The Wisdom Of Sarah Palin On The Civil War!

If there has ever been a better example of someone being given a national platform who has no business being in the role, it is Sarah Palin. Watch this clip, if you can, or read the partial transcript (after the jump) courtesy of Steve M. at Booman’s Tribune.

Framing The Debate: POTUS, Derrick Bell, And Race

The word “racism” doesn’t mean whatever the right says it means.

The winger right has been losing the argument on race for quite some time now, culminating in 2008′s election of Barack Obama as President of the United States.  It’s driving them insane, too.  ABL talked about the idiotic Derrick Bell “hug-troversy” yesterday, and the right is gleefully pointing to young Harvard Law Review president Barack Obama speaking about diversity and Harvard faculty as proof he’s a “racist”.

This is because the right loves to reframe the definition of anything bad as “something that applies primarily to liberals.”  It goes something like this:  “We’re tired of being called racist by you people, so we’re going to define racism as ‘including race in the consideration of anything’ and therefore that means all liberals are racists.  We win.  What are you going to do about it?  You can’t deny that liberals are aware of race in differing points of view and take them into consideration through diversity and inclusiveness.  That means you’re defining people by race, and that makes you racists, Q.E.D.  Oh, and we’re done talking to you about this, because we don’t talk to racists.”

Super Tuesday – Vote Republican 2012!

In honor of today’s many GOP primaries (eleven! ten!), I thought I’d just leave this here:

For details on the foregoing, you could always read my recent post entitled The GOP rides into the sunset, but there’s nothing like a good graphic artist to make a person humble: What I took 850 words to write, graphic artist Will Amato (I’m guessing that’s him in the Batman mask on his website’s front page) accomplished in 12 lines.

Vote Republican 2012!

South Carolina: You Can’t Be a Republican if You’ve Had Premarital Sex

SCOFF.

Here’s a nugget of ridiculous for you.

The Laurens County Republican Party in South Carolina is chastening it up, requiring aspiring party members to pledge that they’ve never had premarital sex, and that they will never look at porn again.

No, seriously:

President Obama: A feminist – & really nice.

I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again: The President of these United States is a feminist. It would also appear that he is a really nice guy.

Further indication of both:

President Obama called Sandra Fluke, the Georgetown University law student who testified at a House contraception hearing. Rush Limbaugh recently had harsh words for Fluke, calling her a “slut.”

"Theirs is a land with a wall around it" – Ta-Nehisi Coates and Fridays with Billy.

If you ever read my more rambly posts, you probably know that I’m a great admirer of Ta-Nehisi Coates’s work, and am very active in the community that has grown up among his readers — and though lately I don’t have as much time to hang out there as I have done in the past, I’m still taking it all in.

Yesterday, for instance, Ta-Nehisi wrote not once but twice about the essential cruelty of America’s right-wing. In the first post, he wrote:

[An] embrace of cruelty is arguably the dominant feature of the present conservative movement. It has been repeatedly expressed in alleged “humor.” The assertion of a right of judgement over the First Lady’s physical person, for instance. Or watermelon patches on the front lawn. Or Obama waffles.  There is little distance from that kind of cruelty to aspirin between one’s legs and from aspirin between one’s legs to transvaginal probes.

In the second, he discussed Rush Limbaugh’s execrable treatment of a law student who had wanted to testify before the House of Representatives on the issue of insurance coverage for birth control, writing:

In which I contemplate a move to Mars – or: Birtherism is back.

No, really.

Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio dove head first into the birther movement on Thursday, arguing at a news conference in Phoenix that President Obama’s birth certificate is a fake and that crimes were committed in its creation.

…“It’s not over,” the sheriff said during the hour-long event. “This investigation is not over.”

The good news is that at least some members of the Sheriff’s own party, the Arizona GOP, are distancing themselves from the filth:

Cal Thomas, Retire Already: Part III

Conservative Columnist Co-opts Black History Month to Honor Republicans

As Black History Month draws to a close, world-renowned conservative columnist Cal Thomas wants to remind liberals everywhere who are too stoned to remember basic American history that the Republican Party really really really loves black people.

Or at least they did at one time.

Abraham Lincoln freed the slaves, Thomas informed us this week in his syndicated column, “Black (Liberal) History Month.” A Republican-led Congress supported the Emancipation Proclamation and the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments. Republicans in the 38th Congress passed legislation creating the “Negro Calvary,” also known as Buffalo Soldiers, in the 1860s. And Ulysses “Snowflake” Grant, a Republican, signed the Civil Rights Act of 1875, which allowed blacks access to public accommodations—until it was ruled unconstitutional by the Supreme Court.

There’s a not-so-subtly-buried trend within this unflatteringly short list of historical “moments” when Republicans fought for African Americans: they all happened a long, long time ago—before even Thomas was born.

"UTERUS SMASH!" by @ThundarKitteh

[Here's a guest post from the inimitable ThundarKitteh about Indiana Republicans' War on Women. It's informative and hilarious.  -ABLxx]

Just a reminder for all of us womenfolk in Indiana: Stop voting for Republicans, particularly the ones of the male persuasion. No, seriously…just stop. These are not the same type of Republicans for whom your parents and grandparents voted, not even close. I know I’m writing this to you in vain, as you’ve been voting straight-ticket Republican your whole life, but maybe a couple of you have actually been paying attention over the past few years.

Now, I have no idea what is wrong with these supposed “men”. You’d think that by now someone would have reminded them that they slithered out of a vagina all covered in goo, and that they need to remember to respect the vagina. But no. See, that would require thinking. And that’s bad.

The opposite is happening. Let’s rewind to the spring of 2011 here in Indiana. For some time, a literal and figurative group of pricks had been trying their damnedest to pass as many laws as they possibly could which put various bans on abortion. In fact, there were over 916 attempts1 to do so. Want me to write that number out? Nine hundred and sixteen attempts. Somebody hates women. Actually, a whole bunch of them do. But who, oh who I ask, will step forward to be the biggest douche weasel in all of Indiana? Why no other than “Representative” Eric Turner (I have no idea who he represents, and quite frankly, if you’re a woman and you voted for him on more than one occasion, my reproductive organs hate you with an unbridled passion and if I find you, I will slap you with used tampons).
