Conservative Columnist Co-opts Black History Month to Honor Republicans

As Black History Month draws to a close, world-renowned conservative columnist Cal Thomas wants to remind liberals everywhere who are too stoned to remember basic American history that the Republican Party really really really loves black people.

Or at least they did at one time.

Abraham Lincoln freed the slaves, Thomas informed us this week in his syndicated column, “Black (Liberal) History Month.” A Republican-led Congress supported the Emancipation Proclamation and the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments. Republicans in the 38th Congress passed legislation creating the “Negro Calvary,” also known as Buffalo Soldiers, in the 1860s. And Ulysses “Snowflake” Grant, a Republican, signed the Civil Rights Act of 1875, which allowed blacks access to public accommodations—until it was ruled unconstitutional by the Supreme Court.

There’s a not-so-subtly-buried trend within this unflatteringly short list of historical “moments” when Republicans fought for African Americans: they all happened a long, long time ago—before even Thomas was born.

Pete Hoekstra pulls racist website down, Debbie Stabenow raises over $150K from it

After the devastating news coverage of the past week over the racist ad and website put up by Pete Hoekstra, he has now redirected Chinese-themed www.debbiespenditnow.com to his own website www.petespenditnot.com. The YouTube video is still up, however, with over a million views. Comments and ratings are still turned off for the very obvious reasons. On his new site is a new ad without the anti-China references.

Meanwhile, a money bomb for Senator Debbie Stabenow based on reaction to Hoekestra’s odious ad and website resulted in a big haul: over $150,000.

Donors have poured more than $150,000 into Michigan Sen. Debbie Stabenow’s campaign in response to an ad run this week by GOP rival Pete Hoekstra. [...]

Stabenow’s campaign asked donors to help her raise $144,000 in response to Hoekstra’s first ad, the amount his campaign planned to spend airing it.

Stabenow campaign officials report raising more than $150,000 as of Friday morning.

Pete Hoekstra is nearly giddy about all the attention his racist ad had garnered.

Hoekstra, a former Republican congressman from Holland, stood his ground Monday, saying the ad did what he wanted: It drew a clear contrast between himself and Democratic U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow.

“We knew we were taking an aggressive approach on this, but we’re in a time when people are fed up with the spending and we wanted to capture that frustration,” Hoekstra said. “It hits Debbie smack-dab between the eyes on the area where she is most vulnerable.”

Jon Stewart Fires Back at Donald Trump over "Racist" Charge

“I’ve taken criticism before. I’ve been called racist, stupid, an asshole, but this one hurts because of how much I respect Donald Trump…”

Yesterday I wrote a post about the silly Orange Supremacist calling Jon Stewart racist because Stewart used a funny voice to make a joke about kidnapping babies.

In response, John Cole said the following:

Do these idiots ever learn? Did Trump not see what happened to Jim Cramer? [Here's what happened to Jim Cramer. It isn't pretty. -ed.]

Why would you fuck with a guy who is wicked smart, surrounded by talented comedic writers and performers who basically have nothing to do but figure out how to spend a half hour of television time every night?

Nope. They never learn. And the writers at The Daily Show did not disappoint, using Trump’s dumbassery as a hook for hilarity about Ann “We Have Very Impressive Blacks” Coulter and her cockamamie notion that Herman Cain is “blacker” than Obama:

Does Sen. McCain take his orders from Rush Limbaugh, or does he just dislike black people?

Sen. John McCain supported the intervention in Libya.

He heralded the killing of Osama bin Laden. He supports continuing the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. And he believes Syria should be the next target of a military intervention.

But those Africans who are being slaughtered by the Lord’s Resistance Army?

Not. Worth. It.

After President Obama announced that he would be sending 100 military advisors into Central Africa, McCain had this to say:

I worry that with the best of intentions, that somehow we get engaged in a commitment that we can’t get out of. That’s happened before in our history and we need an explanation, and I’m very disappointed, again, that the administration has not consulted with members of Congress before taking such action.

Here’s the explanation: The Lord’s Resistance Army, “a notorious renegade group that has terrorized villagers in at least four countries with marauding bands that kill, rape, maim and kidnap with impunity,” is currently killing, raping, maiming and kidnapping with impunity.

Here’s the facts about the Obama administration consulting Congress: In May 2010, the United States Congress sent the “Lord’s Resistance Army Disarmament and Northern Uganda Recovery Act” to President Obama to sign into law, which he did, on May 24th. The bill passed by unanimous consent in the Senate and by a voice vote in the House.

Dog whistle racists throughout America, step the fuck aside, FOX NEWS has out classed all of you with today’s headline “Obama’s Hip-Hop BBQ Didn’t Create Jobs” which is an article on the President Obama’s 50th Birthday celebration that was held at the White House on Thursday, August 4.

For the unenlightened, “dog whistle racism” as defined by the Center for Social Inclusion is “also known as symbolic racism – is political campaigning or policy-making that uses coded words and themes that appeal to conscious or subconscious racist concepts and frames.”

Given the demographics of the FOX NEWS audience and their perceived attitudes on race you can imagine the reaction that this dog whistle will elicit from that crowd.

This headline and accompanying photo are blatant examples of dog whistle racism. “Hip-Hop” is code for “Black people” even though many white folks like hip-hop music and many Black folks don’t. “BBQ” is another great code, which when used in combination with “Hip-Hop,” implies that there were bunch of Black folks doing what you’d expect Black folks to do and that the leads to a reinforcement of the “othering” tactic which has been used multiple times against President Obama.

By my estimation (based upon a pool report and my assumption that the President’s immediate family, including mother-in-law, attended) there were at least 49 guests and only 20 of them, less than 50%, were African American. However the photo accompanying the article featured four African American men, Charles Barkley, President Obama, Chris Rock and Jay-Z.

Breitbart Trolls, Kymberly Wimberly, and the Arkansas Shenanigans

The other day on Twitter, I was challenged to provide “the other side” of the Kymberly Wimberly story. This challenge came from a Breitbart-affiliate — some person called “A.R. Ward” who touts himself as ““Combating racialism and Defending Colorblindness.”

Right.

See, the Breitbart troll [pictured here] didn’t like how “the left” rushed to judgment on the story about Kymberly Wimberly being stripped of her sole valedictorian status. In his view, the left’s rampant racialism (whateverthefuck that means — the only time I’ve ever heard the term “racialism” was in connection with a punchline to a joke delivered by David Brent on The Office UK) is the cause of baseless allegations of racism.  And such injustice against innocent white folks will not stand, man.

The troll wanted to take a “wait and see” approach, and said he wanted to hear what “the black superintendent” had to say about this so-called racism:

Arkansas High School Prevented Black Female Student From Being Valedictorian

Now THIS is some racist bullshit.

A high school in Arkansas would not permit a black female student with the highest GPA in her high school to be valedictorian of her graduating class, and appointed a white student with a lower GPA to serve as the black student’s co-valedictorian.

I wish I was kidding.   And yes, it is 2011.

When I first read this article, I figured it must be a joke.  I thought it was more life-imitates-The Onion theater.   It couldn’t possibly be serious, I thought, because: (a) it’s fucking ridiculous; (b) the high school is in Pine Bluff, which is less than an hour from Little Rock; and (c) the young woman’s name is Kimberly Wymberly (my apologies, you brilliant beautiful young woman, but I can’t let “Kimberly Wymberly” slide without comment.)

But nope! It’s not a joke.  It’s shameful and all involved should be fired.

Despite being told by school counselor’s that she had the highest GPA, Kimberly was not permitted to serve as valedictorian alone.  The girl’s mother claims to have overheard school personnel fretting about letting the Kimberly be the sole valedictorian for fear of causing “a big mess.”

That’s right. School personnel turned what would have been the proudest moment of Kimberly’s young life into sheer humiliation. And, to add insult to injury, when Kimberly’s mother showed up at a school board meeting to protest the decision, the school superintendent would not let her speak because she had filled out the wrong form — the ‘public comments” form instead of the “public participation” form.

Reggie Brown, the Barack Impersonator who debated Gary Johnson last Sunday, yukked it up for white folks once again, this time at the Republican Leadership Conference.

From The Washington Post:

A President Obama impersonator brought down the house Saturday at the Republican Leadership Conference, telling a string of racially themed jokes about the president.

The impersonator, Reggie Brown, took the stage at the annual presidential cattle call to the Bruce Springsteen song “Born in the USA” — an allusion to the birther controversy.

A sampling of what followed:

• On Black History Month: “Michelle celebrates the full month. I celebrate half.”

• “My mother loved a black man,” but “she was not a Kardashian.”

• A picture was shown of Obama and the first lady when he took office. The impersonator then showed a picture of what the Obamas will look like when the president leaves office, and it was the characters of Fred Sanford and his sister-in-law, Ethel, from the show “Sanford and Son.”
