South Dakota Wants to Make it Totally Cool to Murder Abortion Providers

What the–?!

I have no words:

A law under consideration in South Dakota would expand the definition of “justifiable homicide” to include killings that are intended to prevent harm to a fetus—a move that could make it legal to kill doctors who perform abortions. The Republican-backed legislation, House Bill 1171, has passed out of committee on a nine-to-three party-line vote, and is expected to face a floor vote in the state’s GOP-dominated House of Representatives soon.

“The bill in South Dakota is an invitation to murder abortion providers.”

The bill, sponsored by state Rep. Phil Jensen, a committed foe of abortion rights, alters the state’s legal definition of justifiable homicide by adding language stating that a homicide is permissible if committed by a person “while resisting an attempt to harm” that person’s unborn child or the unborn child of that person’s spouse, partner, parent, or child. If the bill passes, it could in theory allow a woman’s father, mother, son, daughter, or husband to kill anyone who tried to provide that woman an abortion—even if she wanted one.

“The bill in South Dakota is an invitation to murder abortion providers,” says Vicki Saporta, the president of the National Abortion Federation, the professional association of abortion providers. Since 1993, eight doctors have been assassinated at the hands of anti-abortion extremists, and another 17 have been the victims of murder attempts. Some of the perpetrators of those crimes have tried to use the justifiable homicide defense at their trials. “This is not an abstract bill,” Saporta says. The measure could have major implications if a “misguided extremist invokes this ‘self-defense’ statute to justify the murder of a doctor, nurse or volunteer,” the South Dakota Campaign for Healthy Families warned in a message to supporters last week.

I propose that everyone who is not fucking bananas move to the West Coast.  For those of you cold-weather lovers, I hear Seattle is ass-cold this time of year.  Let’s just split the country and let the jackwagons inbreed until they all look like Cleti the Slack-jawed Yokel, pictured above.

Incidentally, when I first saw this map a couple weeks ago, I thought it was amusing:

It’s not so amusing anymore.

  1. Yet, we have “progressives” out there claiming – AGAIN- that they’ll sit out the next election… apparently in anticipation of becoming the Uited States of WTF?!?

There’s no place left to run to.

    • that’s why i’m hammering women’s issues from here on out. if these clowns can look at the women in their life and say “you’ll survive president romney” then — well i don’t know what. then — something.

  2. I’m waiting for our friends and fervent defenders of Holy Mother Church Inc. — the ones who have no problems with hospitals refusing abortions to save the lives of women and who will excommunicate nuns for trying to help women in that situation by mentioning abortion (http://jezebel.com/5540802/nun-excommunicated-for-suggesting-abortion) — to tell us that they are going to work hard to defeat this bill because all murder is illegal.

Though when you consistently push the “abortion is murder!” rhetoric, it’s a little hard to walk it back and say “Oh, but you still shouldn’t kill those horrible American Holocaust/genocide baby-killing doctors.”

I know, I know — I might have hurt the Fee-Fees of the Fetus-Fetishist Faithful here. Which is SO much worse than letting women die rather than provide safe and legal abortions. Because life in the womb is holy — but actual living women ain’t shit. And of course, someone’s need to feel they are doing the will of their deity by working against abortion (and once again — not ALL faiths are against it) must ALWAYS be honored and respected above the need to take care of actual living women.

But I’m sure they’ll PRAY for those poor women. Because that’s SO much more useful than healthcare services.

  3. Also, Wisconsin excels at binge drinking! (Maybe I’m misreading the intent of “worst” here, though.)
