Georgia state representative Terry England (R-Old-McDonald) knows everything he needs to know about birthin’ babies because dadgummit, he’s delivered cows and pigs and chickens and whatnot, and it made him so darn sad when the animals didn’t make it.
Given his experience with livestock, Terry England believes women should be forced to birth their babies after 20 weeks of pregnancy. Why 20 weeks? Because he lived on a farm that’s why. And if you don’t listen to him, he might break down and cry about it.
From Crooks & Liars:
In a debate over Georgia House Bill 954, which would ban abortions after 20 weeks even if the baby is not expected to live, England recalled the time he had spent with livestock.
“Life gives us many experiences,” he explained. “I’ve had the experience of delivering calves, dead and alive — delivering pigs, dead and alive. … It breaks our hearts to see those animals not make it.”
England continued: “You know a few years ago, I had a man come to me in our store, it was when we were debating, talking about dog and hog hunting, I believe, and at that point there was some language inserted in there that dealt with chicken fighting. And the young man called me to the side and he said, ‘I want to tell you one thing.’ And y’all, this is salt of the Earth people I’m talking about, someone I would have never in a hundred years expected to tell me what he told me that day.”
“He said, ‘Mr. Terry, I want to tell you something. You tell those folks down there when they quit killing babies, they can have every chicken I’ve got.’”
Hold up, hold up. No one told us we could get some free chicken if we stopped killing babies! Where is the media on this?! Can we get some biscuits, too? Women would definitely carry unwanted pregnancies to term if we could get a free 6-piece and a couple-few biscuits. MIRITE LADIES?!
Mr. England? You drive a hard bargain, but I dig your style. You know, I’ve been losing sleep, but I made up my mind — I’m keeping my baby.
(By the way, I only like dark meat.)

“And y’all, this is salt of the Earth people I’m talking about”
Oh, sorry — I’ve been trying to cut down on salt myself.
I watched the video a couple of days ago – yes, this is the type of mentality we’re currently living with in my state. Born here, grew up here, now want to get as far away from here as I possibly can.
I’ll be attending Better Georgia’s Women’s Rally at the Gold Dome on Monday. And it may not change a thing but at least in a way my voice will be heard. Cheers to you, ABL for blogging this story. Cheers to Better Georgia, too!
Imagine the caliber of contenders this paragon defeated for his gubmint-teat elected position…
Is the collective IQ in that article about 80, or is that just my perception? I just… there are no words. None.
It’s been a few hours since I originally set eyes on this post. I’m STILL angry about it, and I don’t even live in Georgia. How DARE he compare my pregnancy, which is different in SO MANY ways to that of a cow or a pig.
I grew up on a farm. Idiots like this make me so ashamed to admit it. Why? Because he apparently didn’t learn anything AT ALL. Yes, there are complications in ALL births. But, beyond the fact that human babies are born WAY less developed than any farm animal (because prey animals are born to run), there are SO MANY other variables in human pregnancy that are overlooked in bovine or porcine (or other) pregnancies, simply because “they’re just animals. I can buy another one.” Of COURSE we felt bad when one of our animals had a stillbirth, or was injured badly due to the birth. But, I doubt he felt bad enough to look at how STRONG a mother has to be, physically, to go through the birthing process, and how WEAK our government is assuming all women are. Not just that, but our society. I’m not even going to get into how many times *this week* someone’s asked me how far along I am, and then went into how much I should go for the drugs. Did it once. Went fully natural once. Prefer natural over drugs, thanks. We’re programmed to think we’re weak and helpless, and we need our brave strong protectors to do this magnificent thing that our bodies inherently know how to do. That’s my biggest argument with creationists right there…”So, you think that we were all created the way we are on purpose, yet you think I’m weak? Please explain that to me. In real, big boy words.”
Like I said on facebook. Fuck him. He can kiss the fattest part of my pregnant ass.
The study being used by anti-abortionists to “prove” that abortion causes mental illness has been disavowed
http://in.reuters.com/article/2012/03/07/us-usa-abortion-psychiatry-idINTRE8261UD20120307
disavowed by the journal— not the nuts.
The authors of the study tripped over the very first tenet of research – correlation does not prove causation. Indeed, the link you provided points out exactly what I was thinking – the mental illness/issues preceded the abortion. Very shoddy research.
I can attest from my own life that the unintended pregnancy I terminated over 25 years ago was very much the RESULT of a depressive period in my life and that having access to abortion SAVED me from an even greater depression. I am quite certain I would have terminated MY life rather than go through with a pregnancy at that time. Or the kid would have ended up with fetal-alcohol syndrome.
Wow – wow – wow. I’m so sorry. Wow — this man is actually an elected official… Wow.
Thank you for this post — it helps to refocus my understanding on the great differences in underlying culture that have such a profound effect on our national discourse and on the composition of our national governing bodies.
Have a wonderful day.
Kind thoughts,
Reyn
I shared the “Kansas GOP Wants to Tax Women for Abortion and Lie to Them [updated]” On My Facebook about 9 hours ago before I went to bed. And because it is relevant to what is essentially the same topic underneath, I would like to repeat my opinion of; I am pro life for myself personally but I’m pro choice for other women, because I don’t believe myself to be morally superior, nor do I feel I have the right that I should impose my choices and beliefs on others.
And with that I’d like to add based on this post I am disgusted that pregnant women like myself are being compared to Animals. Not because there is anything wrong with being an animal (especially if the alternative is being Terry England, a twit who has no right to comment on birth considering he will never have to go through it personally) but because we as Women have fought hard for our rights, to vote, to work, Proven ourselves many times to be just as good if not better than men in a wide range of things, and for the pill and yes even abortions (even as a pro lifer I understand that’s cool, there’s no reason to make it illegal afterall it’s not obligatory is it? And to deny my fellow woman the option is just plain un-sisterly.) The reason being compared to an animal outrages me is that THIS MAN dares to presume that we women should have less rights than a Human (the definition of which APPARENTLY excludes the female of the species Homo Sapiens.)
