Melissa Harris-Perry on The Colbert Report

“Experiencing racism tends to be a  worse experience than actually  talking about racism or race… Talking always brings us closer to understanding.”

Melissa Harris-Perry handled Stephen’s antics very well. Take a look:

  1. My God! Stephen’s talking about Blah women in America. It’s YOU, ABL, he’s talking about you. When’s he going to start talking about Black people?

  2. Just watched it all the way through. She rocked the interview and hit the fuzzy nostalgia crowd right in the nose. The ONLY people truly nostalgic for the good old days are white people, mostly white men. Any time I get too nostalgic all I have to remember is the woman telling me when I was about 6 years old that I could never be a doctor because only men are doctors, or the summer camp director who excitedly announced a trip to Fenway Park – for the boys – because “everyone knows girls don’t like baseball”. Good old days, my ass.

  3. I really loved seeing her on this show, hearing these things get talked about on a widely-watched program. Obviously his audience skews left but I’d bet there’s a good amount of clueless white liberal “yay we’re post-racial and we don’t need feminism anymore” types who would benefit from listening to MHP, and dare I hope, from reading her book – which I highly recommend.

Also? I almost feel like a bad feminist for this because you know, but…damn, she is a beautiful woman. I mean, she’s brilliant and witty and awesome in many ways, but yeah…also stunning :)

  4. I think I’m alone in this, but while I thought Prof. Harris-Perry was terrific, Colbert’s boorish character really annoyed me. Usually the wink-and-nod is very clear, but here he was just being obnoxious.

  5. So are you going to change the name of this blog to the Sapphire Chronicles? :)

  6. My hubby is smitten with her. And I am ok about it! :)

  7. I wish she could take Ed’s slot. I bet she’d be able to compete with The No Spin Zone.
