Extra, extra, read all about it. It appears that the Republicans in the Senate DO have some sense of shame (except Tom Colburn, asshole). After the media pushback on the appalling behavior of the gentlemen and women from the red party in the Senate, said gentlepersons caved. Sort of. Their main stated reason for blocking the bill is because of their concern that we have no monies to pay for the bill (never mind that it paid for itself by closing a tax loophole on foreign corporations, which, of course, is unacceptable to the Republicans). This in tandem to blocking the bill because they wanted to make sure 6,600 families got a $23 billion tax break (Roughly $3.5 million per family. You’re welcome) makes them rank fucking hypocrites in my book. The original bill was supposed to be for $7.4 billion, then it was scaled back to $6.2 billion (the one that was blocked by the Republicans), and now it’s $4.3 billion–slightly more than half what it was originally meant to be, and 1/6th the price tag of the tax cut to the richest families in America.
Breaking breaking news: The compromised bill passed the Senate unanimously by a voice vote, as seen on the Twitter. I’m reading the twits, and they are from news organization, so they have more credibility than if they were from, say, me. Now, over to the House (who should pass it as they passed the earlier bill), and we are set. ETA: Press Secretary Robert Gibbs’ twit: Senate (finally) passes 9/11 health bill.
Good news: They passed the damn bill.
Bad news: It’s about half what it should have been.
At this point, half a loaf is definitely better than none.
UPDATE: If Benen says it’s true, then it’s true.
