He just has a racist way of showing it.
I ask of Rick Santorum and his supporters only two things: One, please stop saying “Santorum Surges From Behind“; two, please stop saying “Santorum Surges From Behind.”
Oh, and by the way? Mr. Santorum? Not all black people are on welfare or food stamps. Not all black people are on drugs. Not all black people are in prison. So when you say stuff like –
“I don’t want to make black people’s lives better by giving them somebody else’s money… I want to give them the opportunity to go out and earn the money and provide for themselves and their families.”
– it makes me want to slap you upside the head a little.
If you would like to have an honest discussion about the policies in this country and how they may disproportionately impact black people or other minorities, don’t start it with the old racist trope that black people in this country are a bunch of lazy-ass moochers. And if you really want to “make black people’s lives better” (and pardon me if I take that assertion with a block of salt), you might try talking to some.
Just a suggestion.
UPDATE: DougJ at Balloon Juice weighs in on the matter:
Only about a third of welfare recipients are African-American. That’s the reality. (And it’s also worth noting that African-Americans get a disproportionately low proportion of Social Security pay-outs, because of lower life expectancies and average wages.)
I hate that American politics has been dominated by the specter of imaginary strapping young bucks buying T-bone steaks with their welfare checks. It’s what I hate the very most about American politics, because it’s so incredibly toxic in so many ways: it’s divisive and hateful, it turns the middle-class against itself, it makes a rational discussion of the role of government impossible, it holds us back as a society more than any other myth I can think of.
So you’ll have to excuse me for not wanting to participate in all the navel-gazing about what liberals “should” think about Ron Paul. The guy has flirted with strapping young buck racism (as well as anti-Semitism) since forever, not just via his (ghostwritten) newsletter but also in his (presumably not entirely ghostwritten) book. His economic ideas would — in my opinion — probably devastate the American middle class.
For a liberal like me, who is primarily interested in the well-being of the American middle-class and in providing opportunity for everyone in the United States, regardless of race/ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religion etc., I just don’t see why I should be “challenged” by Ron Paul. I understand that if you’re a liberal who is primarily interested in civil liberties and a less bellicose foreign policy, then you might be conflicted about Paul. But to me, he’s just another racist asshole who wants to fuck the American middle-class.

Don’t slap Old Frothy “…upside the head” (or anywhere else).
Use a 5-iron or a Louisville Slugger. A 2″ x 4″ will also suffice.
No half-measures!
Talk to black people? OMG! Of COURSE he doesn’t want to talk to black people because
1. He might get blackcooties
and
2. He might learn that only about a third of people on welfare are black.
No, I mean it. That picture has got to go.
THE NIGHTMARES WON’T END IF YOU DON’T STOP USING THAT PICTURE.
ahem.
I must agree. He looks like he’s attempting to expel himself.
Seriously. He looks like his face is about to melt off because he opened the Ark of the Covenant.
Oh, god. I agree. He looks like something Tim Burton would nightmare up!
Is Dan Savage making Santorum in that picture there?
Seriously man, they’re going to do every racist thing except saying the n-word, and even thats up for grabs
Once again you hit it out of the park. The #GOP is the party of divisiveness, bigotry, hate, stupidity, and ignorance. Nothing reflect this more than the liars, bigots, demagogues, and ignoramuses, that make up the republican field of candidates, and even more so the people who vote for them.
And don’t forget fear — they run around trying to scare everybody into voting for them, but it’s actually they who are scared. Scared of black people and brown people and women people and religions that don’t resemble theirs, and….well, I can go on and on.
The thought of one of these crazies being President just twists my stomach into knots.
Speaking of welfare — will Santorum speak out against ethanol subsidies?
To be fair — neither did Obama. But farm subsidies are a perfect example of welfare for people who aren’t what we’re supposed to equate with “welfare! (wink wink, nudge nudge, say no more!)”
I don’t know if you’ve heard, but our do-nothing Congress has been busy not renewing ethanol subsidies. And they’ve expired just in time for the Iowa caucuses too! Looks like their influence isn’t what it used to be.
As someone who has worked since my early teens, I invite Ricky to feast on a bag of extra salted.
