Burying The Needle On The White Privilege-O-Meter

No madam, you don’t get to laugh this off.

So the woman behind the awful anti-Obama bumper sticker that reads “Don’t Re-Nig 2012″ has decided that it’s not racist because she says so. It’s the other several million of you who are wrong, so LOL case closed. Forbes’ Roger Friedman investigates:

Exclusive: Paula Smith of Hinesville, Georgia has a company called Stickatude.com. And they’re selling their own version of an anti-Obama bumper sticker that reads “Don’t Re-Nig 2012.” Ms. Smith told me in a telephone conversation on Saturday afternoon that the bumper sticker has been in their inventory since June 2010, but just in the last few days it’s started selling. The price is $3. Ms. Smith insisted that  the bumper sticker is not racist. I asked her about the “N” word, for which “nig” is the shortened version. “According to the dictionary [the N word] does not mean black. It means a low down, lazy, sorry, low down person. That’s what the N word means.”

OK then, well since you’ve decided that the N-word is no longer racist, I’ve decided that you’re pretty much an awful excuse for a human being.  That was easy.

Lee Atwater: Romney can’t win in November 2012

Master political tactician Lee Atwater once said that “anyone who gets more than a 35-percent negative factor can’t win an election.”

In the 2012 Republican presidential contest, Mitt Romney is that person.

According to a new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll, 39 percent of adults in America view Romney very or somewhat negatively, compared to 28 percent who view the former Massachusetts governor very or somewhat positively.

“If his negatives are 35 percent and his positives aren’t at least 5 percent higher,” Atwater believed, “it’s politically fatal1.”

Far from a polling fluke, the NBC/WSJ survey has remained fairly consistent over the past six months. In fact, the only significant difference between this year’s results and the same poll’s findings in 2008 is that Romney is disliked more now, as the frontrunner and presumed nominee, than he was in ’08 as a third-place finisher in the GOP primary.

In January, 2008, Romney earned a 28 percent positive review from poll respondents—the exact same positivity rating recorded in this month’s poll. His negative responses, however, have jumped 7 percentage points since 2008, from 32 percent to 39 percent.

The question is, will Atwater’s axiom hold true? Is Romney’s political fate doomed?

A day in the life of the GOP. And American women.

Over on TPM, Evan McMorris-Santoro sums up the day on which the GOP decided it was time to time-travel back at least sixty years, and drag us all along with them for the trip.

Today. That day was today:

There you have it: modern women being told by Republicans that they’re not qualified to talk about their own sexual health, are dressed like “whores” and probably need birth control because they’re so slutty. And this is just in one day.

For details, click here. But hold on tight, because that time machine moves fast.

And here you were worrying that I was being overly optimistic in my earlier postTch.

Ron Paul's Missing Radio Interview – The White Supremacist One

“Is This Thing Recording? Check, Check”

I’ve heard Ron Paul described as “plain-spoken” way too many times. I guess if you define “plain spoken” as simplistic and with few words — then yes, he surely fits that definition.

Personally, I’ve never been impressed with that type of person or politician. I often wonder what they are hiding with their simplification. Is it ignorance, bias or just a desire to appeal to the populist crowd?

It is clear that many years ago, Ron Paul either authored or allowed his name to be signed on a newsletter that spewed some of the worst of the racist and anti-Semitic propaganda that was prevalent in the late 80s and 90s. To get caught up on that Ron Paul newsletter story, check out Joy Reid’s writing at The Reid Report.

But this story caught my eye and adds some context to Ron Paul’s denials on the newsletters. In 2006, Ron Paul was scheduled to appear and may have appeared on a White Supremacist radio show called The Political Cesspool. Charles Johnson describes it for us… Continue reading

The vocabulary of bad behavior: Adultery, harassment, assault, and rape.

Source: Melina Mara/The Washington Post/Getty Images

Herman Cain is imploding. If anyone’s still pretending this is a surprise, can we stop that right now? I would also be grateful if we could finally stop acting as if he was ever a serious contender for the GOP nomination. He wasn’t, and not just because he’s black. Cain was never a serious contender because he’s wildly ignorant, and borderline crazy. The GOP has a history of allowing these people (Bachmann, Perry, Santorum, Paul, Cain, etc) to toddle out onto the stage and push the boundaries of civil conversation a little farther out, squeezing out every last drop of anti-social outrage they can, and then tossing them onto history’s famous scrapheap, in favor of the one fella who has money and isn’t certifiable. In 2008, it was John McCain. In 2012, it’ll be Mitt Romney. Have we cleared that up? (No, it won’t be Gingrich. Stop that! He’s made too many Republicans mad. Much as they hate Romney, they hate Gingrich more). (No! Not Huntsman either! He’s too reasonable, and too poor. Maybe 2016, when they’re done purging the party of the crazy following what they already know will be Obama’s re-election). (Yes. That’s what’s going to happen. Can we get to the point now? Thank you).

Herman Cain’s silly White House run having served more as useful foolishness than reality, I don’t have any interest in discussing it as a political exercise. I do, however, have a very real interest in using it to continue the conversation I started at my place earlier this month about the ways in which harassment and assault shape women’s days, and to move into the vocabulary we use in conversations about sexual violence, whether they are about Herman Cain, or Jerry Sandusky, or Dominique Strauss-Kahn, or the asshole down the street.

Cain stands accused of three things:

Liberals, Take A Deep Breath…Now Let It Out, Repeat!

Democrats Sitting Pretty!

Fellow liberals — listen up. President Obama and the Democratic Party are looking great going into 2012. Don’t let the media or our opponents on both the right and the faux left discourage you, that is their goal. The media wants every election to be close, it increases their ratings and we all know that is the only thing they care about anymore. Journalism, shmournalism! And of course the Teapublicans aren’t even living in the same reality as the rest of the country, they are running around chasing phantom problems that don’t really exist and holding prayer rallies.

As I always remind myself heading into an election year, 95% or more of the American people don’t pay a damn bit of attention to what is happening in politics until the conventions and debates start up. Sure, the hard core party folks are engaged in the primaries, but we know how many people actually vote in the primaries. The real fun doesn’t start until next summer, when people will begin to pay attention. Most everything that happens until then, will never even be seen or heard by that 95% of people who are going to work, playing softball, going to the beach, camping, going for bike rides and just hanging around the porch talking about bullshit. More of these people are aware of what Snookie did in Italy than anything that is happening in Washington.

Who Do You Think Will Get The GOP Nomination?

Which One Will It Be?

For a long time, I’ve thought that Jon Huntsman would be a formidable challenger to President Obama. I don’t know a lot about him, but from what I’ve heard, he is someone who could appeal to the middle of the country.

Of course, he has to make it through the “TeaPrimaries” and that is the one thing that may prevent him from ever facing President Obama in the general election.

And to be honest, both he and Romney carry the religious issue around with them, so the evangelical wing of the party isn’t going to be thrilled with either of them. Republicans are pretty loyal, though and will more than likely rally around whoever is the nominee.

Angry Black Links – New Left

So Much Awesomeness In The New Left Blogosphere, My Head Is Spinning

Good morning, afternoon, evening, wherever you may be. Some days I wake up and there is so much good stuff in the New Left Blogosphere, I can’t contain myself. This morning was one of those mornings. Check out these great stories by the best of the best.

You absolutely have to scroll down and read this post below, if you haven’t already. It’s called “Confessions of an Obamabot” and was written by Leisa.

You should also look at the Lawrence O’Donnell clip below – when Lawrence is on, he’s on like Donkey Kong!

Joy at The Reid Report takes on Adam Green and the grifting of his mindless followers, the lies he uses to convince people to give him money are astounding. All liberals need to distance themselves from that con man and spread the word about his opportunism.

Eric Cantor is as dumb as a box of rocks, no offense to boxes of rocks everywhere! The People’s View tears up Eric Cantors latest stupidity. My favorite Eric Cantor blunder, and possibly the biggest blunder of all time in the House, was when he tried to pass a bill that would make another failed bill, the law of the land. DOH!

Smartypants has a great post about one of my heroes who died way too young, Molly Ivins. I had the chance to see her speak in person around the same time as Smartypants, she was amazing. Go read this post that brings back some of Molly’s wisdom from the past.

If you missed the President’s press conference, The Only Adult In The Room has the only adult in the room telling it like it is.

In that press conference, our very effective President reminded us all why he is President and everyone else isn’t. Steve Benen covers it like only he can do.

It’s time to take ACTION people, the forces aligned against President Obama are formidable, and they have a lot of money. I plan to give the maximum amount of $2500 to Obama 2012 this cycle to make sure our country doesn’t fall into Republican hands again, do whatever you can to help, The People’s View has the story.
