I watched the vote on Rachal Maddow last night, and when the vote wnet through, I was so happy for the LGBT community of NY.
But then, Rachel Maddow completely pissed on that elation, by saying “President Obama is agasinst what just happened…”.
Now I know LBGT activists are not happy with Obama’s “evolving” status on gay marriage, but damn Rachel, can the supporters of the bill have at least the damn weekend to enjoy the warm and fuzzies that this moment brings.
I watched the show, and this President Obama statement by Maddow seriuosly came out of no where. I’m sorry, it pissed me off.
STILL, this doesn’t take away from my joy for the LGBT community, but I’m def gonna be avoiding Rachel’s show for a minute. I’m sorry, but I expect better of Rachel.
If you polled the members of the NY Assembly and Senate who voted Yes for same-sex marriage, I am confident you will find a percentage of them who personally believe that marriage is between a man and a woman, yet who voted for the bill because they believed it was the right thing for their constituents.
And Dick Cheney supports gay marriage but did absolutely nothing for the cause. Obama may personally feel that marriage is between a man and a woman but he’ll certainly not stand in the way of SSM. And hopefully, we’ll get a Congress that will overturn DOMA a move the President supports.
Not to belabor the point, but isn’t it interesting, that it’s ok for the NY GOP Senators stance on SSM to have “evolved” enough for them to vote for support of the SSM bill, but Obama’s “evolution” obviously means he “against what just happened here” as Rachel Maddow said last night.
Marriage — and the rules thereof — have always been a matter legislated by the individual states. The feds have gotten involved when there has been a matter of unconstitutionality. The case of Loving v. Virginia (1967) went to the Supremes where Virginia’s law against interracial marriage was overturned unanimously.
How do you think the current Supreme Court would be likely rule on same-sex marriage??
I’m really tired of the “blame Obama” thing. He’s a constitutional scholar. He always takes the long view. I would be thrilled if he came out in favour of same-sex marriage but it would be grandstanding (not the nature of No-Drama-Obama)to no particular purpose because (a) legislation could not be passed in the current Congress and (2) the Supreme Court would never find such legislation constitutional.
Welcome to the FAIR CLUB, NY. It’s totally cool here.
I don’t give a hot damn what Rachel says. Got bored with her after the TALKMEDOWN schtick. Got bored with Stewart after the years of camera mugging and Obama bashing. Colbert’s my guy. Cute too.
I have many gay relatives in NY. Should there be nuptuals, you’re all invited!
I think there’s a level of impatience out there when it comes to SSM. We live in a culture that’s all about instant gratification. What we want, we want it NOW dammit!
While I would love it if every state legalizes same sex marriage tomorrow, I know that’s not gonna happen. When it comes to the battle of equal rights, every group fighting for it had to struggle because people with privilege fought them every step of the way. But the good news is that we supporters of SSM are starting to make progress. So there’s that. We just gotta keep on fighting.
congrats to NY LGBT community.

My opinion only…

Can I just say how much I love that the Empire State Building has the gay? Very much, that’s how much. Very very much.
Yay, NY!
