‘Tis the season to donate to charitable organizations that don’t promote bigotry against our LGBT friends.

Okay, I’m not gay so I may well be out of turn here– but the SA believes that glbt folk should remain celibate– but they also believe that no one should discriminate or persecute glbt folk for their orientation (or so I read in the page you posted up.) It also looks like it goes on to say that SA services will be available to anyone who needs them, irregardless.
It sounds to me like someone trying hard to toe the “Biblical” line against “homosexuality” (gawd, doncha love scare quotes?) while still maintaining their prime mission of helping those in need.
(And likely also keeping their donor-base from bolting, as well.)
There was a time when the Anglicans and the Methodists were the same way, but bit by bit the true Christian teachings continue to win out with them. (Fucking southern Baptists can and likely will go to hell, but that’s my own prejudice.)
They talk a good talk on their website, but their actions are very different. Search around and you’ll find a ton of stories of LGBT folks being kicked out of their shelters, denied employment, or persecuted because they dared to mention their sexual identity in front of Salvation Army people. This video is a good start from a purely political standpoint: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FXcSQ6OW6oA
I would chime in too — Salvation Army fed our family when I was 5 years old, and saved us from going cold by paying our gas bills. They do good work.
Also, 1 out of every homeless teen is LGBTQ and I don’t see the gay community rallying around those kids. The Salvation army does. Let’s don’t throw out the baby with the bath water here… we need to engage, not boycott.
Where do you get the impression that the gay community doesn’t rally behind homeless LGBTQ youth? That’s not true at all…
Anyways, there are many charitable organizations that do just as much good as the SA, without the side helping of bigotry. I will donate to them.
Wow, I had no idea.
Is there anything decent in this world anymore?
I mean what the hell?
You can’t eat chocolate anymore because it’s made by slaves, you can’t buy shoes anymore because they’re made in sweatshops in Asia, you can’t eat meat anymore because the cows have three brains, and now you can’t give to the Salvation Army!
