President Obama Nails Republicans On Auto Bailout – Hard!

I just love when our President calls out the Republicans on their stupidity. Since the media just plays along with them, it falls on the President to do it himself. And he does it sooooo well, doesn’t he?

Half of Michigan African Americans will soon be under the rule of an Emergency Manager

With the breaking news today that Michigan Governor Rick Snyder will be installing an Emergency Manager in Detroit, this brings up an interesting point to ponder:

Based on 2010 census figures, when Detroit gets an Emergency Manager, over 49% of Michigan African Americans will have lost their representative government and will be under the rule of an Emergency Manager.

(Note: I’ve been reminded that Ecorse has an Emergency Manager as well so I have updated the chart below.)

City Population % African American # of African Americans
Benton Harbor 10,038 89.2% 8,954
Detroit 713,777 82.7% 590,294
Ecorse 9,512 46.4% 4,414
Flint 102,434 56.6% 57,978
Pontiac 59,515 52.1% 31,007
Total 692,647

[Source: U.S. Census Bureau]

Michigan had 9,883,640 residents in 2010, 14.2% of whom were African Americans for a total of 1,403,477.

I’ll leave you to do the math as a take-home exercise.

HUD to the Rescue: Evicted 101 Year-Old Woman Saved from Foreclosure

It’s not all bad news.

On Monday, Texana Hollis was evicted from her home in southwest Detroit where she had lived for sixty years because her son failed to pay the mortgage (he apparently took out a reverse mortgage to pay for repairs for the house; the money was not so used).  Court officers came to her house, removed her and left her sitting outside on the sidewalk next to her furniture and world

Fortunately for Ms. Hollis, the government — yes, the evil Freedom-sucking government — took pity on her and decided to help. A Department of House and Urban Development spokesperson announced yesterday that it would pay the property taxes and allow Ms. Hollis to return to her home:

Texana Hollis was evicted Monday and her belongings were placed outside the home where she had lived for nearly six decades. Her son Warren Hollis said he didn’t pay the bill for several years and disregarded eviction notices.

“I screwed it up good,” he told the Detroit Free Press.

HUD foreclosed on the property after Warren Hollis failed to pay property taxes to maintain a reverse mortgage taken out in 2002.

HUD spokesman Brian Sullivan told The Detroit News on Wednesday that the department would pay the taxes, remove the padlocks from the doors and let Texana Hollis return to the home.

“We were absolutely thunderstruck when we understood that a 101-year-old woman was put out of her home,” Sullivan told the Free Press.

Sullivan said the department has told family members that Hollis can return to the house as soon as she is released from Henry Ford Hospital, where she was taken after the eviction.

Warren Hollis said he and his mother were “overjoyed” at the word from HUD.

James Hoffa's Speech at the Labor Day Rally in Detroit

“Everybody here has got a vote. If we go back, we keep the eye on the prize, lets take these sons-of-bitches out and give America back to America where we belong.”

Here is a transcript of Teamsters President James Hoffa’s speech at yesterday’s Labor Day Rally in Detroit.  As a commenter at Balloon Juice noted, ”it’s a great speech for the Democrats to learn how to talk to people”:

Are there any Teamsters in the house? This is Motown, but today, this is union town. We are union, we are workers. That is the message that we send today, and that is the message that we send to America.

There is a war on workers. You see it everywhere: It is in the unemployment, it is in the Tea Party, it is in the people that fight what we believe in. And we see the war in Wisconsin where they try to take collective bargaining from our public employees. We took two senate seats back, we are taking Wisconsin back.

President Obama in Detroit on Labor Day defies the laughable myth that his "base" has deserted him

Detroit’s a special place. On Labor Day, it doesn’t just have one labor union parade.

It has two.

Yes, in Detroit both the building trades union and the AFL-CIO both held simultaneous parades to celebrate workers in general and union membership specifically. The theme of the day was “Labor and Community: We are One”. Thousands of union members walked along the streets of Detroit, streets that are showing surprising amounts of life and resurgence despite the tales of gloom and doom we read about on a daily basis. Detroit’s quiet reemergence from the desperate economic straits we’re in was reflected in the quiet dignity of the union members who walked today. In their faces you could see hope, resolve and an acknowledgment that they are stronger speaking with one voice than they could ever hope to be alone. Out of many, they are indeed one.

Caught in Another Lie: Fox News Doctors Hoffa Speech To Fabricate Call For Violence

These people are lying assholes

The wingnuts are in full smear mode, claiming that during his speech at the Detroit rally today, Teamsters President James Hoffa, Jr. advocated for violence by saying “Let’s take these son of a bitches out and give America back to America where we belong!”

And, of course, these liars pivoted from that lie to the next lie: That by failing to condemn Hoffa’s statement, President Obama is “sanctioning violence against fellow Americans.”  The wingnuts are having a field day with this because of course they are.

It’s the old “union thuggery two step,” right?  We’ve seen it before.  Dana Loesch and her Overdaddy Breitbart have already been busted for employing this very same scheme!  Remember how they trotted out Some Black Guy who had purportedly been beaten by SEIU union thugs?  Two years later, those “thugs” were found “NOT GUILTY.” (Check out Adam Shriver’s blog —  St. Louis Activist Hub — for details on those shenanigans.)

As with BlackGuyGate, HoffaGate is a pile of horse shit, but that’s not stopping the wingnut bloggers from freaking the fuck out:

President Obama's Labor Day Speech in Detroit

4 more years!

TDo you

President Obama was in top-notch form today in Detroit, Michigan speaking in front of thousands of union members at a rally sponsored by the Metropolitan Detroit AFL-CIO.  He was fired up! You really have to listen to (or watch) it to get the full effect.

Our own Eclectablog attended the speech and rally, and we hope to have video and photos posted later, but for now, here’s a transcript:

Thank you. Thank you, everybody. I can tell Ghana got you fired up. Thank you, Ghana, for that introduction. Thank you all for having me. It is good to be back in Detroit. I’m glad I was able to bring a friend — a proud daughter of the Teamsters, your Secretary of Labor, Hilda Solis, in the house.

We’re thrilled to be joined by so many other friends. I want to acknowledge, first of all, two of the finest senators in the country — Carl Levin and Debbie Stabenow are in the house. Outstanding members of the congressional delegation — John Bingham, John Conyers, Sandy Levin, Gary Peters, and Hansen Clarke.

The president of the Metropolitan Detroit Central Labor Council, our host, Saundra Williams. AFL-CIO president, Rich Trumka. President of the Michigan AFL-CIO, Mark Gaffney. And some proud sons and daughters of Michigan representing working people here and across the country — SEIU President Mary Kay Henry, Teamsters President Jimmy Hoffa, UAW President Bob King, Utility Workers President Mike Langford. We are proud of them and we’re proud of your congressional delegation who are working every single day with your state and local elected officials to create jobs and economic growth and prosperity here in Michigan and all across the country.
