Gingrich Calls Spanish the 'Language of the Ghetto'

Newt Gingrich has no love for The Browns™. A few years ago, he referred to Spanish as the language of the ghetto, and also lamented the printing of voting ballots in multiple languages:

The government should quit mandating that various documents be printed in any one of 700 languages depending on who randomly shows up” to vote, said Gingrich, who is considering seeking the Republican presidential nomination in 2008. He made the comments in a speech to the National Federation of Republican Women.

Rick Santorum is Spewing Stupid Crap About Healthcare Coverage

Throwing the sick under the bus.

Rick Santorum made some asinine statements about healthcare. Surprise!

During a town hall in Keene, New Hampshire this morning, Rick Santorum told a mother whose son survived cancer that people with pre-existing conditions should pay more for health care coverage because they make poor health care choices. While specifically exempting the woman’s child from personal blame, Santorum insisted that the sick cost more to insure and insurers should charge them higher premiums:

MOTHER: The comments I heard you make in New Hampshire, comments that you support insurance companies’ right to refuse to insure people with pre-existing conditions and that you also agreed with higher premiums for people who are sick, well my son graduated college and I pray that he gets a good job. Why is it alright for him to possibly be denied health care insurance or have to possibly pay a fee that he would not be able to afford or for a company not to hire him because he was five years old and he had cancer? …

SANTORUM: Insurance works when people who are higher risk end up having to pay more, as they should. In your case, your son obviously did nothing wrong. Obviously there are a lot of other people that increased their health risk that did do things wrong and as a result, it resulted in higher health care costs.

As a person with a pre-existing condition, I’d like to flip Rick Santorum the bird. Continue reading

The Republican Slate of Candidates is a Clown Car Fail Parade

Charles Pierce has a must read post at Esquire:

By any conventional measure, and entirely through their own fault, the Republicans have produced a field of candidates so utterly comical, so completely devoid of conventional political merit, that the field itself is a strong evidence for the elimination of the Republican party. The frontrunner is a simuloid fake. The leading contender is a horndog as surprised to discover that women did not want him as he was to discover that China had The Bomb. The leading “intellectual” thinks Barack Obama “…is about as candid and accurate as Bernie Madoff in what he tells the American people” and then, of course, decries the incivility that is drowning out the important discussion we need to have about the issues facing This Great Nation. The rest of them are concerned about zygotes, black helicopters, and whatever else is simmering in the Bachmann-Paul-Santorum stewpot. And there is Jon Huntsman, the invisible former governor of Utah, reasonably sentient human, and proven non-horndog. This isn’t a primary campaign field. It’s a condo-board election at the Hell Country Estates.

And I must highlight this paragraph because of its sheer brilliance: Continue reading

Poll Suggests Voters Think Republicans are Sabotaging the Economy

I can’t stand it, I know you planned it.

20111103-103649.jpg

There has been a lot of whispering among politicians and pundits that Republicans are purposefully thwarting President Obama’s efforts to put Americans back to work and tanking the economy, but no polling had been conducted to provide support for such a notion — until now.

Voters in Florida recently responded to the following question: “Do you think the Republicans are intentionally stalling efforts to jumpstart the economy to insure that Barack Obama is not reelected?

The results are interesting:

Who Do You Think Will Get The GOP Nomination?

Which One Will It Be?

For a long time, I’ve thought that Jon Huntsman would be a formidable challenger to President Obama. I don’t know a lot about him, but from what I’ve heard, he is someone who could appeal to the middle of the country.

Of course, he has to make it through the “TeaPrimaries” and that is the one thing that may prevent him from ever facing President Obama in the general election.

And to be honest, both he and Romney carry the religious issue around with them, so the evangelical wing of the party isn’t going to be thrilled with either of them. Republicans are pretty loyal, though and will more than likely rally around whoever is the nominee.
