Thought for the Day

Desmond Tutu (image via Desmond Tutu Peace Foundation)

This keeps applying.

If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor. If an elephant has its foot on the tail of a mouse and you say that you are neutral, the mouse will not appreciate your neutrality.

Rules for Radicals, Chapter Three: A Word About Words — Angry Black Book Chat

Welcome back, Angry Black Book Chatters!

I hope you enjoyed having last weekend off as much as I did. And a special shout-out to the members of #TFY who met up last Saturday night for churrascaria in Long Beach, where we completed our plans for world domination while eating endless supplies of grilled meats.

Full of meat, plans for world domination complete, #TFY basks in the afterglow. (From L to R) @dvnix, @angryblacklady, @tanjint, @trixied13and @thescottfinley

But the work waits, and it’s time to continue our radicalization with Saul Alinsky’s Rules for Radicals. You know the drill: a chapter a week, I post a summary, you weigh in with comments about what you took away from the chapter, or how it applies to current events.

We started with the Prologue, then Chapter One: The Purpose and Chapter Two: Of Means and Ends. All caught up? Great. Radicals, activate!  Continue reading

Skinhead Sheriff Paul Babeu: Open the Danged Closet

Oops! Here we go again…

And now we know.

Rising Republican star and well-known border hawk Sheriff Paul Babeu, who’s now running for Congress in Arizona, was hit Friday night with bombshell accusations from a Mexican immigrant who said he dated the sheriff for years and was threatened with deportation if he ever told anyone about their romance.

The Phoenix New Times newspaper broke the story on its website in a piece written by veteran journalist Monica Alonzo. The accusations came complete with text messages said to be between the two men as well as compromising photos purportedly of Babeu that are reminiscent of recent sex scandals that ended the careers of Congressmen Anthony Weiner and Chris Lee.  Continue reading

A Loving Appreciation of Richard and Mildred: Meet the Couple Whose Marriage Changed America

Before the groundbreaking Supreme Court decision, they were a couple who just wanted to be married.

HBO premieres a new documentary tomorrow, appropriately enough on St. Valentine’s Day and in the middle of Black History Month, about Richard and Mildred Loving, the couple whose marriage led to the Supreme Court’s 1967 Loving v. Virginia decision that struck down bans on interracial marriage that were still in effect in 16 states.

I’m setting the DVR to record this program, and encourage everyone else to watch it as well. Meanwhile, in advance of the airing of this new documentary, here is a compendium of recent news articles and blog posts about this amazing couple and the strength they displayed in the face of rank discrimination.  Continue reading

Too Big to Fail — Attorney General Kamala Harris Addresses California Democratic Convention

The Middle Class is Too Big to Fail!

Anyone who wants to tell you that there’s no difference between the parties, that it doesn’t matter who is elected, I present the definitive refutation of that empty cliche: California Attorney General Kamala Harris.

When she walked out on the mortgage settlement negotiations last September, saying that nothing the banks had put on the table was adequate to match the damage they have caused, Californians cheered and bankers soiled themselves, because so much of the losses and the wrongdoing were concentrated in our state. Losing California from the deal made any settlement woefully incomplete.

And when the settlement was announced this week, she had won $18 Billion for Californians and increased the settlement for other states by a total of $6 Billion.

Watch her address to the California Democratic Party convention today in San Diego. This is why we fight, and this is How We Win in 2012.  Continue reading

Rules for Radicals, Chapter Two: Of Means and Ends — Angry Black Book Chat

Warning: Hands Will Get Dirty. Proceed At Your Own Risk.

Welcome back, Angry Black Book Chatters! We’ve maintained a good conversation about Saul Alinsky’s Rules for Radicals, first with the Prologue, then with Chapter One: The Purpose.

Today we’ll tackle Chapter Two: Of Means and Ends, in which Alinsky begins to lay out concrete rules for the pragmatic radical.

A bit of housekeeping: we’ll be taking next weekend off and resuming the series with Chapter Three the following week, as yours truly will be reporting to the mother ship for a weekend of re-programming by our Angry Black Overlord in the City of Angels. This break should give those of you who have intended to participate, but fallen behind on your reading, an opportunity to catch up.

And now to the rules!  Continue reading
