Apparently we’re supposed to shed a tear for George Zimmerman. Yeah, ok:
Neighborhood Watch captain George Zimmerman, who shot and killed 17-year-old Trayvon Martin last month, sparking a national outcry, thought the killing “would all blow over,” a friend, Joe Oliver, told ABC News this morning.
“Because he was there and he knows what happened…he’s been very confident – naively – that this would all blow over,” Oliver said.

Oliver told the Today Show that Zimmerman is “just now realizing not just how big this is for him, but how big this is for the country.”
Trayvon, who resided with his mother in Miami Gardens, was visiting his father, Tracy Martin, when he was shot to death Feb. 26, 2012, in Sanford. The teen was walking from a convenience store to his father’s girlfriend’s home in The Retreat at Twin Lakes.
Zimmerman told police he shot the unarmed teen in self-defense.
Sonner said he was concerned for the safety of Zimmerman, who remains in hiding.

Leading the charge in the cavalcade of stupidity surrounding Trayvon Martin are the Breitbrats. In this case, Intrepid Blogger Dan Riehl, “found” a Facebook photo of “Trayvon Martin” which is supposed to lend credence to the wingnuts’ desperate efforts to cast Trayvon Martin as a thug.
In the photo, a young black kid is in a room somewhere throwing up middle fingers. This, of course, is damning evidence to the Breitbrats because the kid is black, he looks kind of black, and I’m pretty sure the kid is black. Also, it’s the first time in history that any kid, black or otherwise has ever mugged for a camera, so he must be up to something. He’s probably mugging the cameraman!
Sigh.
Apparently, now there’s a new witness who claims that Trayvon attacked Zimmerman:
The witness told FOX 35 in Orlando that he saw evidence of a fight between Martin and Zimmerman, which could lend credence to the gunman’s claim that he was acting in self-defence.
‘The guy on the bottom who had a red sweater on was yelling to me: “Help, help… and I told him to stop and I was calling 911,’ he said.
Zimmerman was wearing a red sweater; Martin was in a grey hoodie.
He added: ‘When I got upstairs and looked down, the guy who was on top beating up the other guy, was the one laying in the grass, and I believe he was dead at that point.’

Well, this is a new twist on victim blaming. Usually we’re busy telling women not to wear such short skirts, or not to get too drunk lest they get raped. Now, apparently, we’re telling black and Latino youth not to wear hooded sweatshirts because it might-could get you shot in the chest by some lunatic vigilante who has a problem with those “assholes” who “always get away”:
GERALDO RIVERA: Well, I have a different take, Brian, on that. I believe that George Zimmerman, the overzealous neighborhood watch captain should be investigated to the fullest extent of the law and if he is criminally liable, he should be prosecuted. But I am urging the parents of black and Latino youngsters particularly to not let their children go out wearing hoodies. I think the hoodie is as much responsible for Trayvon Martin’s death as George Zimmerman was.

A&F found itself in a bit of hot water today after The Internet found out that it was selling “nigger brown” pants in the UK. Except they weren’t really, so you can uncream your Twinkie. (I need to point out that A&F still sucks for trying to turn teenage girls into sex objects.)
I actually laughed when I clicked through to the fake Abercrombie website advertising “nigger brown” cargo pants. Maybe I’ve just hit my fuckery limit this week or something. I think I’m in some kind of waking coma.
In any event, turns out that Abercrombie doesn’t have control over the website selling ni-CLANG! brown pants, which is being run by some Chinese cats who really need to update their translator software:
When my husband and I came to Chicago from Israel so that I could go to graduate school, we had no intention of staying here permanently.
But then the second Palestinian intifada happened, and the Israeli government’s entirely irresponsible and deadly response to same, and we came to a conclusion: We no longer wanted to raise children in Israel.
At the time, we only had the one child, a round-cheeked toddler boy, but the fact of his boy-ness sharpened the point. Our choice came mostly out of a desire to educate him differently, to not sacrifice his up-bringing and our values on the altar of occupation and settlement, but there was an unavoidable sense of having also snatched our son from the jaws of war — because in Israel, of course, every 18 year old boy is drafted into the military. Girls go, too, but they don’t see combat. They don’t die.
I bring this up now because I’ve been thinking a lot about all the parents of African American boys who are holding their sons a little closer today in the wake of the horrible, heartbreaking Trayvon Martin case.
My aunt is one of those moms — white as me, but mom to a black man who was once young, a young black man who was stopped for jogging in his own neighborhood, a young black man for whom she would tremble a little whenever he went into the city.
