Each of Gingrich’s claims about food stamps is so ridiculous — especially for a self-styled policy wonk — that we wondered whether he was really intending to be serious. (By publication time, we did not receive answers to several queries made to his press staff.) But the transcript makes it sound like he wasn’t joking, so we’ll assume he wasn’t. For being so ridiculously wrong in so many ways, we rate his statement Pants on Fire.
But you know what? Republicans don’t care about truth. They just hate President Obama (and anyone who looks like him). And that includes portraying “poor people” as the singular cause of all our economic woes.
“Really poor children in really poor neighborhoods have no habits of working and have nobody around them who works,” the former House speaker said at a campaign event at the Nationwide Insurance offices. “So they literally have no habit of showing up on Monday. They have no habit of staying all day. They have no habit of ‘I do this and you give me cash,’ unless it’s illegal.”
Gingrich lately has been unspooling an urban policy, beginning with his comments at Harvard University last month when he discussed child labor laws. “It is tragic what we do in the poorest neighborhoods,” Gingrich said then, “entrapping children in, first of all, child laws, which are truly stupid.”
Children in poor neighborhoods, he said, should be allowed to serve as janitors in their schools to earn money and develop a connection to the school.
Really? Newt Gingrich, the first Speaker of the House to be brought up on ethics charges before the full House of Representatives, who faced 84 ethics violations, and was made to pay a $300,000 fine? This is the man lecturing anyone on “work ethics”? I love it. Newt Gingrich’s full title is “Disgraced Former Speaker” for a reason.
Please let this billowing blowhard win the nomination. I’d love to see Barack Obama win Kentucky…and every other state out there.
Who needs terrorists? Stuff some C4 in Newt Gingrich’s pockets. All he needs to do to detonate it is to start talking and his pants will do the job.

Poor, delusional, out of touch, factually challenged Newt! I’ve been a retired GA high school teacher since 2009, and I know for a fact that poor kids work. As soon as it became legal for them to do so, most of my kids from lower socioeconomic levels got jobs at fast food restaurants, grocery stores, and nursing homes. I oftentimes wished they hadn’t because it interfered with their school work, but I understood their need to begin working as soon as they legally could. Newt Gingrich is an embarrassment because he and millions of republicans think that he is one of the “smartest” members of the Republican Party. It’s too bad that they’re easily impressed by someone who says things in an authoritative manner but ignores the facts. Many of those who listen to him have NO idea that he has the same disdain for them that he has for any others that he feels are “beneath” him.
Bingo! God, the number of times I’ve had a kid in my class who couldn’t get help after school because he or she had to get right to work. Then home, do homework while putting dinner on the table and watching the younger kids, because Dad’s on the evening shift, and Mom’s sleeping so she can get to her job at some weird hour…really poor kids, Mr. Gingrich.
Of course, I know the drill, they smile with dripping condescension, and tell me that they don’t mean the WORKING poor, they mean those really POOR poor, five-generations-on-welfare types. You know, the BAD poor people.
This has jack to do with teaching job skills–academic classes are for that. This has to do with fantasizing about punishing the poor further for their poverty. “Your family’s poor, kiddo, and the only reason for that is that your parents are lazy, shiftless, stupid people who can’t teach you anything important. We will now fix you, by letting you clean up after the kids with better parents.”
It’s like Eric Cartman was running for President. I swear to God.

Its even worse than that – Newt the Nazi wants to bring back slavery on the DL. By forcing poor (mostly Black and Latin) kids to choose between learning to read and tilling the fields, or his whole ‘red card’ plan that protects the farming lobby but does nothing to protect immigrant rights or helping these people become citizens of necessary – Newt and his corporate friends have a virtually endless supply of extremely cheap labor. If Gingrich becomes President, we’ll look less like Canada or Western Europe and more like India or China.
Newt Gingrich has been throwing verbal bombs and otherwise shooting from the lip without benifit of the thought process for decades. A Gingrich nomination would be the greatest gift the Democrats could ask for. RUN NEWT RUN!!!
I still say he isn’t serious about this. He just came along for the free publicity, but realized that this may be for “realz” when the pattern of “not Mitt Romney” began to develop.
He was only looking for another credential to add to his “resume” when he hocks his political wares to the gullible.

Ronnie Reagan is as liberal as they come and disagreed with his late father Red-Ink and his older brother Michael on almost everything political. I’ve seen these two go at it over politics.
