My President is a feminist II – President Obama addresses Planned Parenthood supporters.

“Let’s be clear here: Women are not an interest group…. They’re half of this country.”

“If you truly values families, you shouldn’t play politics with a woman’s health.”

Word.

Remember When George H.W. Bush Supported Planned Parenthood and Family Planning?

Rachel Maddow had a great segment last night on how batshit crazy the Republican party has become over the last thirty years when it comes to reproductive rights and family planning.

Example Numero Uno? When Papa Bush was UN Ambassador, he sent a letter to the director of Planned Parenthood at the time, Alan Guttmacher, congratulating Planned Parenthood on the issuance of an eight cent “family planning” stamp, and stating he was “deeply appreciative of the dedication it symbolizes.”

Forty years later, George H.W. Bush has thrown his support behind Mitt “We’re gonna get rid of Planned Parenthood” Romney.

#WarOnWomen: Arizona Close to Defunding Planned Parenthood

And the War on Women marches on.

The Arizona Senate Committee on Healthcare and Medical Liability Reform approved HB 2800 which strips state funding from any group (like Planned Parenthood) that performs abortion even though existing state law and the fucking Hyde Amendment already prohibit the use of state/federal funds for abortion.

Mitt Romney: ‘Planned Parenthood — We’re Gonna Get Rid of That’

You and what army?

Democrats are hitting back hard against the growing threat that Romney poses to women’s health:

I get it, Mitt. You’re pandering to the wingnuts who think that Planned Parenthood is out there aborting babies eight days a week. You’re licking the boots of the wingnuts who believe that 90 percent of what Planned Parenthood does is abortion services. After all, Senator Kyl said it on the floor of Congress, so it must be true. (Of course he later qualified his lie by saying it wasn’t intended to be a factual statement. Funny, that — somehow, almost everything that erupts from the face-holes of Republicans are not intended to be factual statements.) And let’s not forget that in Wingnutopia, Planned Parenthood is erecting abortionplexes nationwide so that women can pop in for a quick mani/pedi and an abortion.

"Rick Perry's Texas: State-Sanctioned Rape of Women" by @deaniemills

[Here's a guest post from @deaniemills about Texas's state-sanctioned rape *law* and her personal experience in having a transvaginal sonogram. I emphasize "law" because it is already being enforced. -ABLxx]

According to a law passed by a Tea-Bagger Texas statehouse and signed as an “emergency measure” by Governor Rick Perry, and mis-presented to the public at the time the bill was passed, along with the 5th Circuit’s decision that this procedure CAN proceed even as the law itself is being appealed–women can now be legally raped in the state of Texas if they see a physician about getting an abortion.

By “rape,” I mean that the sonogram which is required by this law for all women seeking abortions in the first 10 weeks–which nearly all women now do–is not a “jelly on the belly” procedure, as State Rep. Carol Alvarado pointed out, in which you take off your clothes, put on a flimsy gown, climb up onto a cold table, have some colder jelly smeared on your stomach, and then wait while a technician or doctor rolls the wand around and interprets the picture that appears on the computer screen. Mamas, Don't Let Your Girl Scouts Grow Up to Work at Planned Parenthood

My Angry Black Readers probably remember this post by ABL about the Satanic, lezzie, whore-making Girl Scouts as imagined by Indiana House Republican, Bob Morris (R-Jackholeville).

Well, I have some good news in the GSA department and some bad news – which would you like first?  Good news?  I would have asked for the bad news first so I could finish up with some good news, but I defer to the wishes of my readers.

The good news comes via Rachel Maddow Steve Benen on Rachel Maddow’s blog.  This crazed bullshit by Bob Morris about the Girl Scouts was not appreciated at all.  Even some of his fellow Republicans thought he went too far – including the Speaker of the House Brian Bosma.  Speaker Bosma told his House colleagues that he bought 278 cases of Girl Scout Cookies in a 48-hour period in response to Rep. Morris’s incredibly asinine statements.

Bosma, R-Indianapolis, pointedly offered Girl Scout cookies throughout the day and munched them as he presided over the House.[...]

And when time came for the House to adjourn, he asked all lawmakers who had been Girl Scouts – and seemingly every female legislator stood – to give the daily motion to adjourn.

Shorter Indiana Rep. Bob Morris (R-Dipshit): Girl Scouts Turn Girls into Whores and Lesbians

First they came for the thin mints…

This is preposterous:

INDIANAPOLIS – A Fort Wayne lawmaker’s rant against the Girl Scouts went viral Monday after he called them a “radicalized organization” that supports abortion and promotes “homosexual lifestyles.

Rep. Bob Morris, R-Fort Wayne, sent a letter to Indiana House Republicans on Saturday explaining why he was the only member in the chamber not to sign onto a resolution last week celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Girl Scouts. Continue reading

Battle for Choice Heats Up in Alaska

There is a battle heating up in Alaska. Oddly, the rest of the country does not seem interested.

Planned Parenthood of the Great  Northwest is challenging an Alaska law that requires minors seeing abortion services to gain parental consent before the services can be rendered.  Planned Parenthood is basing their constitutionality challenge on both privacy and equal protection.

As of December 2010, a minor who seeks abortion in Alaska must first get parental consent before the procedure takes place or they must petition the court for a waiver to the parental consent requirement.

As of this writing, Alaska has had seven waiver requests.  Six of the requests were granted and one was withdrawn.

The trial is expected to last fifteen days.

President Obama Stands Up for Women's Health… AGAIN.

The contraception coverage debacle has been nothing short of ridiculous.

For the past couple weeks, we’ve been treated to scores of Republican men (primarily — and even a couple Democrats) using women’s health as a political football. Suddenly a decision to permit women free access to birth control became a War on Religion, as the GOP decided to up and move to Crazytown (population: them) in order to avoid talking about the issues that people actually give a shit about — jobs and the economy.

Today — whether by design or brilliant post-Crazytown strategery, President Obama “accommodated” the Catholic Church and the bishops who had been trying to convince us all that permitting women free access to contraception was a harbinger of the end of days.

Initially, I thought that the Administration, after instituting the rule, was taken aback by the right-wing freak out, but managed to strategize and negotiate its way around it.  Others have since convinced me that this was the plan all along — to force the Republicans to show their asses thereby demonstrating to Democratic and Republican women alike (as well as those crucial independents) that what Republicans really want to do is install a tiny government in to every women’s vagina and arrogate complete control over women’s sexuality and health.
