When men can get pregnant, I’ll be interested in their opinions about birth control.
My love affair with Rachel Maddow runs hot/cold. Precisely because she’s so smart and incisive, when she’s wrong it is more infuriating than when a dumber, less attentive pundit swings and misses yet again.
But all the elderly white men, most of them Catholics, who are hyping “Obama’s War on Catholicism” beyond any reasonable understanding of the actual American electorate, and the actual relationship between Catholics and their own leadership, need to have a seat and watch Rachel.
Yes, Chris Matthews, I’m looking at you. And you, Lawrence O’Donnell, and you, Mark Shields, and you, E.J. Dionne.

Any questions?
Oh, and you should probably read this. Warning: words at link written by vagina-owner. Proceed at your own risk!
New rule: any TV pundit who hosts an all-male panel to talk about how American voters feel about contraception has already failed his audience.

I was just thinking that if I had heard that someone was proposing legislation that affected farmers, it would not be my first instinct to ask city folk about it. I might turn to, I don’t know: farmers?
But then I’m an old reporter, the kind that used to use skinny notebooks. Maybe the pundits know better than me.
I will never understand straight or bisexual men who don’t think contraception is vitally important. Hey guys, like sex? Don’t want a kid every time you have sex? Then contraception is for you. And because of that, you have a responsibility to support its availability for the women you could conceive a child with, but don’t want to right now.
Hey ABL,
Long time reader, first time commenter. I was thinking this exact same thing as I watched msnbc last night. This ginned up controversy only serves to create yet another thing bash President Obama with. With the good unemployment numbers that came out last Friday, voters have started to see the economy as a positive for him. This eats into the Republican’s main talking point against him. So what do they do? Make-up the ” Obama’s war on religion” meme. It came out nowhere this weekend . A month after the adminstration’s decision was made. And, all of these old liberal white male pundits fell for it.
Keep up the great work!
OK. SO I WASN’T WRONG ON THE LAWRENCE O’DONNEL SEGMENT WITH MARK SHIELDS. I WAS ACTUALLY STARTING TO QUESTION MY READING OF THAT SEGMENT. THANK YOU ABL. I TWEETED HIM IN ALL CAPS, LIKE I AM HERE. AND I COMMENTED ON HIS FB PAGE HOW AMAZINGLY OFF THE MARK HE WAS IN THAT SEGMENT, I’M BEING TOO KIND RIGHT NOW. I WAS ACTUALLY QUITE RUDE. BUT NEEDED TO BE. HE CLAIMS TO BE A SOCIALIST. I WAS SO ANGRY. I TWEETED THE FACT THAT HOW DARE TWO HETERO MEN DISCUSS THE ISSUES SO IMPORTANTLY PERTAINING TO WOMEN. OOOOOOH! I WAS ANGRY. BUT I’M GLAD TO READ THAT MY UNDERSTANDING TO THE SEGMENT AGREES WITH YOURS ABL.
Dang, Maddow knocked it out of the park!
We do all understand that the entier GOP lineup is kissing RW Christo-fascist arse from “Biblical Capitalism – freedom, faith and free markets” to the war on women, the war on gays, the war on minorities, the war on workers, the war on the poor, the war on science, the war on education, the war on the elderly…?
Riiiight?

People have got a LOT of catching up to do.
Chris Matthews is pretty transparent in his desire to manufacture the “horse race” narrative at every opportunity. It’s old-school punditry that is fast becoming an inside joke among the journos and junkies on the interwebs. Matthews has become the narrative, a desperate “media” that senses apathy from the right begging for attention and interest.
Nothing makes me angrier than a man telling me what to do with my womb.
Like you Allan I get really mad at Rachel when she gets it wrong.
But after seeing this segment last night, it was so spot on that I just want to post it everywhere in BOLD CAPS. Especially to places where older white males hang out. If only that were possible.
Bill Donohue et al.’s talk of “waking a sleeping giant” and of bazillions of Catholics banding together to fight the Obama Administration on this contraception issue makes me LOL. The first thing that comes to my mind when I hear Church leaders and/or pundits say this is the punchline from that old Lone-Ranger-Tonto joke: “What you mean ‘we,’ Paleface?”
Ash Can, always remember the wisdom of Kathy Griffin vis a vis Donohue — something like “The Catholic League is really just one guy with a computer.”
I don’t know a single Catholic of child-bearing age who doesn’t use some birth control. I didn’t know any Catholic that is my age who didn’t use birth control. This blows my mind….Hell 28 states have the same rules, so it is just a made up problem much like the “War on Christmas”……
Sorry, gotta fix something for you:
When cis men can get pregnant, I’ll be interested in their opinions about birth control.
Keep up the feedback to the msnbc catholic crew. Tweety was much more reasonable this morning.
“waking a sleeping giant”
I think this may be true but not in the way he means. This ginned up controversy on the heels of the Komen fiasco may have the female sector of the electorate really paying attention to the war on women’s healthcare that has been having trouble breaking through as a BFD.
Nellcote, I think the Komen fiasco also got the attention of a lot of men who lost loved ones to breast cancer and are as horrified by women at the politicization of female healthcare. Despite what some of our devout Catholic visitors have said, contraception IS healthcare — certainly more vital than Viagra for the preservation of health. And as far as I know, nobody uses boner meds to control other chronic hormonally-based conditions as they do BC pills.
In spite of being a fan of his show, it frustrated me to hear Lawrence O’Donnell take the place. And use the guy from McGovern and Dukakis’ campaigns. You were dealing with a much more conservative electorate on thses issues in the 70′s and 80′s, so it doesn’t apply.
The more I think about this issue, the angrier I get. I’m supposed to sympathize with them? Really? I’m supposed to pity these assholes who if they had it their way would do the following:
A) Defund Planned Parenthood
B) Make abortion illegal again
C) Ban contraceptive use again
and all of this because of their so called religious beliefs tell them women having any control of their bodies and sexuality is wrong.
Fuck. That. Shit.
Fuck all of the religious organizations who over the past 30+ years have been trying to make their doctrine into law in this country. Fuck them for showing no empathy for women who might need an abortion in order to save her life.
All these years of trying to shove their beliefs down our throats through law and the minute the government stands up and say, “Uh no you can’t do that with public funds” they start whining like it is THEM who have the government in their genitals for all these decades? UGH!!!
Here’s an idea: Want to be able to act in good conscience to your faith? Want to practice your religious views however you want? Then get the fuck out of politics ass bags! Just give back that money the government gave you for the hospitals and such and get the fuck out of DC. The gubment can’t touch a private organization.
Deal?
BOO YA.
It’s way past time for the vaginati to STFU.
So its now Obama versus the Uterus Police in the GOP, and all the good liberals who aren’t name Rachel Maddow are now cowering under their desks.
I’ve only met personally one woman in life who has never use birth control and that’s my fiancee. Every other woman, even the married ones, would rather have a little control over when and where they start popping out a litter.
Here’s my opinion, as a man, on abortion and birth control – until I get a functioning vagina, its not really my concern nor my place to dictate what people with functioning vaginas should do with them.
Seeing as most women, even Catholics and Evangelicals, use the pill, I find it hard to believe the GOP getting in traction by alienating 50% of the population. Then again, when Uncle Luke, of all people, points out correctly that the entire GOP slate are a barbershop quarter of bigotry, I actually don’t see this as surprising.
Again, if you actually care about this country getting past the 80′s in terms of social progress and economic justice, your only choice is Obama in 2012. The GOP is now a party of billionaires and mouth foaming bigots.
Even as far back as the early-mid 80s, the only Catholic girls I knew (read: most of the girls I knew) who didn’t use contraception were the ones who ended up getting abortions.
Rachel totally smacked down, without naming him, Chris Matthews.
I’ve been absolutely shocked by pundits actually thinking that a war on birth control is one that is anyway a winner for the Republicans. It’s absolutely insane.
Have these people been lost in a time machine? It’s 2012 not 1952.
I find it funny that Joe “dead intern in my office” Scarborough & Chris Matthews are tsk tsking the President over something that is already commin in over half the states.
The Catholic Church? Really?
They didnt have a problem with all the little boy rape going on all around the planet, hell, ole Johnny Ratz, before becoming Pope, was the main dude hiding all that shit, even in his native Germany, where like 40-100K boy were rapes, and thats a low estimate. The same people who burn condoms in Africa when they were sent to deal with the AIDS crisis there. They’re a fucking roadblock in condom use in Africa. Million are dying there for their “moral convictions”.
And they want their “moral convictions” to supersede law. And all these thudfucks want to hitch their wagon to a battle they cannot win. The whole Komen incident took that organization down. and made its brand into shit.
Sen Thune and his “awaken a sleeping giant” comment was special. He and the Crying Orange Boner want to hitch on to this losing argument to piss off whatever women left on their side.
As a man, I like contraception, you know why, I like sex without worrying about making no god damn babies, you know, its just a thought.
When I’m lucky enough to get someone to punch a ticket on the “baloney pony”, its good that we’re all strapped in, so no “accidents” happen
You call it “baloney pony”?
It has many manes, it’s very versatile
Arrogant Demon – baloney pony! LOL!!
I love the way you think!!
O’Donnell had a constitutional lawyer on last night discussing this issue that made him change his position on the spot. Now THAT was must-see TV. I’ve been so pissed at the misrepresentation of the facts on MSNBC that I wanted to throw something at the television. Last night, I had to stand and applaude. The video is on The Last Word website.
When the Catholic church comes clean and finally get down to cleaning out the Holy See in their participation of war crimes and pederasty, then they can pop smack regarding having their conscience being attacked. Egan, Donahue and the rest of these robed freakoids needs to shut up and be glad that SNAP doesn’t have a hit squad after them.
