Kansas House GOP Passes ‘Abortion Conscience’ Bill

Kansas’s war on women marches on.

SB62 immunizes doctors and medical care facilities from liability for refusing to provide any care or prescribe any drug that might lead to abortion if those doctors or medical facilities have a moral objection to abortion or birth control:

TOPEKA, Kan. (WTW) — A bill designed to give Kansas health care providers greater legal protections if they refuse any involvement in abortion moved Wednesday toward passage in the state House, despite concerns that it could lessen access to birth control.

~snip~

Kansas already has laws that say no person or hospital can be forced to participate in abortions or sterilizations or be penalized for refusing. This year’s measure extends “conscience” protections to health care facilities other than hospitals and says providers couldn’t be required to refer patients for abortion care or to prescribe or dispense abortion-inducing drugs.

Kansas GOP Wants to Tax Women for Abortion and Lie to Them [updated]

On Monday, the Kansas House Federal and State Affairs Committee will continue discussing a bill similar to the one  the Arizona Senate passed, which allows doctors to withhold from pregnant women prenatal information because it “might lead to abortion.”  But of course, the Kansas bill is worse.

Much worse.

As with the Arizona bill, the Kansas bill prohibits malpractice suits should the woman or child develop health complications as a result of withholding prenatal information.

The bill also forces women to purchase special abortion insurance (Kansas already passed legislation that removed abortions from health insurance plans), and levies a 6.3% sales tax on women who get an abortion — including rape victims.

I know! But it gets worse.   Continue reading

Kansas Tea Party Group Compares Obama to a Skunk; Calls it 'Satire'

because he’s black and white and stinky LOLBBQ

PET SKUNK

Obama has summoned his Army of Skunks to attack defenseless white people without warning.

Get it?  Of course you do! It’s funny, that’s why!

A Kansas Tea Party group has removed from its website a comparison of President Obama to a skunk after a barrage of criticism.

The Patriot Freedom Alliance, which is based in Hutchinson, Kansas, posted a photo of a skunk on its homepage, stating it had replaced the eagle as a symbol of the president because “it is half black, half white and almost everything it does stinks.”

The image appeared on the group’s website on Saturday but was gone on Sunday, said Darrell Pope, president of the Hutchinson chapter of the NAACP. It was also not on the site Monday, the day after an article about it appeared in the Hutchinson News-Leader newspaper.

“They tried to pass it off as satire, but it was hurtful and malicious,” Pope said on Monday. He said the depiction was racist in its reference to Obama, who was born to a white mother and black father. Continue reading

Topeka Reverses Decision That Made Violence Legal

The county didn’t have money to prosecute criminals who beat their partners or spouses, so they dumped them on the city of Topeka. Topeka said they didn’t have the money, so they removed the portion of the law that made domestic violence illegal and left it up to the state. While it was still illegal on a state level, that put a hardship on victims and would have led to a complete lack of enforcement when the state drowned.

This was nothing but a load of BS, but there is a light at the end of the tunnel. After an angry response from thousands upon thousands of people, they have reversed this decision and the city government will again do their jobs for the citizens who depend on them.

I've had an abortion.

I’m not sure what I’ll be doing next in the blogosphere and I’ve been running some old posts that were particularly meaningful for me. In light of the news that Kansas has essentially managed to eliminate all abortion rights within its borders as of this Friday (though I’m very happy to see that these doctors are fighting the new regulations in court), I decided to slightly edit and re-up the following.

Over at Ta-Nehisi Coates’ place at the Atlantic, there is a lively discussion surrounding one simple statistic:

35 percent of all women of reproductive age will have had an abortion by the time they’re 45.

Now, one can argue with the efficacy of statistics that are dependent on the use of the future perfect tense (“…at current rates, more than one-third [35%] will have had…”), but it’s not like we’re looking at a possible reversal of the trend. If the folks behind the statistic, the highly regarded Guttmacher Institute, are off, they’re off by a matter of percentage points. So I feel entirely comfortable with the phrase “roughly one-third.”

Entirely comfortable, and entirely unsurprised. Abortion is one of the greatest open secrets in American society. We all know that it happens a lot — we just don’t talk about it. God forbid! We need to feel ashamed, horrified, and deeply guilty! Or, if those of us who have had abortions don’t feel that way, we at least know better than to raise the fact publicly. We know how thoroughly we’re judged before anyone even opens their mouth. (Aside from anything else, we’re admitting that we’ve had sex. Shhhh!)

But if we don’t start talking about it, if the roughly one-third of us who terminate a pregnancy in the course of our reproductive lives don’t get more honest and more bold, the GOP (and some anti-choice Democrats) will continue to do all they can to take away our right to this entirely legal surgical procedure. As Jeffrey Toobin wrote some time ago in the New Yorker: Continue reading

Pete DeGraaf (R-DIAF) Analogizes Getting Pregnant By Rape with GETTING A FLAT TIRE.

They’re both things you have to plan for, you see.

I don’t even –

Last Friday, Kansas legislators approved a ban on insurance companies offering abortion coverage as part of their general health plans. The one exception: when a woman’s life is at risk.

DeGraaf, who is in his first term and who is an associate pastor, also called for banning coverage for abortions of rape pregnancies. (Women could get around this if they purchased separate, “abortion-only policies.”)

During the House discussion there was predictably some disagreement over whether excluding rape pregnancies from coverage was perhaps the sort of callous treatment a recently violated woman shouldn’t have to deal with. Here’s DeGraaf’s response to Rep. Barbara Bollier’s challenge, as reported by the McPherson Sentinel:

Rep. Pete DeGraaf, a Mulvane Republican who supports the bill, told her: “We do need to plan ahead, don’t we, in life?”

Bollier asked him, “And so women need to plan ahead for issues that they have no control over with pregnancy?”

DeGraaf drew groans of protest from some House members when he responded, “I have a spare tire on my car.”

“I also have life insurance,” he added. “I have a lot of things that I plan ahead for.”

This was my exact written reaction when I read that nonsense: Continue reading

Kansas: Rep. Virgil Peck Suggests Shooting Illegal Immigrants from a Helicopter

Carry on my wayward son… before I shoot you.

I'd like to gun down this guy's suit. It's hurting my eye areas.

On Monday, during a House Appropriations Committee meeting to discuss feral hog population, Rep. Virgil Peck (Asshole-Tyro) said — in public, mind you — that it might be a good idea to control the illegal immigrant problem the way Kansas controls the feral hog population — by shooting them from a helicopter.

Rep. Virgil Peck, R-Tyro, said he was just joking, but that his comment did reflect frustration with the problem of illegal immigration.

Peck made his comment during a discussion by the House Appropriations Committee on state spending for controlling feral swine.

After one of the committee members talked about a program that uses hunters in helicopters to shoot wild swine, Peck suggested that may be a way to control illegal immigration.

Appropriations Chairman Marc Rhoades, R-Newton, said Peck’s comment was inappropriate.

Rhoades said he thought Peck was joking, but added, “Hopefully he won’t do it again.”

Asked about his comment, Peck was unapologetic. “I was just speaking like a southeast Kansas person,” he said.

He said most of his constituents are upset with illegal immigration and the state and federal government response.

He said he didn’t expect any further controversy over his comment. “I think it’s over,” he said.

Last month, another state legislator, Rep. Connie O’Brien, R-Tonganoxie, apologized after referring to a college student as an illegal immigrant because of her “olive complexion.”

First, I highly doubt this is the way southeast Kansans speak; tossing out jokes about genocide willy nilly.  Now, I’ve never been to Kansas, but I saw The Wizard of Oz, and I don’t remember Dorothy taking a detour to shoot some Mexicans.

Second, what is with people shooting shit from helicopters? Is this a real thing that people do? Whatever happened to grabbing a six-pack of brewskis, setting up a perch in a tree, and just hanging with your bros?  Are we really just gunning animals down from helicopters now (even if for the purposes of population control)?  That doesn’t seem right.  What do they do with the hogs after they’re all riddled with bullets?

Third, really?  This is what passes for humor among the Teabillies?

Fourth, I need a drink.  My head hurts.

Oklahoma vs. Westboro Baptist Church

something-something “where the wind comes sweeping down the plain”1

Sometimes what you need on a Monday is a little schadenfreude for the soul.  Here’s some, for ya:

Members of a Kansas church who protest at military funerals may have found themselves in the wrong town Saturday.

Shortly after finishing their protest at the funeral of Army Sgt. Jason James McCluskey of McAlester, a half-dozen protesters from Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kan., headed to their minivan, only to discover that its front and rear passenger-side tires had been slashed.

To make matters worse, as their minivan slowly hobbled away on two flat tires, with a McAlester police car following behind, the protesters were unable to find anyone in town who would repair their vehicle, according to police.

The minivan finally pulled over several blocks away in a shopping center parking lot, where AAA was called. A flatbed service truck eventually arrived and loaded up the minivan.

Assistant Police Chief Darrell Miller said the minivan was taken to Walmart for repairs.

Even before the protesters discovered their damaged tires, they faced off with a massive crowd of jeering and taunting counter-protesters at Third Street and Washington Avenue, two blocks from the First Baptist Church, where the soldier’s funeral was held.

Miller estimated that crowd to number nearly 1,000 people, and they not only drowned out the Westboro protesters with jeers, but with raucous chants of “USA, USA.”

Fred Phelps is an asshole.  The members of the Westboro Baptist Church are assholes.  They got thusly served. Continue reading
