Pulling Away From The American People
This chart speaks volumes about what is happening in our country when it comes to politics. It explains what is happening with the debt ceiling debate as well as the last two and a half years of obstruction, vitriol and blatant appeals to the most conservative in the Republican Party. It may have worked out for them in 2010, without President Obama on the ticket, although you wouldn’t have known he wasn’t on the ticket if you pay attention to the media. But 2012 is going to be much different, mark my words. My fellow Michigander Nate Silver breaks it down for us, like only Nate can do. Click on the image to embiggen it!

When people let principles substitute for reality we get things like the current tantrum-fest on the left, where any gains that don’t amount to everything for everyone immediately if not sooner are dismissed as insufficient, Republican-lite, Obot-clapping-louder failures.
Ideology is a substitute for principles.
When people let ideology substitute for reality we get things like Cambodia under Pol Pot.
The Republicans are veering well into pure ideological territory, at least in terms of what they spoon-feed their increasingly shrill constituency – some of which got elected to legislatures and Congress, and are now fracturing their own caucus, causing Bo(eh)ner to have to spin his failures as a leader.
After 1994 came a gradual retrenchment. Let’s hope this one comes faster and goes farther next year.
And let’s work to make it so.
As I was reading your comment it occurred to me how many parallels there are to the libertarian wing of the left, I hate to say it but it could actually help President Obama by making moderates attracted to President Obama, since it really is that middle 20% of moderates who decide elections.
And contrary to all the spinning, the base of the Democratic Party is fully intact. Sure there are a lot of people running around trying to claim the base, but we know they are trying to use that mantle to make money. It’s very much like all the people who jumped in front of Robert Gibb’s “professional left” bullets, they all wanted to be the victims, there was money to be made off those suckers.
