I will grant the fact that you misstated your initial protest, the way it was structured seemed to imply that you were stating that the depiction of President OBAMA was not that a racist, but a pimp.
Instead you have made it clear that depicting a person of color, who is in high social and political standing and has nothing to do with prostitution, as a pimp is not racist. Thank you for your clarification.
I do have to give you credit for the picture, I was honestly expecting you to tell me to look it up. I would like to point out, however, that depicting a white person of high social/political standing and who has little to do with prostitution doesn’t QUITE have the racial baggage of doing so with a person of color. Was the comedic part, of this non-funny cartoon, getting the entire narrative wrong? If so, kudos. But, you know, if you really wanted to get your point across, possibly drawing something more truthful, would have been very funny. A Congressional Hearing on women’s health with only religious males giving testimony doesn’t need much thought. Men who don’t have relationships with women, on a contraceptive level. Men who don’t have wives, because they’re married to God. Our country’s Surgeon General is a woman, and a doctor. Mike Lester has recently turned up on the editorial page of my local paper (in Minneapolis, about as far from Rome, Georgia as you can get). Here’s what I had to say about another recent one of his, depicting Pres. Obama as a hoodlum stealing the tires out from under a veteran in a wheelchair.
Wonder what kind of cartoon Mr. So-Concerned-About-Veterans ran when Max Cleland — an actual Vietnam War hero who lost limbs — was being slimed in Georgia by Boss Hogg Racist Asshole Saxby Chambliss and his disgusting ilk. Hope Lester and his fans will enjoy the dungheap of history, where all bigots end up.

I’m going to avoid the whole matter of what fun activities Mr. Lester might be doing in his spare time. The criminal justice system has sorted out that fine mess as well as it could. Besides that whole hot mess is really tangential to the matter of hand.
The matter at hand is the particular editorial cartoon to which I can only say: Sweet Baby Jesus On A Pogo Stick, that is one power-packed bit of toxic messaging.
Really, you had to go there? The President of the United States all decked out as Super Fly? Yikes! And then to go to several tissue-thin explanations about how this cartoon is not deeply misogynist and racist?
What kind of moron do you take me for? I can see. I can deconstruct an image. I can hear the dog-whistles being blown. I can read the tired, old, TEA Party memes and decipher them in my sleep by now.
I guess TEA Party types find it the height of humor to call the President “Obambi” Or “Barry Soetoro” and other disparaging names. What is beyond the pale though is the constant Ad Hominems other forms of heavy breathing about Obama. This image is one really nasty bit of Ad Hominem Abusive on the subject of Ms. Fluke and Mr. Obama. It is a vile bit of invective that has nothing to do with matter at hand.
That matter at hand is a woman’s right to Reproductive Health care. Birth Control, the management of if and when a woman chooses to have children is the beating heart of this discussion, or at least should be. Hello, this is about a woman’s right to control her own body. This about woman’s right to full agency as a human being. This is not about other people’s sexual hangups, frustrations, or voyeuristic impulses.
99% of women will use some sort of birth control during their reproductive lives. The management of that reproductive life is central to a woman’s health as pregnancy is dangerous to woman. Pregnancy places a woman’s health at risk. For some woman, that risk is so grave as to be unacceptable. Thus, birth control is about managing risk; full stop.
The only person who can adequately judge that risk, the risk of pregnancy, is the individual woman. She does this in accordance with her right to full sexual agency. I could give a rats ass less whether Wrong Wingers or the Catholic Bishops have a problem with that sexual agency. I sure don’t give a rat’s ass if Mr. Lester has a problem with that sexual agency.
Taking BC is neither proof of slutdom nor chastity. It is a way for a woman to control her destiny, to space out the children she has, or to have no children at all. It’s unfortunate that Mr. Lester has a problem with the fact that women have sex for reasons other than procreation, or that they want to choose when that procreation happens, if at all; but there you are.
News flash Mr. Lester, human beings have been having sex for pleasure since we climbed down from the trees. The availability of reliable, convenient forms of BC have finally liberated men and women to explore the pleasure of sex to its fullest extent. Granted many on the right are having a full blown freak-out about this; but there you are, again.
Look, no one is forcing you, Mr. Lester, or more exactly your wife, to use that evil, deplorable, slutty Birth Control; now available without co-pay. It’s a prescribed medication, get it or don’t get it.
It is a medication, it performs a task. It is taken on a schedule to preform a task. People take scheduled drugs every day to treat high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels, infection, etc, etc, etc. This has exactly nothing to do with their moral compass. One does not take an cholesterol blocker because they plan to go on a Pizza binge.
So too a women does not go on BC because she plans to indulge in promiscuous sex. A women takes BC, for the most part, because when she does have consensual sex, for pleasure, which is her right as full, autonomous human, she will not end up pregnant. The only people who have a problem with this notion are those who believe that women should be punished for their sexual agency. That would be bigoted, misogynist, mouth-breathing “cartoonists” who put out garbage like Mr. Lester.
