I would like to shove my foot directly up this asshole’s giant loophole.
The Teabilly assholes in Indiana are trying to pass HB 1210. It’s an abortion bill because of course it is. And concerned Rep. Turner is concerned — that women are going to lie about rape and incest to get… oh, go read the title of this post. I don’t even want to type it again:
TURNER: With all do respect to Rep. Riecken, I understand what she’s trying to do. But as you know that when the federal health care bill was going through Congress there was a lot of discussion whether this would allow for abortion coverage and of course we were all told it would not. And the bill, my house bill 1210, would prevent that for any insurance company to provide abortion coverage under federal health care bill. This [amendment] would open that window and I would ask you to oppose this amendment.
I just want you to think about this, in my view, giant loophole that could be created where someone who could — now i want to be careful, I don’t want to disparage in any way someone who has gone through the experience of a rape or incest — but someone who is desirous of an abortion could simply say that they’ve been raped or there’s incest.
Tomorrow? Before I birth my half dozen spite babies? I’m going to abort one and then say it raped me.
Yeah, that’s right. I was raped from the inside by a fetus.
What?!
It’s no more ridiculous than the rest of the shit the Republicans are throwing in our faces.
So, that’s — divide by two, carry the one — 5 Angry Black Babies coming right up.
(H/T sukabi!)

The fire poster and “spite babies” line gave me my first laugh of the day. And boy did I need it after reading about that Eric Turner asshole, who should be dragged through a pit filled with broken glass, dipped into a vat of sulfuric acid, rolled in a fire ant farm, stuffed into a cannon and shot into a toxic waste dump.
Not going to make him snort a few lines of plutonium first?
hilarious. Betty, you rock my socks.
I absolutely see your point, and thank you, by the way, for giving me yet one more reason for my head to explode — before noon, even — over the GOP’s utter inability to treat women as humans deserving of respect and compassion, rather than baby-making machines. Also: “Desirous of an abortion.” Dude. WTF. Who talks like that?
But I will also say this:
When you treat women as children who should not and cannot have control of their bodies, they will find a way to get what they need, even if it is dishonest. Hence, back alley abortions, for instance.
I had my abortion when I lived in Israel, a country which makes you go before a committee to get your abortion approved. As luck would have it, I was unmarried when I fell pregnant, so according to Israeli law, that’s good enough reason to have an abortion. So there I sat, in front of three people who didn’t know me, told them I was a trollop, and they gave me their stamp of approval.
But what do Israeli women who are married do when they want to abort the pregnancy they achieved with their husband?
They lie.
They say they had an affair. Because that, too, is reason enough according to Israeli law.
So, if you really need an abortion, and someone makes you do a dog and pony show to get the thing you need, you will present faux-dog and fake-pony.
Just like DADT, these laws don’t do much to reduce the thing that the GOP is shaming people over — but they do increase lying.
And in this case, it turns the survivors of incest and rape into suspects. AWESOME.
“Israel, a country which makes you go before a committee to get your abortion approved.”
Holy crap, I had no idea Israel had such draconian abortion policies! What the hell is the rationale behind the committee requirement? Is it designed to promote population growth or something? Good god, I’m sorry you had to go through that. I can’t imagine…
Well, it’s a religious thing. A sop to the ultra-Orthodox, and treated as such. The committee acted as if they were embarrassed to be there, and the lying is both rampant, and an open secret.
In many ways, Israel is far, far ahead of much of the west on social things: Husband rape was legally defined as rape loooong before it was in the US, and gay partners have long had rights very like that of married couples.
But yeah. There are other things that kind of suck!
And having said that: The abortion was covered by my insurance, which in Israel, is socialized. So, yeah….
I am not going to tell you my life story BUT I am an OLD-STRONG woman; about less than a year ago, I was called to Jury Duty. The case was about a woman that had been raped (lucky me got picked and the woman was about five years younger than me).
We set there looking at the criminal while the evidence was poured in; DNA, finger prints and a shit load more identifying the criminal as the guilty-criminal that he was. We would take small brakes (thrown out because of this or that; three women talked shit about the women that were shown on the “Maury-something-Show” whose kids had been proven not to be fathered by the man/multiple-men they claimed BCAUSE “of the DNA tests”…) .
Who were the ones claiming that the guy was being framed for the crime and did not believe in DNA when the time came into sending this asshole to jail? Those three women! AND because of those three women we had to come up with a compromise and lower the criminal “choices” to a lesser charge so that they would vote for it. The criminal had been in jail before for the same reason; we learned that after the trial, he was a registered sex offender but that info was given to us (the jury) after the fact.
I only wanted to say that that guy in the video is an asshole!
