President Obama: A feminist – & really nice.

I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again: The President of these United States is a feminist. It would also appear that he is a really nice guy.

Further indication of both:

President Obama called Sandra Fluke, the Georgetown University law student who testified at a House contraception hearing. Rush Limbaugh recently had harsh words for Fluke, calling her a “slut.”

The Wing-nut Takeover Of the GOP Continues

I’ve never understood how people who call themselves Christians can belong to the Republican Party. I read the Bible many years ago and seem to remember lessons that taught me to care for my fellow humans, to show compassion, to turn the other cheek and to do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

That doesn’t exactly describe the modern Republican Party now does it?

With the craziness happening in the political world over contraception, the following story from ThinkProgress makes me think that the GOP is overcompensating in their reaction to the contraceptive issue.

Earlier this month, the nation was barraged with media coverage of the Catholic Bishops’ opposition to regulations promulgated under the Affordable Care Act protecting working women’s access to contraception. The loudness of the bishops’ complaints, which were echoed by conservative luminaries ranging from Speaker John Boehner to GOP presidential frontrunners Rick Santorum and Mitt Romney, easily could have conveyed the misimpression that churches and other religious groups are at odds with the Affordable Care Act.

No woman’s health should depend on who she is or where she works or how much money she makes. Every woman should be in control of the decisions that affect her own health. Period.

More thoughts on Catholicism and contraception

After some lengthy discussion about the Catholic Church’s dismay over the Health and Human Services Department’s ruling that insurance plans must provide free-of-charge contraceptives, a couple things have become abundantly clear.

The first is that, as is often the case with matters even tangentially sexual, certain Catholics have a special set of rules. The crux of their argument against the “contraception mandate” is that Catholic employers will be required to pay for products that frustrate the procreative force of sex, which they (some of them, anyway) consider a grave moral evil1. This line of reasoning surprised me (although it probably shouldn’t have), because Catholics seem to have very little problem indirectly subsidizing other “grave moral evils” – in many states, for example, Catholics are compelled to pay taxes that cover the costs of carrying out death sentences. Presumably, these tax-paying members of the faithful are not held accountable for the actions of the state, which, in the case of the death penalty especially, violate Catholic teaching.

Jon Walker, who has been desperately searching for material with which to bash the Obama Administration, is apparently not having much luck.  Last week, he dredged up the thoroughly-debunked “Obama killed the public option” narrative.

This week, he’s decided to gloat that a Kaiser Family Foundation poll shows that favorability for the bill has dropped from 44% to 37%.  Hooray!  Right, y’all?!

Rick Santorum is Spewing Stupid Crap About Healthcare Coverage

Throwing the sick under the bus.

 Rick Santorum made some asinine statements about healthcare. Surprise!

During a town hall in Keene, New Hampshire this morning, Rick Santorum told a mother whose son survived cancer that people with pre-existing conditions should pay more for health care coverage because they make poor health care choices. While specifically exempting the woman’s child from personal blame, Santorum insisted that the sick cost more to insure and insurers should charge them higher premiums:

MOTHER: The comments I heard you make in New Hampshire, comments that you support insurance companies’ right to refuse to insure people with pre-existing conditions and that you also agreed with higher premiums for people who are sick, well my son graduated college and I pray that he gets a good job. Why is it alright for him to possibly be denied health care insurance or have to possibly pay a fee that he would not be able to afford or for a company not to hire him because he was five years old and he had cancer? …

SANTORUM: Insurance works when people who are higher risk end up having to pay more, as they should. In your case, your son obviously did nothing wrong. Obviously there are a lot of other people that increased their health risk that did do things wrong and as a result, it resulted in higher health care costs.

As a person with a pre-existing condition, I’d like to flip Rick Santorum the bird. Continue reading →

Why Do People Gotta Lie?

There has been so much misinformation, outright lies and mischaracterizations of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act that I don’t know where to start.

It has become known as “ObamaCare”, thanks to the media, including those on the left and of course, Republican politicians.

I remember the battle for health care reform during the early 90′s when the Clintons took on the issue and failed miserably. It sucked all the oxygen out of Washington, along with the wonderful compromise that President Clinton made that brought us Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. (sarcasm)

When President Obama announced that he was going to pass a health care law early on in his presidency, I thought it was a bad idea. I couldn’t help but picture a similar outcome as the Clinton’s produced. NADA!
