Hey! Women of Virginia! I bet you didn’t realize that on this Valentine’s Day, the GOP in your state have planned a special Valentine’s prezzie juuuuuuust for you. It comes in the form of two very restrictive anti-abortion bills, and because they have a supermajority in the House, both bills passed in the House today!
The first bill says that a person is a person the minute a sperm and an egg collide, like two ships in the night. In other words, a personhood bill, even though they don’t call it that. The same kind of bill that, when put to the voters of Mississippi, it was soundly defeated. It passed the House in VA, 66-32.
The second bill is the lovely, “Hey, we’re going to do a completely meaningless procedure before you’re allowed to have an abortion and stick something up your vagina at the same time” bill. It passed the House in VA, 63-36.
This is what jackhole Todd Gilbert (R – Asshatteryville) said about abortion:
We hear the same song over there. The very tragic human notes that are often touched upon involve extreme examples [he said]. But in the vast majority of these cases, these are matters of lifestyle convenience.
Truer words have never been spoken! I, myself, have had an abortion or three because swimming suit season was upon me and I didn’t want to ruin my girlish figure by being preggers! Amirite, ladies?
I don’t believe every abortion is tragic, but most women certainly aren’t going around blithely making the decision to abort between bikini waxes. And, here again, we have another example of an asshole man spewing out mindless bullshit on a topic about which he can never have any personal knowledge. Ever.
Someone must have told good old boy Todd that his statement was not going over very well with the public because as I’m writing this post, he issued a statement regarding the above comment. The statement said:
I recognize that few women undergo the procedure lightly. It leave scars, both mental and physical, that can last a lifetime. I regret my comments earlier…were insensitive to reality.
Well, that’s nice, Todd, though I notice you didn’t actually apologize, but does this mean you’re changing your vote? No? Then you can take your non-apology and shove it where the sun don’t shine.
The Democrats fought as hard as they could, but to no avail. Here’s the kicker. The personhood bill had always died in the Senate in the past, but thanks to the GOP taking over effectively taking back control of the VA Senate during the last election, it will probably pass this time around. Governor McDonnell (R) has said he will sign the invasive probe bill if it lands on his desk, and he hasn’t commented yet on the personhood bill.
The Republicans want to take away women’s right to choose, and bills like these are incremental steps to a de facto ban on abortion and in many cases, pave the path to making abortion a crime. Yes, this example is in Virginia, but as we here at ABLC have chronicled, this kind of bullshit is spreading across the land.
This is why we fight. This is why voting matters. Both sides are not the fucking same. Anyone who thinks otherwise is no ally of mine.

The GOP: making sex in any form enjoyable since 1980
Thanks for the culture wars, Reagan, you old dead fucker you
I think you mean not enjoyable, Arrogant Demon.
dohhhhhh!!!!!!
haha
*DED*
damn. this shit just got very serious. i cannot believe that someone would mandate an invasive ultrasound, just to prove a point. but they did. not to mention the stupidity behind “protecting” life from its conception. it is unrealistic fairy tale shit.
This is why we fight. This is why voting matters. Both sides are not the fucking same. Anyone who thinks otherwise is no ally of mine.
i want to scream it from the top of a fucking mountain.
big mahalo for this. grr.
I believe this means that, if this bill becomes actual law, fertility clinics in Virginia are teh fuxx0red.
And of course, as always, those most affected by this bill will be the ones who are financially vulnerable. Everyone else will drive to DC, PA, or NC. So just like the planned parenthood witch hunt – all they’re doing is hurting the poor. Anyone with a few bucks in the bank will do what they have to do.
I have freaking HAD IT with men deciding what we women can do with our bodies! If I could I would make a “New Rule” that stated that no man has the right to tell a woman what to do with her body. I would make a slight exception for a man who is married to/partnered with a woman to give his input, but even then, the final word is HERS.
Off to the corner now to ARGLE BLARGLE SPIT SPEW and FUME!
Okay, Virginia. That’s it. You’re gonna make me go all West Coast, aren’t you? Guess I’ll start packing for a move to Washington to get as far from you as possible. At least they know what’s up.
Is there really a place called Asshatteryville ? I love it. I propose we take all the repugs – probably all male anyway- make them strip from the waist down, bend over, and open wide, insert one Louisville slugger as hard as you can and manipulate it around for 25-30 minutes-about the same amount of time this vaginal probe is in a woman, with no lubricant of any kind and let then see how they like it. We can tell them it is a MANdatory procedure before they can get Viagra.
You know, they already have all this information in medical books and other studies which these technicians and doctors learn from. One 6 week old fetus is at the same stage of any other 6 week old fetus unless it has died in utero or is severely defective. So for the party that has cut medical funding to pregnant woman, food programs for poor and is always bitching about medical costs, they think nothing about ordering up medical procedures and these politicians don’t even have a license to practice medicine, which used to be illegal, but it would not be the first time they did something illegal. And since this is not really a medically ordered test by a doctor, if the woman has medical insurance, they will not cover the costs and if she is poor, Medicaid will not pay for this as it is unnecessary and she will be stuck with a test for thousands of dollars and with the way it is now you have to pay many of these cost up front-same with people with no insurance going to the hospital to have the baby they could not abort due to republican bullshit, they have to pay 50% of the cost before they are admitted to the hospital and the other half before going home with the baby you didn’t want to begin with. I saw give them the kid and let them sell it to pay for it birth. And if the women forced to have this procedure cannot afford it, will they then refuse her the legal-still-abortion or make her wait until she has the money and then it will be too late. These politicians should have to have their paychecks rescinded and transferred to the clinics providing these forced tests.
Last August NARAL and other womens groups got this bill stopped in Texas, unfortunately, they pushed it through a few weeks ago and in Texas, Rick Perry made it so that the victim had to pay for this test.
We need laws in this country that make it illegal for men to write the laws that are discriminatory, misogynistic, humiliating toward women when it comes to owning the uterus’s in their own body and the control of their own reproduction. Men cannot have babies and therefore have no business making laws up for only slightly more than one half of the population If God wanted men to rule over that part of a womans body, he would have put them into mens bodies instead. Until the day comes that a biological man gets pregnant, carries it to term and gives birth to it, he can shut the hell up.
While I agree with you that this is wrong in far too many ways, telling me to stand on the sidelines instead of being an ally isn’t a good idea. Separatism of any kind never is. Such things are sometimes satisfying in the near term, while rarely being useful over time.
Your aims are good, and right, though your means and tone…could use a bit of work.
So what’s your point? Are you disagreeing with the premise that both parties are Not THE SAME? F that..you flunk reading comprehension and belong with the misogynists in the GOP.
Ladies, to get out of this one, y’all need to start a church with a doctrine what says you can’t get probed by machines, then start a company, then hire each other.
“This is why we fight. This is why voting matters. Both sides are not the fucking same. Anyone who thinks otherwise is no ally of mine.”
YES!!
BTW I wonder if there are any fertility clinics in VA that will have to close up shop if the Gov decides to sign the “Personhood Bill”. I never hear the Republicans bemoan all the “persons” that are created and frozen and often disposed of as a byproduct of the in vitro fertilization process.
Women of Virginia, lock your legs at the knees. Don’t let them near your vagina, or better yet insist that they bring you a colon cancer screening scan or a HPV free note from the doctor before you open your legs for them. Women have the poweer, use them.
So for all the Emo-Prog professional left types who scream “a pox upon both your house” I’d like to see how they explain how to counteract this bull without voting? You think the VA could pull off this crap if Americans didn’t sit out what of the 2010 elections? And what the hell does going after women’s bodies have to do with jobs?
Your choice is crystal clear America – follow Obama and the Democrats into the 21st century or let GOP drag America back in the 17th century.
A lot of them are white males of means (Greenwald, Ed Schultz, Sirota, etc.) THEIR privileges and rights won’t be affected — Greenwald doesn’t even live in the country most of the time — so why should they care? Besides, what does some woman’s privates have to do with the REAL priority of giving the wannbe keyboard warriors of Leftieland a RIGHTEOUSGASM OF JUSTICE!!! That’s the most important thing in the world!
This is for the people who keep saying “voting doesn’t matter, they’re all the same”
Really, when was the last time wanted a Democrat wanted to shove an object up your uterus, well, unwillingly and with the law?
I live here in Virginia, have so all my life, and to know that women may have to be forced to have this backward-assed General Assembly in her doctor’s office is a travesty. It is a “life” when the woman determines it so; no woman needs the guv’ment to define it for them (regardless of the bullshit reasoning they’re trying to drum up) and she certainly doesn’t need a required ultrasound to prolong an already stressful situation. My goodness, even Mississippi left it alone! In many cases, the decision to abort is not easy (yes, I know – especially when you have a protestor walking up to you to give you a damned brochure and trying to talk you out of it as you walk in the builiding, but I digress…), but it was my decision and when it was done, I was simply relieved. Almost twenty years later, I still am. I cannot imagine the additional frustation and pain to come with a required ultrasound; no woman should be forced to endure such political measures in a major personal issue.
What stipulations should they impose on geriatric men rushing to the doctor’s office for a device or pill to get his dick up – with my fucking tax dollars? That gets my blood boiling as I think about it. The guvment here’s pushing a fine line with this personhood shit. If they keep it up, we may indeed run the risk of women and hangers in the bathroom again.
p.s. I mentioned Mississippi simply because it’s known to be more conservative than Virginia…
They’re psycopaths. They relished their powers over others whom they perceived as weak and defenseless, namely, minorities and women.
“Psycopaths… are hard-wired to lie ,kill, injure and generally inflict great sufferings on other humans without feeling any remorse…”.
