Dude, I don’t know.
I’m still processing the Plan B business. My first reaction to the unprecedented move by Health Secretary Kathleen Sebelius (with President Obama’s support (whatever that means)) in overruling the FDA which had planned to permit the morning after pill to be sold without a prescription to girls under the age of 17 was “Dude naw. Politically motivated bullshit.”
Then after discussion and reading some timelines on Twitter (Joy Reid’s (@thereidreport), in particular) my views started to change. Then after having some further discussions (with people in the below chirpstory and others), my views started to sway back to “Dude naw. Politically motivated bullshit.”
Bottom line? “Dude, I don’t know.” I’m honestly not sure. Some are blindingly pissed off about it. Others are irked about it. And still others think those who are furious about it are out of their damn minds. And yes, this is all on the left.
As such, hopefully this chirpstory will provide a placeholder until I can get an actual post together about this. In the meantime, feel free to use this as an open Plan B thread, so you can stop hijacking other threads with idiotic comments.
Hey GOP? There are no jobs in my uterus — I promise.
Last March I wrote about a bill Jan Brewer signed into law in Arizona, House Bill 2443, which makes it a felony for a doctor to perform an abortion based on the sex or race of the fetus. Apparently, Trent Franks (R-Ladyhater) decided that women and minorities nationwide were in danger of extinction, and that what we really need is a federal version of Arizona’s crazy-ass bill.
Introducing PRENDA –the Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglass Prenatal Nondiscrimination Act. At this point, I can’t decide which is more outrageous — the bill itself or the fact that these racist misogynist clowns decided to name their bill after Susan B. Anthony and Frederick fucking Douglass.
From Think Progress,
The bill seeks to somehow protect the “civil rights” of fetuses by banning physicians from performing abortions based on the fetus’s race or sex. While the woman would be exempt from prosecution, physicians who perform the procedure can be sued for damages. Continue reading

Really? can’t we all get a grip?
Look, I’m all for equality, and I’m as pro-choice as a woman can be. But this kerfuffle over Siri not providing abortion locations to iPhone 4s is a serious mountain/mole-hill situation.
Apparently, Apple has been catching flak from pro-choice advocates because Siri does not provide information (or fails to provide correct information) about abortion and other reproductive health services for women.
Some are disappointed that Siri doesn’t provide information about reproductive services while providing answers to such male-centric questions as “Where can I find Viagra?” and “Where can I get a decent blowjob?” and “Where can I look at some naked boobs?”
Alternet has a list of searches that Siri recognizes, and none of them include abortion services (and most of them seem to me to be the result of cheeky programmers): Continue reading
The county didn’t have money to prosecute criminals who beat their partners or spouses, so they dumped them on the city of Topeka. Topeka said they didn’t have the money, so they removed the portion of the law that made domestic violence illegal and left it up to the state. While it was still illegal on a state level, that put a hardship on victims and would have led to a complete lack of enforcement when the state drowned.
This was nothing but a load of BS, but there is a light at the end of the tunnel. After an angry response from thousands upon thousands of people, they have reversed this decision and the city government will again do their jobs for the citizens who depend on them.
Republicans hate women.
Demonstrating yet again that Republicans prefer waging a war on women than a war on unemployment, the House passed an anti-abortion bill that appropriately has been deemed the “Let Women Die” bill. All House Republicans plus eleven Democrats (!!!??) voted for the bill. (The bill is expected to die in the Senate, but if it doesn’t, President Obama has said he will veto it.)
The bill permits hospitals that receive federal funding to turn away women who seek an abortion even if the procedure is necessary to save the woman’s life:
The GOP-led House of Representatives is voting Thursday on a bill that Republicans say is necessary to keep taxpayer money from funding abortions but that Democrats call “savage” to women and possibly deadly.
The Protect Life Act would bar federal funding for abortions. It would also prohibit women from using tax subsidies acquired through President Obama’s health care reforms to pay for health insurance that covers abortion, except in the cases of rape, incest or risk to the mother’s health. Additionally, the bill would let health care providers refuse to perform an abortion if it violates their personal beliefs.
So if Mary McPreggers heads to her local hospital and that hospital just happens to be run by Doctor Ratched the Pro-life Forced-birth Teabilly Evangelist, the hospital would be within its right to simply push Mary out on to the street and leave her there to die, Hippocratic oath be damned.
Nancy Pelosi called the measure “just appalling” and a “savage” attempt to withhold healthcare for women. She also said, “When the Republicans vote for this bill today, they will be voting to say that women can die on the floor.”
SlutWalk is a response to a police officer who said “women should avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimized.” To defy the pattern of blaming the victim, women are organizing events where they march in provocative clothing to bring attention the the fact that it doesn’t matter what a person wears, they are not inviting sexual attacks by showing some leg or cleavage. In fact, it is no less a rape if a woman is walking naked down the street. Nothing, and I mean nothing, gives a person the right to invade another person’s body without their consent. While that should be common knowledge, SlutWalk brings attention to the attitudes shown towards victims of sexual assault – especially if they are young, pretty or not dressed like a nun.
USA Today draws several parallels between this movement and Take Back The Night, where victims of assault walk campuses and dangerous areas to bring attention the crimes, and to announce to criminals that they will not be chased off the streets in fear. The two are similar in feel, but bring two entirely different methods in accomplishing their goals. SlutWalk isn’t poking fun at sexual crimes, it is bringing context to a quote from an asshole who thinks women bring rapes on themselves by how they dress. The fact that his phrase “dressing like sluts” illustrates the very problem they are bringing attention to. I respectfully disagree with the groups who feel the word slut is inappropriate in this context.
For example, we have this:
All that AND a bag of chips
Every day on my commute north to where I work, I drive through a little burg called Pinckney. It’s sort of a redneck-y kinda place, home to a rather frightening paintball warzone that crawls with guys in cammo and face paint on the weekends. They’ve had a rash of heroin overdoses there lately. Pretty typical, ruralish Michigan town.
Except it’s also the home of Brianna Amat and Brianna isn’t typical at all.
In his 18 years at Pinckney Community High School, Jim Darga, the principal, said, the homecoming queen had always been crowned at halftime of the school’s football game. Never before, though, had she had to be summoned from the team’s locker room.
Brianna Amat, the first girl to make the Pinckney varsity football team, said her teammates had “been so accepting of me.”
And that was just the beginning of Brianna Amat’s big night.
If being named homecoming queen is a lifetime memory for a high school student, so, too, is kicking a winning field goal. For Amat, 18, they happened within an hour of each other.
Republicans are trying to climb inside your uterus again.
During the last budget showdown, the Republicans showed America its battle-plan for the War on Women: the GOP is trying like hell to defund Planned Parenthood. At the time, I wrote the following:
I have (or at least I think I have) avoided coming right out and stating that Republicans hate women. It seemed to be such a gross and unfair generalization.
But with each passing day, as they attempt to redefine “rape” and “rape victim”; as they attempt to pass legislation that permits Dr. Conscientious Objector to refuse to perform emergency abortion services and to also not require hospitals to transfer women to a facility that will provide such services (thus, quite literally, leaving women to die); as they attempt to redefine justifiable homicide such that the murder of any person threatening the life of a fetus becomes justified (does this include the murder of the mother herself? Can a scorned boyfriend or husband decide to murder his girlfriend or wife because he suspects that she intends to make a choice about her body and whether or not to carry a pregnancy to term?), it becomes more and more difficult for me to avoid stating the obvious:
I wasn’t wrong.
Republicans are at it again: This time, in a calculated political attack, they have requested financial records from Planned Parenthood Federation for America just to make sure that it isn’t violating the Hyde Amendment and using funds for abortion:
GOP Really Hates Paying Women
This was originally posted over at Zandar VS The Stupid:
The Massachusetts Republican Party is taking issue with Democrat Elizabeth Warren getting paid by Harvard University as she campaigns for the U.S. Senate seat now held by Scott Brown.
The Boston Globe reported that the GOP has asked Harvard to stop paying the law professor’s salary, suggesting that doing so gives the impression that the Ivy League institution supports her candidacy.
So what, she can’t be paid for doing her job? The article makes it clear that she has duties that she fufills, both in and out of the classroom. Mind you, they can’t show that she has violated any policies, nor have they tried to prove any wrongdoing. They have just asked that they stop paying her. The people who “grasp America’s job situation better than Dems” don’t seem to understand that she can hold a job while she campaigns. And that it’s legal. Or maybe they do and are just trying a dirty blow, already angered that she isn’t home barefoot and pregnant, dependent on her man for sustenance.
Jackass times infinity. A jackass so large that it has its own gravitational force, creating a jackass of such mass that no light or intelligence can escape its pull.
<End ZVTS Post>
So here’s some additional background on this that I have covered previously elsewhere. I am royally pissed at how the GOP treats women in general. Not only do they try to take away medical choices, they also don’t like for women to be paid the same as men for doing the exact same job. Unanimously. It seems to me that they like women knocked up and helpless, dependent on men and government programs that they resent in the first damned place. It’s a farce that in the land of freedom half the goddamned country faces discrimination with their full support.
