of these cases, these [abortions] are matters of lifestyle convenience.” (He has since apologized.) Virginia Democrat Rep. David Englin, who opposes the bill, has said Gilbert’s statement “is in line with previous Republican comments on the issue,” recalling one conversation with a GOP lawmaker who told him that women had already made the decision to be “vaginally penetrated when they got pregnant.” (I confirmed with Englin that this quote was accurate.) Fox News's Liz Trotta on Sexual Assault in the Military: Men Get Rapey Sometimes. Get Over it!

Jesus take the wheel

Seriously.  Just take the wheel and drive the car into a tree:

During a segment about new rules regarding women in the military, Fox News contributor Liz Trotta attacked the Department of Defense for increasing spending on support programs for victims of sexual assault. Trotta also reacted to a Pentagon report showing a 64% increase in violent sexual assaults since 2006 by stating: “Well, what did they expect? These people are in close contact.” Continue reading

Dear Asian-Americans: I am so sorry that I didn’t warn you about the GOP.

Or: The GOP – they really don’t seem to like much of anybody!

Last week, I wrote a post asking the GOP to just shut up about black people, a post which got a surprising amount of attention across the web.

In the aftermath of that, I found myself wondering: “Huh. Who is the GOP going to demonize and belittle next in this election cycle?”

And I knew: Asian-Americans. A post began to form itself in my head, one I intended to write sometime this week.

I mean, they’ve demonized and belittled gay people already:

Tweet of the Day – Ron Paul, Abortion, and Honest Rape™

Christ on a crouton

I’m awarding myself Tweet of the Day because I’m self-congratulatory and because you need to watch Ron Paul answer a question about his views on rape, abortion, and reproductive rights:

“If it’s an honest rape,” Paul replied, “that individual should go immediately to the emergency room, I would give them a shot of estrogen.” He claimed, however, that if a woman is “seven months pregnant” and says that she was raped, “It’s a little bit of a different story.”

Apparently there’s something called Honest Rape™ and that is something different than Dishonest Rape™:

Today in Rick Santorum: 'Eat a Bag of Dicks' Edition

Rick Santorum needs to find a hot fire and ceremoniously hurl himself into it.

Why?  For Two reasons:

1. Santorum thinks that women who are impregnated by their rapist have been given a gift, albeit in a “broken way” and should “make the best of a bad situation.”  He also thinks that women carrying the child of their rapist should just “accept the gift God has given to [them].” Gee whiz, Rick — thanks for being there to tell all women what’s “best” for them.  Also?  Tell God he’s a really shitty gift-giver.

2. Santorum lacks the sort of integrity that any person aspiring to the highest political office should have; the sort of integrity that would require correcting a Floridian woman at a campaign event when she tells you that Obama is “an avowed Muslim” who has “no legal right to be President.”

Major win for rape victims – Obama admin updates definition of rape

Just like George W. Bush, only different

Today the Obama administration announced that it is updating the formal definition of rape. This move will help many rape victims who were previously unaccounted for achieve justice against their perpetrators and will more accurately reflect the extent of the problem of sexual crimes in our country.

Attorney General Eric Holder today announced revisions to the Uniform Crime Report’s (UCR) definition of rape, which will lead to a more comprehensive statistical reporting of rape nationwide. The new definition is more inclusive, better reflects state criminal codes and focuses on the various forms of sexual penetration understood to be rape. The new definition of rape is: “The penetration, no matter how slight, of the vagina or anus with any body part or object, or oral penetration by a sex organ of another person, without the consent of the victim.” The definition is used by the FBI to collect information from local law enforcement agencies about reported rapes.

“Rape is a devastating crime and we can’t solve it unless we know the full extent of it,” said Vice President Biden, a leader in the effort to end violence against women for over 20 years and author of the landmark Violence Against Women Act. “This long-awaited change to the definition of rape is a victory for women and men across the country whose suffering has gone unaccounted for over 80 years.”

"Aftermath" by @Thundarkitteh

[This is a guest post by @Thundarkitteh. I thank her for sharing her story.  -ABLxx]

When I was 19, I was engaged to a monster who drugged and raped me on multiple occasions. Since I had blocked out whatever I remembered from it, the relationship continued and got worse, to where physical abuse started. I also miscarried twins. By the time I left, I was 20, scared shitless, depressed, and still trying to process what the fuck had happened to me. Since I couldn’t process it all, I decided to marry my schoolwork instead. I graduated with a 3.6 GPA (3.8 in my field (Ancient Greek), it would have been a 4.0 were it not for that bastard Plato), got accepted to Tulane University, packed, moved, and tried to carry on from there. I swore I was fine.

Then it happened. I remembered.

It was as if a trapdoor had opened and I fell to rock bottom. Then another trapdoor opened, to a place I didn’t know existed. I now call it Rock Bottom’s Basement. It is the scariest place in this world to find yourself. It is so dark, so bleak, so utterly hopeless. I had to get out of there as quickly as possible. I had no idea how to do this. But I knew that if I didn’t, I would die.

The next day, after getting no sleep because I was too scared of what my brain would produce, I went to a professor of mine, briefly told him what happened, and told him I needed time off. He told me to go home and he would cover for me. I doubt he’d be reading this, but if he is: Thank you, Dr. N.

I do not remember much of the next week, other than I didn’t leave my apartment. I couldn’t eat, I would pass out from exhaustion due to constantly bawling, wake up in full fight-or-flight mode. The skin under my eyes turned raw and red. All I did was drink coffee and smoke. If I tried to walk across a room, I’d literally collapse on the ground and cry. I didn’t want to exist. But I didn’t want to die. I had no clue what I wanted. I call this the “un-being” phase.
