No Justice, No Peace: I Attended the Minneapolis Rally for Trayvon Martin

A week or so ago, my best friend, Kat, sent me a FB invite to the Minneapolis Trayvon Martin rally, and I immediately accepted – though it meant missing my tai chi class.  I really didn’t know what to expect as I haven’t been to a protest in a long time – and we Minnesotans are all decorous and shit.  I highly doubted things would get out of hand, but who knows when tensions are running as high as they are over the Trayvon Martin injustice?

Last night, I put on my hoodie and took pics of me looking suspicious in preparation for the rally.  I headed for my best friend’s house to hitch a ride with her and her daughter, Kitten, who was attending her first rally/protest.   Kitten’s eight, and I was worried about how the rally would be for her, but I think it’s important to get kids involved in social justice issues at a young age.

One More Win in the Fight Against the War on Women™, in Arizona

UPDATE:  BREAKING NEWS!!

Via @LbrlOkie77 on Twitter, an Oklahoma county judge struck down as unconstitutional the Oklahoma State-Sanctioned Rape aka Transvaginal Probe Law. It had been blocked temporarily, and now it’s permanently gone. Another win for #TeamUterati!

END OF UPDATE

We’re winning the fight against the War on Women™

Remember when I wrote about the two small victories in the fight against the War on Women™, one of them concerning the Right to Shame Employees as Sluts and Refuse to Pay for Their Contraception Bill in Arizona?  I said that even though Arizona Rep. Debbie Lesko’s (R-Traitortoallwomenville) new version of the bill was still invasive and odious, the fact that she was rewriting it at all because of the national outcry over it was a small win for us.

I wrote that post assuming that the bill would pass, because, you know, it’s Arizona where it seemed as if no law is too punishing of women, LGBTQ, and undocumented workers.  This bill should have sailed right through the legislature, only to be signed into law by Governor Jan Brewer (R-Crazybittertown).

It didn’t.

Let me say that again.  The slut-shaming, protect-our-religious-freedoms, give-all-the-power-to-the-employers bill didn’t pass in Arizona.

A Sliver of Good News on the War on Women™ Front: Komen Foundation in Array; AZ Anti-Choice Bill Reworked

Today has been a shitty day on the War on Women™ front, as detailed by ABL and Emily.  What with Tennessee deciding to up the intimidation of doctors who perform abortions and the women seeking abortions themselves; a Dick in Alaska suggesting that a pregnant woman seeking abortion should need the permission of the baby’s daddy in order to receive one to relieve his mind; a Proud idiot in Arizona saying that a pregnant woman seeking an abortion should have to view an abortion before having said abortion, and; anti-choice terrorists firebombing the office of Pro-Planned Parenthood Texas Senator Wendy Davis, it has been a shitty day to be the owner of a vagina.

But, it’s not all doom and gloom, Angry Black Readers.  I have two small pieces of good news in the War on Women™.  First, some news on our old nemesis, Komen for the Cure.   Remember when we banded together and caused such an outcry, Karen Handel, VP of Propagating Bullshit resigned so she could nail herself to cross?  Well, the latest news on the Komen Foundation is that two top execs have resigned and that the Foundation is in disarray.  They aren’t sure  how much they’ll be able to fundraise since their image took such a hit with the pulling funding from Planned Parenthood fiasco, and a number of local Komen affiliates have reported that they haven’t been able to reach their goals, either.  For example, Jamie Leopold, the executive director of Komen South Arizona reported that its race only raised $200,000 of the $700,000 goal.  We did this, Angry Black Readers, by uniting and raising a loud roar over the initial debacle.

The Heartbreaking Story of Trayvon Martin’s Death, Part I: Piecing Together What Actually Happned

The background story of the death of Trayvon Martin

Trayvon Martin was a 17-year old black teenager who was visiting his father, stepmother, and little brother in Sanford, Florida.  One night, he left the townhouse in the  gated community where they lived to walk to the nearby 7-11 to pick up some Skittles and Arizona Ice Tea.  It was raining out, and he was wearing a hoodie.  A normal kid, making a normal convenience store run at night to pick up a few things.  Nothing unusual about that, right? In a just world, there shouldn’t be, but in our world, there was.  Trayvon Martin is dead, and his killer is walking around free, almost a month later.

Like many people, I didn’t hear of the case when it first happened.  It wasn’t until the 911 tapes were released that the case started gaining traction in the media.  The story unfolded gradually, and with each new piece of information, the story became more and more disturbing – not to mention enraging, heartbreaking, and depressing.  It also became very complex and layered, so I’m going to try to break it down as best as I can.

As I said above, the basic story is that on February 26, Trayvon Martin went to the local 7-11 to grab some snacks.  It was nighttime and raining, and Trayvon was wearing a hoodie.  The self-appointed captain of the (gated) neighborhood  watch, George Zimmerman, spotted him, called 911, and followed Trayvon.  Zimmerman was carrying a 9mm handgun.  There was a scuffle, and Zimmerman shot and killed Trayvon.  Zimmerman claimed it was self-defense; the police claimed they couldn’t prove differently, and that was that.

A Little Humor: Drag Queens Like Chick-Fil-A, Too!

There’s a lot of heavy shit going on right now; those of us who follow politics closely can attest to that.  I don’t know about you, but I can use a good belly laugh  now and then.

I stumbled across  this video on my Twitter timeline, and I couldn’t stop laughing.   I present to you, via Jezebel, drag queens singing a parody of Wilson Phillips endorsing the homophobic Chick-fil-A.  Enjoy. Oh, NSFW!

Governor Dayton Vetoes the Minnesota “Shoot First” Bill

You will pry my gun from my cold dead fingers

Earlier this month, I wrote about the MN If It Moves in a Way I Don’t Like, I’m Going to Riddle It with Bullets bill and how it pretty much would allow you to shoot anyone you want with the claim that you felt threatened and it was self-defense.  Retreat?  Why the fuck would I do that, muthafucker?  ::Pew pew!  Pew pew!::  You would think it was a showdown at high noon the way some of the GOP congresspeople were swaggering around, fondling the butt of their guns*.

“This is our town, and we don’t want no varmint scurrying around!”  I think they imagine themselves as part of the old Wild West, shooting the baddies, and winning the heart of the fair maidens**.   “Aw, shucks.  T’weren’t nothing, Ma’am!”  Tip of the hat, and SCENE.  As I wrote at the time, it was a recipe for disaster, and I had hoped Governor Dayton (D) would veto it, but I wasn’t sure which way he’d go because guns are pretty big in MN.

Mississippi Can’t Pass the Anti-Abortion Laws Fast Enough: Two More Bills that have Passed the House

Fuck.  This anti-woman bullshit never ends.  The bills are coming so fast at us, it’s hard to keep up.  Today, I give to you two bills from Mississippi, one designated to make it harder for a woman to take the RU-486 pill, and the other strives to countermand Roe v. Wade without directly repealing it.

Let’s tackle the RU-486 pill bill first since it’s marginally less-loathsome than the other bill.  In Mississippi, a woman can take the RU-486 as telemedicine while a doctor monitors her remotely.  For example, a woman in the country may not have a pharmacy and a clinic that are near each other, so she can’t visit both in one day.  Obviously, it helps if she can take the meds while receiving instructions by phone or the internet.  Well, the Mississippi House just passed a bill that would require a doctor to be in the same room as the woman when she ingests the pill, and the bill is on its way to the Senate.  Really.  I wish I were making this up, but I’m not.  One Democrat was quoted as saying he was damn sick and tired of all these motherfucking anti-abortion bills being considered in this House!  Ok, I’m paraphrasing slightly, but it’s basically what he said*.

*Slap*! Attention, Sarah Palin. I, Minna Hong (asiangrrlMN) Challenge You to a Duel – Er, a Debate

Shut up, stupid talking lady!

So, apparently, Sarah Palin feels it’s about time for her to be yapping her mouth about whatever.  I try not to pay attention because I feel my BP shoot up and my IQ  plummet every time I hear her talk.  She had been pleasantly missing from the news for the past few months – until the HBO movie came out, the one with the luscious Julianne Moore (which I did not watch because I lived through that shit.  Why would I want to go through it again?).  Then, suddenly, BAM.  Palin was in the news again decrying the movie and saying stupid shit such as the president is black, y’all, er, not American, er, you know what I’m trying to say and wants to take us back to pre-Civil War America.  WTF?

She was rightly mocked for her statements, and as noted by my angry black overlady, #Obama2012 put together an ad using Palin’s words to raise some money.   That was a no-brainer, much like Palin herself, given that Palin practically served herself up on a platter with her inane comments.  By the way, why is this irrelevant jackhole given any airtime at all?  I know, I know, the ratings and the clicks.  Anyway, two-day circus, and scene.

Meryl Streep Introduces the Amazing SOS Hillary Clinton at Women in the World 2012

Meryl Streep is one of the premier actors of our time, and she has the Oscars to prove it.  However, if you ask her who inspires her, one of the woman she lists most likely would be Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.  In the video below, Streep introduces SOS Clinton at Women in the World 2012 and recounts the effect SOS Clinton has had worldwide.  There are brave women across the globe who wouldn’t be alive today if it weren’t for SOS Clinton.  I was touched, inspired, and proud to be a woman as I watched this video.  Women’s rights are human rights, indeed.  h/t @InlawsOutlaws on teh Twitter Machine.
