Cornel West And Tavis Smiley Have Never Supported President Obama!

With Friends Like These…

As Dr. Cornel West continues his crusade to undermine our President, I keep hearing how he was once a supporter of President Obama. If he did claim to be a supporter, it was just that — a claim.

I decided to go back in time with the help of Google and find out if he ever REALLY supported Barack Obama and exactly when it was that Dr. West and his sidekick, Tavis Smiley, began their assault on our first black president.

I typed into the search bar the words “Cornel West Supports Obama” and then proceeded to weed through hundreds of hits about Cornel’s criticism of President Obama, page after page after page of links to stories about “black mascots” and “oligarchs and plutocrats” and “fear of free black men”. There were articles by conservatives and liberals, all using Cornel West to justify their own hatred and dislike for our President.

I came across one transcript from an interview he did with Amy Goodman about 2 weeks after the election where Dr. West very cautiously applauds the election of President Obama, but you can already begin to see the formulation of his strategy to undermine him.

I Live-Tweeted CNN's Coverage of Hurricane Irene

I know; it’s ridiculous.

I was bored and cranky on Friday, so I started live-tweeting CNN’s ridonkulous coverage of Hurricane Irene.

A friend on Twitter compiled the following Chirpstory, which, if I do say so myself (and I do), is pretty funny.

Oh look! I just tooted my own horn!

Toot toot!

ABL’s Helpful Hints on Racism

Stop doing racist shit. Seriously. Please.

Racism is tricky business.  Most people want to avoid being called racist.  In fact, it seems that most people would rather avoid being called racist than avoid doing racist shit.

I tend to avoid calling people racist.  I like to start with “That shit was racist.”  But, when multiple interactions result in the same racist shit being lobbed at me, I jump off the HMS That Shit Was Racist and board the USS Yo Ass is Racist.

Here’s a short video explanation:

Dude has some good points, yeah?  Still, to help navigate these muddy waters, I decided to tweeted some tips of my own.  Take a look at this Chirpstory [which may disappear because Chirpstory is a fickle bitch]:

Sometimes it really is "just a black thing"…

… and sometimes you really wouldn’t understand.

Black Thing

Black Thing

The phrase “It’s a black thing, you wouldn’t understand” is a trite quip, and I’ve never cared for it.  I do use it sometimes, but only with my dad, only in jest, and only when we are teasing my mom.

Today, however, I find myself thinking about the phrase, and thinking I may have underestimated its truth.

Let me explain.

I had jury duty today. I wasn’t jazzed about having to go, not because I didn’t want to do my civic duty, but because my summons required me to show up at the courthouse at 7-fucking-45 a.m.

7:45!

IN THE MORNING.

If you know me at all, you know that I don’t believe in “7:45 a.m.” In fact, I don’t believe in anything before 9:30 a.m.

But I digress.

The Great Unmasking: ABL Attends the South Central Tea Party Rally for The Grio [Updated!]

“Always remember that you are absolutely unique. Just like everyone else.”

So, hi there. It’s me. You may know me as ABL. Or, if you’re not into the whole brevity thing, you may know me as Angry Black Lady. I also go by stopthemadness. (Why? Who can remember. It made sense at the time.)

Some of you may just reference me as “Ugh. Her.” In any event, my name is Imani Gandy and, after four years, I am coming out of the blogging closet. It was cramped in there, and I was getting hungry.

Of course this shift in my life has startled my personalities — they are all verrah confused — and I haven’t quite figured out which one of them will reign supreme.

While they duke it out, I’m going to call myself “stopthemadness aka ABL” “ABL” over here; “ABL” over at Balloon Juice, and “Imani Gandy” over at The Grio.

Why? I don’t know. It makes sense at this time.

Moving on!

The purpose of this post is three-fold:

(1) to announce that my inaugural non-pseudonymous post — “Black reverend preaches stereotypes to mostly white ‘South Central’ Tea Partiers” — over at TheGrio.com has been published:

If Rev. Jesse Lee Peterson is going to prove to the public once and for all that the Tea Party movement isn’t racist, he’s got to work on his methods.

Libya? Lib-no? Lib-maybe?

Lib-WTF?!

I don't know much, but I know this guy looks fucking crazy.

Back in mid-March, I wrote a tome about the situation in Libya.  In it, I said the following:

The problem with the current debate regarding Obama’s actions in Libya is that people on the left are talking past each other. Lefties are conflating two debates: (1) a debate regarding whether or not it is proper for the United States to be mandated by treaties (which are the supreme law of the land and not subject to Congressional encroachment) to get involved in such critical humanitarian peacekeeping missions absent a polling of public opinion and absent authorization from Congress, and (2) a debate about the legality of what Obama is doing. The first debate is not a debate about Obama’s current actions in Libya; it’s a policy debate. It’s a debate about international law, and the United States’ place as a member of the international community and whether or not the UN is totally useless. As to the second debate, it seems to me that Obama is following the rules, at least as far as I can tell. If you want to complain about the rules, that’s cool. But that’s debate number 1. As to debate number 2, get off Obama’s back already. MIRITE?

Whelp, here we are three months later, still not talking about the United Nations Charter and still not talking about the role the United Nations should play in American foreign policy decisionmaking.

We are still arguing about whether or not Libya is JUST LIKE IRAQ!!!11one.  (It’s not. Not even a little – the 2003 land-invasion of Iraq was not sanctioned by the Security Council.)

We are still listening to the musings — This War Is Illegal! – proffered by all sorts of constitutional law experts like Michael Moore, Dennis Kucinich, and Eugene Robinson.

And finally Glenn Greenwald, of course, is still claiming that This War Is Illegal!, having not at all addressed any of the issues regarding the interplay between Articles 42 and 43 which I raised in my post in March in response to his out-of-hand dismissal of those arguments.1 (Indeed, as could have been expected, Greenwald made and then half-assedly backed away from an argument that the US along with Britain and France launched this war for oil.)

So, I figured I’d wade in (again) only to be ignored (again, I’m sure).

Challah Black Friday: The Revolution Will Not Be Televised

Black people will be in the street looking for a brighter day.

I have never been some sort of pick-in-my-afro-fist-in-the-air Negro.  I’m more dork than New Black Panther, my recent purchase of a fully automatic pellet gun, notwithstanding.1

But I like to think I’ve always been aware.  I like to think I’ve always believed in justice for all people irrespective of color or sexual orientation or religion.  I have struggled for years and years to be comfortable with who I am and what I have to say.  I’ve been blessed by FSM to be in the company of, much less raised by my parents.

I’m learning every day how to best phrase my thoughts.  Some days are better than others.  But I’m not going to stop talking.  I’m not going to stop pushing.  I’m not going to be bullied.

I remember my parents dragging me to see Gil Scott Heron when I was a kid.  I remember half-listening to my grandma tell stories about that bastard Joe McCarthy; tales about when Grandpop was blacklisted and fired from his job in the Philadelphia School District because he refused to name names.

I didn’t know what the hell Gil was talking about then.  I sure do now.

I didn’t care enough about what my grandma was talking about then, and now it’s too late.

Joan Walsh? Resent THIS.

Keep Digging

Backdrop

As some of you may know, I recently got into a little kerfuffle with Joan Walsh on the Twitterz (of all places). [The Chirpstory can be viewed on the next page of this post.]

You see, on Wednesday I wrote a rant about the looming irrelevancy of the Professional Left aka firebaggers aka Obamabashbots. It was one in a series of screeds I have written about the destructive tactics of these self-appointed leaders of the left and their firebagger minions. It was also part of a collection of screeds written by liberals of all colors, each of whom views the attack dog tactics of the Professional Left (and the resulting rancor among the Professional Left Commentariat) as damaging to not only the President, but also the country.

These screeds are penned by those who genuinely are interested in advancing liberal policies in this country, policies which will ameliorate gender inequality, extinguish racial disparities in access to healthcare, family planning services, education, raise consciousness about climate change, and beat back the plutocratic tide that threatens to drown us all. These screeds tend to be penned by bloggers who do not blog for pay and who do not blog in order to increase their advertising revenue; these are bloggers who are not attempting to leverage their seemingly self-proclaimed status as guardian of the progressive movement into television appearances on MSNBC, CNN, and Fox.

All one has to do is a simple Google search using the search terms “Joan Walsh” and “Democratic base” or “the base” and you will notice that she, like Hamsher and others, have routinely and endlessly complained that they are “hippies” being punched by Barack Obama, Joe Biden, and famously Rahm Emanuel.

Take a famous example: Fucking RetardedGate:
