My ranty screed thing the other day about Jane Hamsher (“Why I will never post another word at My.Firedoglake.com”) brought out a series of quite interesting responses. The version at Daily Kos drew almost 1,000 comments and earned me five donuts in the Tip Jar. Apparently it’s okay to call the hundreds of thousands of Obama supporters who are the thin hopey line between the President RomneyPawlentyPaulPalinBachmannCainGingrichPerryMcCotterHuntsmanDuke and the White House the “stupidest motherfuckers in the world”. However, it is decidedly NOT okay to say, “Fuck you, Jane Hamsher”.
One commenter suggested that take my disgust with Hamsher to Redstate.com (I don’t get it either):
This is the most disgusting display of mindless hateful comments I have almost ever seen here. Unbelievable. I do seriously wonder as to the mental health of alot [sic] of the commenters in this diary.

But the best came in an email from one of Hamsher’s employees.

She is a friend of Marcos [sic] and Josh Marshall and the guys who run the American Prospect and pretty much anyone on the liberal side of the blogs and you’ve made a major career fuck up.
Did I mention that this came from a Hamsher employee? Great boss ya gotchyerself there, my friend.
So this is what we are dealing with when we have someone like Jane Hamsher as a self-declared spokesperson for “The LeftTM“. She has now become a vindictive, egotistical gate-keeper, at least in her own mind. Anyone who wishes to become a “professional left” blogger (i.e., get paid to write on one of the main liberal blogs) must be vetted and okayed by Jane Hamsher. So anyone wishing to advance must lick her boot and say only nice things about Queen Hamsher or risk being blacklisted by her, never to work in this town again.
How very liberal of her.
Well fuck that. If the cost of being a paid liberal blogger is kowtowing to someone who will try to destroy your career if you say something negative about her, I won’t pay that price. I probably make more money in my day job than Jane does keeping the internet safe from pragprog1 Obama supporters and I can blog circles around her doing it as a hobby. While she spends her time alienating the ground troops that will make the difference between President Obama and President RomneyPawlentyPaulPalinBachmannGingrichPerryMcCotterHuntsmanDuke, people like me are firing up the troops, reporting on what’s happening around the country to shine a light on our true enemies and generally being activists. Because that’s the difference between someone like me and someone like Jane Hamsher. I’m in it to help make the country a better place by promoting activism. She’s … not.
Will I ever get on teevee to represent “liberals” or “progressives”? Will I ever be a front-pager at Daily Kos or Think Progress? Probably not. But it won’t be because Jane Hamsher went around bad-mouthing me. It’ll be because I controlled my own destiny and took a different path. When all is said and done, one thing you’ll never have to say about me is that I threatened people on my own team simply because they said something mean back to me after I said something mean to them. I’m cool with that. Her kind of vindictive, childish, un-liberal behavior is pathetic and sad and it’s hurting our cause. I am also highly dubious that someone like Markos Moulitsas vets his employees by running them by Hamsher anyway. He’s got a whole stable full of good writers that give away their writing on a daily/weekly basis and help make him a shit ton of money. I am dubious that Hamsher’s opinion on the matter factors in at all.
How about you? Have you ever been threatened by Queen Hamsher or any of the other self-appointed “True Liberals” for speaking out against them? I’d love to hear about it in the comments.
UPDATE: I just want to add that the only reason that I shared part of the email from Hamsher’s employee is that I feel pretty certain that it was sent at her request, as a way to “send me a message”. I would be shocked, frankly, to find out that someone who would write to tell me that “Jane will never forget and she will bad mouth you to the major blog owners if your name comes up” would have the nerve to send me that email without her knowing. If you work for someone that horribly vindictive, you would be too afraid to send those words to a semi-prominent blogger. There was actually more than one email in the exchange and the tone changed from the previous one to that one. It came across very much as a threat, a warning not to cross Jane Hamsher and that, having already done so, I should be afraid.
Well, I’m not afraid. I have nothing to lose and something to gain by standing up to bullies who threaten other liberals and who are actually harmful to the cause of keeping the GOP out of the White House and out of Congress. What I have to gain is my self-respect.
My message to Jane: Message received, message ignored.

You must have hit a nerve for one of her employees to contact you the way he/she did. That wasn’t very professional either. Aren’t you glad you got out when you did? Goodness knows how much worse things could have gotten had you established a long relationship with that group.

I feel like I was totally duped into writing for My.FDL. Had I known it came with the condition that I never ever ever evereverevereverever say anything to disparage Hamsher or she would try to destroy my blogging career, I would never have written a single diary there.

EB, I don’t know how you got duped into writing for FDL either, but I don’t think you were duped, I think the idea to present a more sane face at FDL was a good idea, albeit one that had no chance in hell of ever working.
Anyone who has seen Jane in action over the last couple of years knows she’s vindictive and nasty. Remember when FDL wanted to primary Bernie Sanders because he was going to vote for the ACA without a public option? After she and her “minions” had been campaigning all over the blogoshpere for voting down the bill because it didn’t have a public option?
And look at how she was working it- how many people were getting paid by her, and never disclosed that until the big blow up? The facebook groups to tell people to go rec or hide rate diaries and comments, etc.
I lost a lot of respect for certain people after that fiasco, and for FDL in particular. Anything associated with the FDL brand is going to be poisoned by the toxic atmosphere over there.
Chalk it up to experience and move on, we have much more important things to discuss besides Jane fucking Hamsher.

EB, I agree w/ skohayes (hey there! Great seeing u outside of DK hell) These are knee-jerk, nut jobs who do not understand the political process. All they know about politics (since their ire was only raised when they opened their eyes during the Bush Cabal years) is the from seeing the way political gaming was played from 2000-2008 and they think that’s the norm. They are nothing but newbies with pitchforks and torches. They (both the Firebagger and the GOP) have no depth or breadth of understanding nor rational to comprehend that in a Democracy, we must take into account the views of all people elected to serve their constituents not just those on our side/ agree with us.
It is their allegiance to democracy we must question, along with their allegiance to the principles of the Democratic party and human decency as well. They love dictatorships and that’s what they’ve wanted to see out of Obama’s Presidency; not adherence to democracy or the process of democracy. One of the most admirable things about you is that you tell it like it is, tactfully but thoroughly and they can’t handle it. So you, ABL, Allan, Extreme Liberal, etc are going to be attacked by that swarm of locusts. They are stinging from the truth that their Hamwaldian propaganda machine has been ineffective and not swayed as evidenced by the number of donors and record amounts of cash raised by the Obama reelection campaign. They’re gonna attack everyone who doesn’t goose step exactly as they do.
Crazy people and dictators, when backed into a corner, will say and do often heinous outrageous actions which they erroneously believe will hurt their enemies. The Hamwaldians are historically known for cutting off their noses to spite their faces (see skohayes example of primarying Bernie Sanders which, in and of itself, proves they are not the slightest bit rational nor do they adhere to the principles of democracy or the Democratic Party). They are getting so marginalized they will very soon become the same political freaks the Teabaggers have proven themselves to be.

Hamsandwich seems to be suffering a HUGE breakdown, especially after she called us “dumb motherfuckers.” Are her coffers really THAT dry, that she is JEALOUS of how much money us Obamabots have been raising?
Honestly, she and the rest of the REAL dumb motherfuckers on the left can fuck off. I don’t understand why they are defending Hamsandwich, especially since she is working hand in hand with Grover Fucking Norquist… and they are calling President Obama and us the enemy, go figure.
And *eyeroll* at the reply from one of Hamsandwich’s minions, how very unprofessional. Lord knows how much angry mail that the Obama administration gets, but they are respectful in their responses, just as the President is with his responses to his most vocal critics, left and right. The tone of that reply from the Hamsandwich asshole reflects that of his/her boss, an asshole, and the Hamsandwich brigade wonders why they aren’t getting any respect. Respect is earned, not given, and they haven’t earned jack shit of respect.
Several years ago, a front pager at FDL wrote a longish piece about transgender issues. The writer said that transgender people were the bravest people in the world. I responded in the comments something about first responders, etc. and my comment got spiked. I tried to reword it so it was not confrontational. It got spiked. I emailed the moderator and asked what it was that caused my comment to get spiked. The moderator told me that I was a guest and that this was Jane and Christy’s home and I was not being respectful in their home.
I replied that ideas were only as strong as the tests to which we subject them. The moderator told me if I continued, I would be banned.
Done.
In my experience, people who say “You’ll never work in this town again” usually don’t actually have the power to stop anyone from working anywhere. It’s the mark of a bully — a particularly weak bully.

Scott, that is quite apt. She is a Hollywood failure with a notorious reputation for back stabbing and vindictiveness. When Tinsel Town dumped her talentless ass, she wrote a “tell all” about “Natural Born Killers” (because just watching that piece of shit on celluloid she produced wasn’t enough for her), and went on to a different grift.

You know what’s funny, I actually read that book “Killer Instinct” way back when that came out based on a recommendation of a friend. It was loaded with just caustic Hollywood snark about how cool she was and how lame Quentin Tarantino & Oliver Stone & everyone else in the Industry was. Just really pretentious, 90′s “I’m cooler than everyone else” bs. But it makes sense, she Failed Hard in Hollywood, so naturally she segues into the Hollywood for ugly people, politics, haha; but not having learned anything from her experiences beyond adolescent snark and caustic assholery, takes that pretention and snark and toxic envy and just projects it on to PBO or anyone else who defies her as Queen of the PL.
The irony is in the title, “Killer Instinct,” basically her and some other guy have a podunk little production company, who had optioned one of Quentin Tarantino’s older screenplays (NBK, which isn’t that bad of an original screenplay, I’ve read it, movie is very different). Then Tarantino gets really big after Resesvoir Dogs & True Romance (but before Pulp Fiction), so basically through luck and happenstance they have a hot item to option, so it ends up with Oliver Stone, who tries to make it into a larger statement about violence and celebrity etc., not to all tastes, but still. So she and her partner were in the right place at the right time, not much killer instict involved really, but rather than parley that into something bigger and better she squanders it all into a meanspirited, catty, tell-all about how cool she is and how lame everyone else (especially QT & OS) is.
No wonder no one in that town wanted to work with such a backstabbing shrew. Now we get to deal with her, yay!

I’ll just grab this opportunity to air my personal grievance with Lady Jane and take whatever flaming I got coming.
A couple of months ago I decided to try to engage with the guys at the FDL community. I was quite active and usually voiced opinions supportive of Obama and mainstream democrats. I didn’t shy away from pointing out inaccuracies by FDL frontpage bloggers when I spotted them. I did however keep it cordial and I did do my homework.
What eventually happened was that I got banned by Jane, personally. This was pretty much based on the FDL functionality where community members can flag posts they don’t like (for any reason).
In other words no-one had accused me of being inaccurate or inflammatory – the community just didn’t like to read what I wrote. Jane demanded that I come out in public with my private information (“identity hardening” she called it), so the community could “see who you are and that you’re not afraid to stand behind your opinions”. She also accused me of being a paid operative of the Department of Defense or the Democratic National Commitee, based on pretty much nothing whatsoever but my deviant oppinions and the frequency of my posting (during one week).

In order to comment in the future, you’re going to have to do some identity hardening. Including but not limited to linking to a genuine, active Facebook identity so everyone can see who you are and that you’re not afraid to stand behind your opinions. Most people who are here 24/7 expounding on one issue, and are being paid to do so, don’t want to do that. So we’ve found it to be a very effective way to separate paid trolls from people who are simply passionate in their opposition. We want to encourage honest disagreement without giving the space over to paid propagandists.
When you have done that, feel free to email info AT firedoglake DOT com, and we’ll link it to your profile. Then we will give you commenting permission again and see if it is enough to convince people that you’re not a paid DoD/DNC operative.

I realize I’m risking being in breach of Godwin’s Law but what it reminds me of most is what would pass for “management” in authoritarian states.

Actually, it’s the FDL crowd that regularly violates Godwin’s Law because they are projecting their own minds. Hamsher is the “Dear Leader” and they are the cult they cry about. FDL’s really not that different from the Glenn Beck groupies.
Godwin’s law only applies if the analogy is inappropriate which, in this case, it isn’t. After reading your comment I’m more than convinced she has some serious mental health issues, not the least of which is paranoia.

As you probably know, Blackwaterdog was drummed off of DK because of her positive postings on Obama. Don’t know if Hamsher crucified her but Glenn Greenwald did in a Twit message. She now has a successful blog of her own called The Only Adult in the Room.
Hamsher needs to be locked away in a padded cell and put on some non-recreational drugs. She is nothing short of a shemale version of Joe McCarthy.
That was actually when I gave up on Glenn and noticed he’d become a real mean-spirited jerk. It’s also what drove me to BWD’s blog. (I wrote about it here.)
He and Jane are both nasty vicious people, and Joan Walsh seems to be throwing in her hat with that lot as of late, too.

Joan started the process by going full PUMA in 2008, making the comments unmoderated thereby getting tons of page hits from Taylor Marsh, Rush Limbaugh’s “Operation Chaos” trolls, etc. She saw the page hits spike by opening the floodgates to trolls and crackpots, so decided to make Salon’s main source of revenue page hits from mostly concern troll pieces. After the PUMA thing failed horribly, GG went completely off the rails into hyperbolic absurdity; and his Cultists, when not on his crappy linkfarm articles deifying the guy, have basically driven out all non-Firebaggers/Greenbecks & anyone who does not hate Obama with the white-hot passion of elevendy kajillion suns.
So I have come here from the Greenbeck side of things, but get the whole Queen Jane thing from other corners of that part of the internets where rational adults still reside :-)

The threatening comment to you basically saying “You’ll never work in this town again” reminded me of something an attorney said to me when I first started in my current career. He did not like the outcome of an assessment I did on his client (my very first claim), and literally told me I would never work in my field again.
Well, it’s 21 years later, and I’m still here. And I would bet if you wanted to, you would still be writing the truth 21 years hence.

Hey Electablog! Pleaure to talk to you! Don’t know if you’ve seen any of my posts or comments but I have for now become something of a “resident Obababot” at FDL.
On my first post a few weeks ago I caused a bit of a ripple by arguing in my title and piece that FDL oughta be renamed the RushLimabughLake site.
Today there was yet another piece about “Obamabots” and someone else claiming that “true progressives” should vote for a “moderate republican.”
Electablog, people have accused me of being a DNC troll, my answer that it’s the RNC troll who must love it there.
Everything they do seem to help the GOP including Jane Hamsher’s strange alliances. I can’t help but wonder who she works for.
And the New Progressive Alliance(which people have told me I’m worng to think is funded by Jane but I don’t know where else they might have gaid their funds)have given us very little except the “Obama is a Republican” buses in black areas and a craig’ list ad.
I am curious: you said some on the business side asked you to come to FDL? Did you ever have any personal dealings with Jane?
In any case appreciate your work looking forward to reading more of it-emptywheel too.
