Tweet of the Day – Ron Paul, Abortion, and Honest Rape™

Christ on a crouton

I’m awarding myself Tweet of the Day because I’m self-congratulatory and because you need to watch Ron Paul answer a question about his views on rape, abortion, and reproductive rights:

“If it’s an honest rape,” Paul replied, “that individual should go immediately to the emergency room, I would give them a shot of estrogen.” He claimed, however, that if a woman is “seven months pregnant” and says that she was raped, “It’s a little bit of a different story.”

Apparently there’s something called Honest Rape™ and that is something different than Dishonest Rape™:

Rectal Probe Amendment Attached to 'Mandatory Ultrasound' Bill Fails to Pass Virginia Senate

Tiny Vagina Governments? What about Tiny Anal Governments?

The Virginia senate will most likely pass SB484, a mandatory ultrasound bill that requires women to undergo a potentially medically unnecessary and physically invasive procedure ostensibly to promote “informed consent,” but, in reality, to promote the right-wing’s forced birth agenda.

Unwilling to take this affront to women’s reproductive freedom lying down, State Senator Janet Howell attached an amendment to the bill which, in essence, said: “Up Yours!”

To protest a bill that would require women to undergo an ultrasound before having an abortion, Virginia State Sen. Janet Howell (D-Reston) on Monday attached an amendment that would require men to have a rectal exam and a cardiac stress test before obtaining a prescription for erectile dysfunction medication.

Rick Santorum's Relationship with The Blahs™

Firmly secure your eyeballs in their sockets, because they’re gonna roll, and they’re gonna roll hard.

There’s currently a debate raging about whether or not Frothman actually said “black people” (I wrote about the “blah heard ’round the world” here) or whether he simply stumbled over his words and said “blah” or “bligh” people.

Tommy Christopher at Mediaite makes a strong argument that “black people” was just a slip of the tongue, and it’s an argument I’d be 100 percent inclined to believe if I gave a crap. (And I mean no disrespect to Mr. Christopher.)

Non-conservative (and non-white) folks are arguing that perhaps Santorum is a bigot of some stripe (he is), but that perhaps he should be given the benefit of the doubt here (really?)

At the end of the day, I don’t give a good gotdamn, and I’ll tell you why.

First, he waited far too long to rectify the slip of the tongue, meaning he either said “black people,” or didn’t say black people, but didn’t care enough to make a statement clarifying what he said until he’d been thoroughly mocked for it.  He should have immediately said “oops, my bad!” and that would’ve been the end of it.  The Blacks™ are a very forgiving people. (I have no statistics to back up this assertion, so take it with a grain of salt.)

Second, it’s not like Santorum is on the front lines of anti-racism and therefore warrants being afforded the benefit of the doubt.  Here’s a doozy from the Steve Benen Vault, wherein Santorum pontificates about marriage in the black community — as if he knows what he’s even talking about: Continue reading

Rick Perry Okays Abortion To Save Mother’s Life

bitterrootwire.com

Rick Perry has decided he would allow women to have abortions if their life was in danger. Isn’t that nice of him?

There are a few misconceptions about abortion that never quite go away. I’m going to start with the smaller ones and work my way up. First, let’s talk about who the pro-choice people really are. We aren’t baby murderers. We don’t rejoice in abortions, we do not cackle at the moon with glee when one is performed. We simply say that there is no blanket solution that fits every situation, which means by logical default the choice should lie with the individual. We believe our bodies belong to us, not to self-righteous jackasses like Rick Perry. The feeble and slow-witted fall for the shell game where a woman’s rights to make medical choices is trumped by personal beliefs and religious doctrine. Those who are unable to see the difference between their own moral line and a person’s right to choose for themselves are not intelligent enough to make choices for millions of women.

The other argument from pro-lifers is that “they” (meaning pro-choice) won the right for women to have abortions. “We” didn’t win squat. What happened is the courts realized they do not have jurisdiction to force a woman to carry a child against her will. When something so personal is at stake, and knowing pregnancies can come about through so many ways from comical to criminal, there is no single answer. Therefore, the only acceptable conclusion is to allow people to choose for themselves on a case by case basis. Punishing women who take advantage of their legally protected options is disgusting and a totally accurate portrait of spite and evil. The word chickenshit also comes to mind.

Herman Cain's Final Flip-Flop on Abortion [updated w/ video]

He finally got it right! There’s no more flip for him to flop!

Life begins at some point during the time it takes me to complete my creepy-ass smile.

Herman Cain really should have read his War on Women GOP Handbook before he allowed himself to be questioned on his stances on abortion. He has flip-flopped so many times it’s hard to keep track.

Luckily Think Progress already broke it down:

Abortion Is ‘Her Choice’: Over the course of one Fox News interview on Oct. 11, Cain insisted that “people shouldn’t be free to abort because if we don’t protect the sanctity of life from conception, we will also start to play God relative to life at the end of life.” But when asked whether a rape victim should have the choice, Cain said, “That’s her choice. That’s not government choice.”

Cain Still Unable: The Big “Planned Genocide” Lie

As mistermix over at Balloon Juice pointed out this morning, Herman Cain is more or less tied with Mittens for the lead right now in Iowa and very much represents the power and influence of the Tea Party contingent of the GOP.

He’s gotten this far on his cadre of lies, the most pernicious and odious being his whopper in March where he espoused the notion that Planned Parenthood exists solely to murder the black community through abortions.

When Margaret Sanger – check my history – started Planned Parenthood, the objective was to put these centers in primarily black communities so they could help kill black babies before they came into the world,” Cain said during a talk in Washington, D.C., at the Heritage Foundation, a conservative group.

“It’s planned genocide,” Cain added. He wants the U.S. Congress to yank funding for Planned Parenthood, which receives about $75 million a year to provide non-abortion health services.

Six months or so later, Bob Schieffer of Face The Nation finally decided to call him on it:

Attention, GOP: My Uterus is NOT Governmental Property or a Political Chit to Be Cashed

No icky GOP appendages allowed!

Well, well, well.  It looks like the GOP Congresspeople have way too much fucking time on their hands.  Or, too big a hole in their heads.  The economy is in the shitter; we have our war on; too many people are without jobs, houses, health insurance, or any kind of security; life, in general, is pretty shitty for way too many people.  Yet, how many jobs bills has the current GOP-controlled House passed?  None.  What have they done to help the economy?  Nothing.  What, exactly, have they done FOR the people?  Why, a big fat nothing on that as well.  And yet, and yet, and yet, they have time to pass shit like the “Let the Pregnant Women Bleed Out, Bitchez”* Bill as previously noted by my esteemed angry black overlady.

Many Democrats in the House were appalled and clearly stated their revulsion for the bill.  They called the bill misogynistic, and rightly so.  Via Washington Monthly, Republican Virginia Foxx (R-N.C.) had this rebuttal:

The Hunt is On: Operation Rescue Reveals Identities of Anonymous Abortion Doctor *and her Mother*

Hunting Humans in the Name of the Lord

Don Wright, Go Comics

Operation Rescue known stalkers and murderers of doctors and medical care providers, has uncovered the identity of a female abortion services provider who went  to great lengths to conceal her identity.

Dr. Clara Taylor, who wears a mask to avoid becoming the next Dr. Tiller, travels to dangerous parts of the country to provide abortion services to underprivileged women:

Clara Taylor, whose name has been changed to protect her identity, is a family doctor licensed to perform abortions in five states. Known as “fly-ins” or “circuit providers,” doctors like Clara travel to work in clinics that can’t find local doctors willing to do the procedure. Though there are no official figures on fly-ins, or on the overall number of physicians who do abortions, Clara estimates that there are about 100 doctors in the US who, like her, are willing to work in places other doctors simply won’t.

"Let Women Die" Bill passes the House; President Obama Will Veto if Necessary

Republicans hate women.

Demonstrating yet again that Republicans prefer waging a war on women than a war on unemployment, the House passed an anti-abortion bill that appropriately has been deemed the “Let Women Die” bill. All House Republicans plus eleven Democrats (!!!??) voted for the bill. (The bill is expected to die in the Senate, but if it doesn’t, President Obama has said he will veto it.)

The bill permits hospitals that receive federal funding to turn away women who seek an abortion even if the procedure is necessary to save the woman’s life:

The GOP-led House of Representatives is voting Thursday on a bill that Republicans say is necessary to keep taxpayer money from funding abortions but that Democrats call “savage” to women and possibly deadly.

The Protect Life Act would bar federal funding for abortions. It would also prohibit women from using tax subsidies acquired through President Obama’s health care reforms to pay for health insurance that covers abortion, except in the cases of rape, incest or risk to the mother’s health. Additionally, the bill would let health care providers refuse to perform an abortion if it violates their personal beliefs.

So if Mary McPreggers heads to her local hospital and that hospital just happens to be run by Doctor Ratched the Pro-life Forced-birth Teabilly Evangelist, the hospital would be within its right to simply push Mary out on to the street and leave her there to die, Hippocratic oath be damned.

Nancy Pelosi called the measure “just appalling” and a “savage” attempt to withhold healthcare for women. She also said, “When the Republicans vote for this bill today, they will be voting to say that women can die on the floor.”
